Maybe if Andy does well after oz we would get lucky and have him playing a semi final somewhere in the world and we could all watch together over a sherry or two ;)

I think the American hard courts in March are more likely. If he is looking to cut back his season then Rotterdam/Dubai are like tournies to be missed off.

I've only just found this thread ... yes, definitely up for a get together! But you knew that ....

Liverpool would be great and it doesn't have to be early Feb now either. Could go for March which at least stands a chance of the weather being a teeny bit better ... maybe

I don’t think k the weather really gets better here. I’ve waited for 12 years lol :) :)

Next September I have promised Kev a trip for his birthday that is all about him. As the Davis Cup won’t be using the weekend around his birthday lol. So early September is Better If we are looking at then x

I've also just found this. I, vaguely, remember the last time (and only time) that I went to Liverpool was when we played Poland in the DC tie. We had Andy Murray and Dan Evans back then. Poland beat us. I wouldn't mind going back to Liverpool in March.

What’s a good month for you angie? Early September is better than late but discounting September all together would be better so I can be flexible booking kevs birthday trip lol. If he ever gives a hint of where he wants to go

Good point Ange. Yep, early Sept not good for me either, we are usually on hols then. What about March?? Summer some of us tend to see each other at tournaments anyway so early in the year is better. I agree, we won't be able to please everyone but hopefully can get as many who are interested as possible.

March suits me if suits others. Doubt those heading to bath will want 2 getaways so close together. Looks like we need to have 2 separate meet ups unfortunately

March or certainly the pre-summer time might be a better time for weekend hotel prices in Liverpool. The city has a thriving weekend hen-party business which I think can make hotels expensive in the peak summer wedding season. I work in Liverpool and literally every Friday between May & September on my way home from work I see hen parties tumbling out of Lime Street station. I've seen some sights I can tell you :shelebrate: and that was at the beginning of their weekend :big grin:

Also worth a look at the football fixtures timetable - if Liverpool or Everton are playing at home that can put up hotel prices too

Would love a get-together. I vote for March also. September is September is such a long time off. A weekend in Liverpool to welcome the Spring. I'm ok with February as well.

Why not have the one meetup at the Fed Cup? Some might want to see the tennis too, and others might just want to come for the meet up. But it avoids having two separate meetups.

JerryD
04-10-2018, 13:37
Just thinking on February is also my nieces 18th birthday, it’s on the 4th so the party will be on the 9th. So if there was just one meet up at the fed cup I wouldn’t be able to make it.

For March the I was expecting the 16th to be a better date as both teams are away but oddly the 1st weekend in March is cheaper on booking.com anyway.

The thing is discussions about a meet-up had happened before we knew the venue of the Fed Cup Liverpool seemed to be the favoured city. So perhaps those interested in the tennis can do both if one in February and the other in March or just choose which weekend suits you best.

Jerry any suggestions on decent cheapish hotels?

patlowe
05-10-2018, 13:30
Any date for me too, but as Kath suggested, might be worth checking out the footie fixtures first! Choose a weekend Liverpool are away!

Had a quick look at fixtures. At the moment Liverpool are away on Sat 2nd and 16th. They are home Sat 9th and 30th. There is nothing in the fixture list for 23rd. Is Easter early or late next year?

Everton's away dates are 9th and 30th. Home dates are 2nd and 16th.

So no footie fixtures on Sat 23rd.

Easter late....Sunday 21 April 2019. So that won't affect a March date.

Another wee thought...clocks will go forward Sun 31st March, so on the 30th we lose an hour!

JerryD
05-10-2018, 14:44
Liverpool are technically away on the 2nd but away at Everton lol. Funnily enough though derby day means less people from other places as a lot of the fans from both teams are local So more hotel rooms available and cheaper prices.

Money wise the 2nd and the 23rd are about the same. But town (city centre) can a bit crazy on derby day.

supergran
05-10-2018, 14:57
Just checked the three Premier Inns in city on 8th March. The range is £84, 86, 99 for one night and £246, 252, 275 for Friday and Saturday.

JerryD
05-10-2018, 15:08
There is a new one opening in lime street which is £76 for March 2nd and £85.50 for the 23rd it is a good location for the city and for anyone coming by train. The docks area tends to be more expensive https://www.premierinn.com/gb/en/hotels/england/merseyside/liverpool/liverpool-city-centre-lime-street.html there is a bad review from someone unhappy that the hotel isn’t open in time for this weekend but it is opening this October.

JerryD
05-10-2018, 15:15
Though having said that on the weekend of the 23rd the one in the Albert dock is £86.50 so only £1 more than the lime street one. On other weekends the difference is more substantial. So any preferences for the 2nd or the 23rd? I would suggest the 23rd as though it’s a little more expensive it’s gets you out of town on derby day. But if you’re not bothered by the football crowd then the hotel is cheaper that weekend.

lovetennis
05-10-2018, 16:06
I can do 2nd or 23rd March weekends. I probably won't need a hotel as only a 35 minute train journey away. On the other hand if it's cheap enough I may stay over to see more of you all

2 of my friends have birthdays in march and I'm going to theatre on 23rd. If it's 23rd I'm a definite no, if it's another date I'll try sweet talk them into celebrating on a date that suits me lol. Wd like to see Liverpoool! So don't pick a date round me, I'll just try fit in.

Is Albert dock a good area to be or better in city centre?

Literally only a few minutes walk from Albert Dock area to the main shopping and restaurant areas. Liverpool is a very compact city - you're never far from any of the main sights

JerryD
05-10-2018, 20:10
With the changes around Liverpool one Albert dock is now just across the street from the main Liverpool one area where lots of the restaurants are. Just a 5 minute walk. Lime street is 18 minutes walk from there so really not far at all. A lot of stuff sits in the middle so distance wise it’s not a big deal. However, personally I’d say the docks is a nicer place to stay. It is prettier and better lit between the centre and there than the centre and lime street. Also for those driving it is easier access to park up etc than lime street as there are one way systems round there that can be a pain.

JerryD
05-10-2018, 20:15
The old city centre used to be seen as as round St. John’s. These days Liverpool one and lord street which meets it are the centre. Even the main bus stop is down there. A lot of the centre is pedestrianised. Liverpool is very small in terms of the areas people go.

angiebabez
05-10-2018, 20:23

Strongly agree with Jerry's assessment here. Definitely a nicer ambience in the Albert Dock/Waterfront area than around Lime St. Also although the new PI at Lime St is due to be open by March, there is an awful lot of other building work going on around there. Massive block of student residences under construction and I doubt they will be ready by March, so all in all I think the Albert Dock one is a better bet. Lots to see and do around there with The Beatles Story museum, Tate Gallery, and historic Waterfront buildings. A couple of minutes walk and you're in Liverpool One shopping area, Mathew St and the Cavern Club, St Georges Hall etc.

JerryD

I understood the lime street one was due to open the end of this month. Either way the docks is better

The train goes direct from Crewe to lime street. I think it’s about 30 minutes. It’s onky 40 or so to drove. Kev used to commute to Bentley which is there everyday.

It’s a pain to get back to St. Helens late at night though. My friend tess had a right pain after we went out for her birthday. She missed her train and then paid a small fortune for a black cab home! Having said that we live in Liverpool at its at least £20 for a taxi back at night these days. When I was young, free and single and worked at the University used to spend my social life in Liverpool. I used to get the 12.45 am train from Lime Street on Saturdays. It was the Scottish Mail train and first stop was St Helens. I dashed for that on many occasions in 3inch heels. Then often shared a taxi with strangers to Thatto Heath. Heady, carefree and probably careless days. The last bus was midnight which got me nearer home and I would walk home alone that is until a middle aged man accosted me and pushed me against a wall. I kneed him in the groin and punched him in the face and he ran off. My brother used to meet me after that.

I think that's the same PI we stayed in for the Liverpool DC. It was partly newbuild and partly converted warehouse, and like a rabbit warren. Most of us were in the new part but Dave & Fiona were in the old part and there was a long, winding corridor to get to their room. They were very understaffed that weekend meaning long queues for breakfast and at reception - which we all needed to visit every day as the key cards lost their info after 24 hours.

I too would love to come to Liverpool but it's not going to work out for me either, Joyce. I'm very sad about this as I really love meeting up with all the lovely forum members who are such good company. Sorry guys I haven’t been very present. Long story short, we had a fire. We are unhurt and we are working through all of the stuff that now needs doing. Nightmare but could have been worse. Anyway ... I would advise booking on the night if you can as Caro says it avoids disappointment. Anyway ... I would advise booking on the night if you can as Caro says it avoids disappointment. I won’t be able to join you guys early as I have the ballet on Friday but if you are around later on I may see you then. If not then Saturday. I have updated the meal thread.

Pat - I’m sorry I didn’t respond to your email, work stuff got in the way - then the fire. You will be missed and I hope to see you soon :)

So sorry to read about the fire Jerry. Thinking about you. That must have been a real nightmare for you, especially trying to clean up afterwards. So sorry I will be missing all the fun in Liverpool, but I hope the opportunity to meet up will come again soon. Take care. xx

Thanks guys. Insurance companies move slow, so building work is yet to begin but we will get there. They always look to do the cheapest thing so first it’s let’s see if we can clean this or that before we admit it’s fit for the bin. Can we repair this or that that is also fit for the bin. It’s a nightmare and we aren’t getting anywhere quick. But it could have be worse. Just a few cuts from glass and very minor burns from trying to put the thing out. I’m too stubborn for my own good I guess. Well that’s how the fireman saw it anyway. Anyway one step at a time.

My house will probably still be a building site when we go for the meal so I’m sure I’ll enjoy the break.

Sorry to hear about the fire, Jerry. You are looking at things the right way - that's exactly what I said, I was lucky really 'cos it could have been much worse.

So sorry to hear about the fire, what a terrible shock for you and Kev. The main thing is you are both OK, the house damage will be fixed and things can be replaced. People are not so easy to fix and replace. A good night out with us lot will do you the world of good!

:grouphug: Jerry, so sorry to learn about the fire. It must be hard, the insurance money will help but can't replace items of sentimental value, but as others have said by far the most important thing is that nobody was hurt. Take care x
