2011 Paris Masters 'Battle of the Boards' pick 'em contest

Entries for the Paris Masters pick 'em are now open at http://bit.ly/bGTaxm - qualifiers are unlikely to be available before Sunday evening but there are only 6 qualifier slots and none of them have been drawn against each other, so picking before qualifiers are placed is likely to be less risky than usual this time.

Entries close at 10.00 GMT (= 11 CET = 5 am US Eastern) on Monday.

Realistically, I don't have time to run this contest next week (my fault for always trying to do too many things in too little time!) and work may get even more hectic over the weekend, but I know many of you have been missing the Masters BOTBs so I really didn't want to cancel again.

However, there is a chance that getting the initial results up after entries close may get delayed a lot longer than usual (i.e. days rather than hours) - I very much hope that won't be the case, but I would rather warn people now than have people enter under false pretences and then disappoint them. Even in the worst case scenario, results will appear eventually, even if it is just final results in a few weeks' time!

Unfortunately it would take even longer to show someone how to get from entries to results for the first time than it takes to actually do it, so taking on a one-off helper for that part of the job isn't a viable short-term (i.e. for Paris) solution.

Apologies for the fact that the post-US Open rankings still aren't up - again, they will appear sometime.

Finally, I may not get a chance to do the reminder emails this time, so if you have friends who play but don't check the forum frequently, please let them know!

Good luck picking. Bercy is famously flaky, so expect lots of muppeting and you won't be disappointed! ;)

Qualifiers have now been placed on the entry form.

Paris have said they won't confirm the exact effects of the del Potro withdrawal until 10.30 CET on Monday and the ATP bracket challenge form hasn't even got qualifiers placed (so they must be even more confused than us!) but as far as I can tell, lines 25-28 in the draw will either be:

(17) Wawrinka v BYE
Lucky loser v Isner

OR

Lucky loser with a BYE
Wawrinka v Isner

... depending on whether del Potro withdrew before or after Monday's OoP was published. I get the impression it was after, so I put the latter option on the form.

The lucky loser should be Kunitsyn but the fact that Paris have said they won't confirm until lucky loser sign-in closes tomorrow morning makes me wonder if they have reason to believe he won't sign in, e.g. if he picked up an injury while losing his FQR match.

So the tightest match of the day is Young v Monaco which is the only round 1 match where I am not backing the favourite. That sounds very worrying that I have 5 favourites left out of the 6 round 1 matches given what has happened so far!!

Then in round 2 my matches of the day are with Verdasco, a 2% pick so surely that ones in the bag, and Anderson to overcome their seeded opposition and hopefully Benneteau can do the same for damage limitation purposes

Just noticed the team position is looking good with AM just pipping JM for 1st place. It's good to see AM is still the largest group in a fairly small pickem field!

Congratulations also to Ace! and Mintsauce both in joint first place on 7.

Everything conspired together to produce an unusually low number of entrants this time (e.g. Paris always has a relatively low number of entrants, there was no time to go round the forums or send a mass email, no Shanghai BOTB so 'casual' BOTBers probably wouldn't have thought to come looking and then all the confusion about Potty, whether Nole is playing or not, etc), but at this point in time, I have to admit I was quite relieved. :)

The time taken certainly isn't directly proportional to the number of entrants or anything like that, but getting only the die-hard BOTBers taking part meant only one entrant error that took more than a few seconds to sort out :) and being able to fit everyone's pick lists on one page cut down the time required to do the results as well, making it possible to get the first results up well before play ended, which I originally thought there was no hope of doing. :)

It also means I can fit all of the day 1 results into one post for the first time for years :) .. pity about how bad they are though! :shamed: ;)

It seems odd that I don't seem to have a world ranking in the results table. Hope its not a big thing to correct.

It was a minor technical problem - the number of players with ranking data (all players who have ever taken part, even if unranked now) has exceeded the "not in our wildest dreams" number I originally set up the Masters BOTB spreadsheet a few years ago so the lookup which inserts the numbers into the WR column on the results table failed to pick up the Zs and most of the Ys. "Year of Rafa" tweeted the same question! Now corrected.

TEAMS: @jamie_murray fans win R1 & lead overall from @TATtweets & BT (both up 3) - last night's leaders AM fans plummet 5 to 6th.

INDIV: @Genbrit AM & @andrijagajic DC lead with 18/24. R1 winner (11/16) Johnnylad BT & 4= @fah51 CC, mintsauce AM & @LuluArroyo 1 pt behind

INDIV ctd: I thought my 5/16 in R1 was unbelievably bad (indeed, it is) but poor @iaingoodbrand suffered from the most R1 pain with 3/16!

The top scorer and fastest riser on day 2 was Fentiger IN, up 86 to 11= after scoring 13/14 on Tuesday.

The lowest scorers on day 2 with just 4/14 were Yorkie AM, down 110 (biggest faller) to 129=, & Jeff Tagen IN, down 36 to last, 2 pts adrift.

Other unfortunates with 3 figure falls (having started the day up in the top 10) were Imoen BT & @jacobite67 AM, both down 104 to 112=.

It was a minor technical problem - the number of players with ranking data (all players who have ever taken part, even if unranked now) has exceeded the "not in our wildest dreams" number I originally set up the Masters BOTB spreadsheet a few years ago so the lookup which inserts the numbers into the WR column on the results table failed to pick up the Zs and most of the Ys. "Year of Rafa" tweeted the same question! Now corrected.

Thanks Steven but on a day when I fell almost the same amount as my world ranking of 123 when there are only 133 entrants its not much comfort to see it again. After today I think its time to wave this:surrender:

Day 1, the GEMs were the only ones behaving. Today Monfils 92% (L to F-Loppy 8%) & Gillou 86% (L to Mónaco 5%) more than made up for it! :-(

TEAMS: BT (up 2 to 1st & R2 winners) have taken the lead away from R1 winners @jamie_murray fans (down 2 to 3rd) with @TATtweets still 2nd.

INDIV: Genbrit AM & motobass TA lead on t/b from (in 3=) Reeltime BT, Jmc116 IN, Fentiger IN, Ace! AM & jan bangkok IN. All 7 have got 34/48.

The 5 in 3= equal top scored in R2 with 13/16 together with @edblunt BT & Bruce GR, both up 20 to 11=, matthew GR & cfn33 BT, up 32 to 21=.

Risers of the day were mattk77 SG, up 45 to 26=, Trmooney8 DC, up 61 to 51=, and Hawkeye AM, up 57 to 66=.

Faller of the day was mikeindo TN, down 43 to 132nd, but Canadian WXMan IN 1 point further back is the only entrant still below the gorillas.

The R3 winners with 7/8 correct were nelslus TA, up 34 to 7th, and riser of the day Londoner Bkk IN, up 64 to 46th.

TEAMS: BT still lead, by 0.45 from @TATtweets. @jamie_murray fans win the QFs & move up 1 to 3rd overall. ATP DCC still rooted to the bottom.

INDIV: @Jmc116 IN leads @fah51 CC & @edblunt BT (both up 2) by 1 pt, with Ed the only entrant in the top 10 with both finalists still alive.

Apart from @edblunt (Fed), the highest-placed entrants with winner still in are @henkowska MT (Tsonga) & patrick TA (Fed) in 14=.

The only entrants who got 3/4 semi-finalists correct were KAT AM, up 56 to 29th, and Canadian WxMan IN, up 15 to 114th.

Everybody got at least one SF-ist correct. Jean-Marc BT, jervisjames MT & @billytall TA, all down 38 to 95=, edged the dodgy dropper contest.

TEAMS: @cctennisworld win the SF round by a big margin and rise 3 places on the day to take a 1.27 point lead. BT 2nd, @TATtweets 3rd.

INDIV: World no 2 @edblunt BT, up 2 today, takes a 3 pt lead from patrick (TA) & @jmc116 IN. Also top 5: rf8r9 RF & bfp SG, both up 14 to 4=. 6th is @fah51 CC, then @LuluArroyo IN, up 17 to 7, Charlie02123 TA, up 19 to 8, KAT DC, up 20 to 9. 10= bangkok IN/VamosVixs AM.

4 of the top 5 have Fed to win but if Tsonga wins, nonobobo RG (now 13=) will win, @Henkowska MT will finish 3rd & @Pebs72 MP 4th.

26 entrants got both finalists correct, with Hawkeye AM., up 61 to 38, @JBs10is NB, up 60 to 48, & Anna BT, up 58 to 34, the biggest risers.

N.B. Most changes in ranking points (the RH column) are negative because you now count your 6 best (was 7) due to less Masters BOTBs this yr.

In the post-USO team rankings, the top 2 were still BT & GBTG, now separated by just 7 points! @TATtweets rose 2 to WR 3 after the USO.

FINAL PARIS BOTB MINI-REPORT:

Only 29% of BOTB entrants picked Fed to win his first Paris Masters title, but win it he did.

TEAMS: @cctennisworld won their 2nd round in a row to take the title by a big margin, 3.55, from BT in 2nd & @TATtweets in 3rd. Dead last early on, ATP DCC climbed another 2 places today to finish in the top half. AM fans were left as the lanternes rouges.

INDIV: Congratulations to @edblunt BT, winning by 3 points to take his 2nd BOTB title of the year, with Patrick TA the runner-up. bfp SG & rf8r9 RF finished a further point back, bfp edging 3rd for hall of fame purposes having entered just over 1 hour earlier.

Completing the top 10: 5 @LuluArroyo IN, 6 Charlie02123 TA, 7 KAT DC, 8= VamosVixs AM & bangkok IN, 10 vivahate CC - all up 2 today.

Risers of the day were mojoworking CC & Scotty TA, both up 42 to 53=. Faller of the day @Pebs72 MP, down 19 to 45th.

For the second year running, @edblunt BT (won Wimby & Paris, top 20 @ USO) has finished as BOTB world no. 1 by more than 200 points! His feat is astonishing given how unpredictable BOTB can be & that no single good score can count towards both year ends.
