I think Katie Boulter deserves her own thread as she qualified for Beijing beating Lara Arruabarrena ranked 76. Unfortunately she is drawn against the experienced Kirsten Flipkens ranked 58. They played on grass earlier this year when Kirsten won 6-4 5-7 6-3 in the Southsea final.

Certainly Katie showing promise , looks tough challenging opening round though.
Unfortunately Katie lost a close one 7-5 in the third.

Good news for Katie Boulter! Having missed out on the first Lucky Loser spot she has another chance to play in the main draw - albeit, of course, at the expense of another player who had to withdraw.
Tennis on telly (https://twitter.com/tennisontelly)
Dominika Cibulkova withdraws from St Petersburg, Katie Boulter takes her place as a lucky loser, will play Ekaterina Alexandrova first up tomorrow.

Sadly, Katie just lost 4-6 3-6. Was watching the second set scores - she did break a couple of times but then could not hold her own serve.
This is a bit worrying (From today’s Times).
“Katie Boulter’s recent Fed Cup heroics have come at a price. The British No 2 has been ruled out of the French Open and is a doubt for Wimbledon after a back injury turned out to be more serious than initially feared.
Boulter, 22, pushed her body to the limit last month to help Great Britain claim promotion to the World Group level for the first time since 1993. Despite clearly struggling physically during her match on the opening day of the tie against Kazakhstan, she returned to action about 20 hours later to seal the winning point.
Since then, Boulter has not played a match, withdrawing from lower-tier tournaments in Spain this week and last. The full extent of her injury is still unclear but sources have told The Times that she has already had to cancel her clay-court tournament schedule. She was due to make her first appearance in the main draw of the French Open later this month.”

Katie confirmed, yesterday, she's had to pull out of the French Open because of a bad back. She was still hoping to play, but was advised against it.

Nope, she never had any intention of playing. However by remaining in the draw, and pulling out in person, she was eligible for 50% of the first round prize money.
She is getting abuse for it in the press, but given how hard it is for the lower ranked players to make a living, and after her Fed Cup heroics, I don’t blame her at all.

Yep, it's within the rules so why not? Doesn't feel quite right to me but that's the rules' fault ...
Katie withdraws from Wimbledon with her ongoing back injury.

Not all that easy for Osaka. Katie took set 1, 6-3, went 0-4 in set2, had a point to get back to 4-4 but Osaka took that 6-3 and the next 3 games before Katie held serve for the last game she would win today.

Katie Boulter fighting so hard to break back, just had AD but Sabalenka serves so incredibly well and saves the break point. Boulter gets AD again!!!
This game alone has gone on for almost 10 minutes.
All this to get back on serve in the 3rd set.

We all need to cheer loudly for Katie Boulter - last Brit standing in the singles at RollyG.
She's playing Paula Badosa ... and leads by a set and break in set 2.
Serving at 6'4, 2'1 up.

Don't want to jinx her!

Katie is doing amazingly well.
Its a bit difficult watching them and working out who is who if you take you eye of the screen for a few minutes as they both have the same dress on and same hairstyle.

Badosa took the 2nd set 7'5 having broken Katie's serve at 5'6. I was hoping for a tie-break.
Katie broke in the first game of set 3 and had points for a 2-0 lead but Badosa broke back
and has just held for 2-1.

at 4-2 up in the second I could only see Katie winning, after that Badosa seemed to focus on keeping the ball in court and moving Katie around. Badosa won three games in double quick time and it turned the momentum of the match. Katie's game isn't really suited for clay, she hits too flat although it worked well for a set and a half. Her movement and lack of feel on the ball also got found out later on.
Still, it was a good performance for the most part against a former top ten player who's on the up again.
It is a shame Katie lost but she put in a good effort considering clay is not her strong surface. She is in doubles later on today with Heather.
Katie Boulter is now 31st in the world rankings.
