A few ebbs and flows but Delpo the stronger in the breaker, long way to go though!
Good man Delpo! 1hour10mins of play and it's only the end of the first set. Come on big man! Keep it going.
Second set to Delpo
Rafa retires injured

Pity it ended like that but Rafa obviously struggling physically and at two sets down did not have much choice, Still Del Potro impressing and done well to stay focused in 2nd.
Delighted Delpo thru to the final, but I am sure he and everyone else would have preferred if the match was not won that way. The first set was amazing and it looked then as if we were in for another cracker of a match. I had wondered if Rafa's previous matches would take their toll and I do feel for him. Really looking forward to the final now and to cheering Delpo home!

Pleased DelPo won but what a sad way for it to end.
Just saw glimpses of the match , whats wrong with Rafa , knees again ?
But yayyyy for Delpo , now if only Kei could beat Djokovic ( unlikely I know )
Kei and Novak warming up. Hope I can stay awake for this :sleepy:

Why such a big gap before this match. Hating the scheduling of US Open - no singles play in day time 2 previous days.

I can't (stay awake) so I'm off. Djok already up a break anyway so night night!

Delpo/Rafa match was over very quickly and Kei and Novak would not be ready to play.

I don't see why not - they don't know who long the match will last.
Been ridiculous anyway. Serena's night matches starting at 7.20pm - why can't they come out at 6.50 warm up and start on time.

Anyway Nole seems pretty much in control right now and looked a bit worrying when Kei pulled up awkwardly earlier, however seems ok ,even if up against it. Not everyone will agree but I think it's quite good having doubles matches opening play at times. Comfortable win for Djokovic as he goes through to final 6-3,6-4,6-2. Pretty much dictating throughout and unfortunately Kei couldn't put him under much pressure.

Sad for Rafa but not surprised. Keeping everything crossed for Potty - really would like him to be hoisting the trophy come Sunday!
So sad for Rafa :crying: I think he should take the rest of the year off to recuperate. Of course he will have to miss DC next week
Hope Delpo wins the title now. It would be amazing, nine years after his previous title!

Shame Rafael couldn't finish the match but glad Delpo Is through. Didn't bother with the second match -sounds like I didn't miss much. Would love Delpo to win
oop for Saturday - https://www.usopen.org/en_US/scores/schedule/index.html
Sad for Rafa that he was forced to retire but no surprise after the tough marathon matches he played in the extreme heat. His match against Dominic Thiem is the match of the tournament for me.
Hope he is OK.
:swingin: :swingin: :swingin: :pirate:
Hope Delpo wins the title now. I can just imagine the noise from the South Americans in that stadium and the wild celebrations that will go on in New York if he succeeds. Delpo will no doubt join them.  :shelebrate:
Best of luck to Delpo - he deserves this title. :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

:barmy::pillows::smashed::popcorn:Will be cheering for Delpo with or without a meltdown or tears from his opponent. It might look like a vicar's tea party after the women's final though.
Go Delpo - no-one deserves it more!
Hope I can stay awake for this. Fell asleep at the start of the women's final and wakened up at the presentation!! {From all accounts I didn't miss much, and got the result I wanted without having to witness such bad behaviour.)
Best of luck to Delpo
Hope the men's final will be a great one marked by brilliant tennis and sportsmanship.
Hope Delpo wins but don't mind too much if Novak wins it.

Well apart from Andy ;), but I know what you mean and couldn't agree more. Putting Andy aside, never have I wanted another player to win more
Well, of course, discounting Andy - maybe next year!! ;)

Liking the female Brit umpire keeping the NY crowd in order from the start. Not allowing for any of the crowd nonsense we had last night.

Novak so often seems to wear colours similar to the court surroundings. It makes him camouflaged and out of the corner of the opponent's eye presumably means he is more difficult to spot in a split second. Good strategy.

Wonder if Djokovic will get grumpy because the crowd seem overwhelmingly behind Delpo?

Somehow I don't think there's going to be any rackets smashed, coaching or abusing the officials. ;)

Well this umpire sounds like she won't take any messing. If she's willing to take on the Argentinian fans shouting out and singing choruses of "ole, ole, ole, ole Delpo" at crucial moments, she certainly won't stand for any racket smashing etc

I've never really consciously registered that but I think you're right.
Rats - first blood to Djokovic! :grrr:
Djok getting EVERYTHING back! Relentless.

From middle of first set Djokovic in command, defence is incredible! Up a set and break, up maintains this level pretty tough for Del Potro.
Nole a little annoyed with the crowd, Delpo breaks back.....
Alison Hughes has her work cut out with the crowd.
A couple of loose games from Nole. Getting interesting....
Delpo getting into Djok's face now! And the crowd getting into his head. Come on Delpo!

Certainly more interesting phase , a few errors from Djokovic but some inspirational play from Delpo. Djokovic though saves bps for 4 all in marathon game.

Hope Delpo can take this set but if he doesn't unfortunately can't see him winning and I have work tomorrow so must go to bed.
A great set of tennis. Such a pity Delpo couldn't take it. Sad.
JAMES4578
09-09-2018, 22:44
Delpo definitely had shot in this set but errors at crucial times and Djokovic capitalises to go 2 sets up, takes breaker 7-4. Still tight set and Juan very much played his part but will take a lot to turn it around.

I am now on bet365 and hoping Delpo can turn this around. Just can't get past Nole!

yay, Delpo breaks back.
Djoko has been sailing close to the wind with the shot clock so the code violation was well due. Can't moan it was on BP, that's exactly when he's prone to ball bounce for too long

Djokovic takes it and playing some amazing tennis -have to say was worthy winner. Del Potro competed well but ultimately could not execute on the key points. Still can take credit from display throughout tournament.Lengthy 2nd set turned out to be key , had that gone other way could have been different match-still seen quite a few exciting points.
disappointed that Delpo couldn't make more of a match of it , but well done to Nole , he really is the best right now !!
OSopen over for another year :(

Very entertaining final, well done to both :clap::clap: So great to see the loveable Delpo fit and healthy, and he should be so proud of reaching the final, but let's face it - doesn't matter how good you look in earlier rounds once you come up against a fit member of the big 4 it's a whole different level.
Congratulations to Novak - amazing achievement. :bravo:
Huge commiserations to Delpo -

Second set was good but the rest rather dull and boring. Well, at least with Djokovic back to the top it means Federer probably won't win any more GSs and he might even get past him!

watched the replay which Amazon mucked up - it resulted in me turning on to see a picture of Novak holding the cup and DelPo standing in the background looking shattered. What's new! He's back. We'd better get used to it!

Sad for Juan-Martin but Djokovic was amazing.
What a contrast the men's final was. Great tennis was played by both Novak and Delpo. Particularly impressive was the warm hug given by Novak to Delpo at the net on the conclusion of the match, and then Novak, after he had celebrated his victory with his supporters, noticed Delpo sitting on his chair crying his eyes out and went over to him to give him a warm hug and no doubt saying a few words of reassurance.
Well done to both players. :bravo:
