View Full Version : Fed Cup Feb 6-9 2019 - Support thread -who is going etc.
As I said...
Here's the thread for those interested in going to Bath to support the GB ladies in their latest effort to qualify for the Federation Cup World Group.
Any suggestions re accommodation gratefully accepted!
I've been looking at Brindleys boutique bed and breakfast. According to the University of Bath's website, there is a charge of £1 per hour for their car park (but free on Sundays). They strongly recommend everyone either walk or take the bus there. Brindleys is less than a mile away from them.

Accommodation in and around Bath is very expensive all year round because it is such a tourist trap - even in February! The Uni is a good 30/35 minute walk from the town centre (station) and uphill (steep). Regular buses take 15mins from town to Uni.
Bath has very good train and bus links to local towns so an option might be to stay in Bristol which is approx 14mins to Bath by train + the add-on bus/walk to the Uni. Bristol also has a very cosmopolitan evening life and a much wider choice of budget hotels.

Premier Inn, King St, Bristol - short walk to Bristol Temple Meads stn - currently offering a fixed price for 4 nights of £129, or £197 cancellable. It's on the harbourside, easy access to lots of bars/eateries.
I was thinking of using my three free nights for Bath, which would give me a big discount.
Prices not too bad except for the Saturday night.

Bristol would be easier to get to as well but looking at the calendar, our school long weekend is that weekend but not till Friday so it's probably unlikely I'll make it
I just wish I was more interested in it ... I know that sounds awful!

I don't think I could manage a week at this. I remember when GB last staged a Fed Cup tie, 1993 in Nottingham. I was working as a volunteer driver at the event, and met some lovely people including a 14yr old Cara Black. GB (led by Clare Wood) won all of the group matches and their play off round without losing a rubber.

Sounds like it made an impression on you! I went for the last few days of the Fed Cup finals staged at Nottingham in the summer of 1991, Spain (Sanchez, Martinez) beat USA in the final and it was entertaining(Capriati won point for US) However doubt I'll make the February tie in Bath (hopefully GB team will find form and there will be some sort of coverage)
Thinking I might be interested, but not sure on the Bristol bit, would prefer to be in Bath, but happy to go with the majority if it comes off.
I thought at first I might be a teeny bit interested, but on reflection, it is not very 'doable' for me, so I will be giving it a miss.
Hoping to get to this, but would travel from home each day rather than staying in a hotel!
I'm in! - I hope :D will try and book the dates off work tomorrow
If it was somewhere easier to get to I would be interested, but Bath is a pain from here. I am also going to be away for 3 weeks next year already, and might need to pop over to Ireland at some point. So I think it’s a no from me.
Righto folks
Because I mostly had nothing else to do (reading of secondary school prospectuses only gets me so far!) - I've been having a bit of a butchers around for potential cheap places to stay (and I don't mean grotty)
There are several options on Airbnb that we could do as a group, so as an idea of numbers that could potentially be interested in sharing a whole house etc for duration, please can you "thanks" this post. that way I can keep a track on how many would want to share and also gives me an idea of how big a place I need to be looking for ;)
Reasonably priced too, ranging from around £84 per night to £172 per night (not each!) so by the time we split that between a few of us shouldn't be an arm and a leg

I would be interested, glenys, if it came with free parking. I would be able to take three other people to the university with me, as long as they help pay towards the petrol.

I might be interested. Travel to the campus is one of the things putting me off. My Blue Badge gives free parking, and I would be quite happy to chip in for Petrol.

I was a driver at that event as well. I took the Spanish team to and from the player party. Aranxta sat with her feet up on the minibus dashboard all of the way there ! I did so many airport runs for that event I practically lived on the M42.
I contacted the university about their parking charges. They told me to contact another company, which I did, and I'm still waiting for their reply.
Now that I've checked my work diary, I can't do this. Could do the Saturday only, so not for me this time.

I'm not so familiar with the Fed Cup format. Will GB be playing on the Weds and Thurs regardless of the draw? I might be able to do the whole tie, but if I can only do a couple of days I obviously want to see GB.
It's 2 groups of 4, group games are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with the group winners playing each other on Saturday.
We better be drawn in one of the groups playing in Bath! - The other pools are playing in Poland I understand

When will we find out? I think I want to come down, if not for all of it, for some of it.
Well unless the ITF are idiots (hmmmm) They should put GB in the groups that will play in Bath, with Poland in the groups in Poland - I should imagine we'll know which pool we are in and soon
The article I posted in the Fed Cup thread clearly states that GB will play in Bath.

I think the draw is in January.
You're right; January 14th.
I've received a reply from the company who are organising the event. They've told me, they're in talks with the LTA but at this stage they won't be encouraging anyone to drive to the university and would prefer for me to drive into Bath and find somewhere else to park. But, Saturday they would be allowing people to park there and it would be £2 all day.

I don't think we are staying that far from the University, but i know there is plenty of public transport around

Ask them what the situation is if you are carrying a disabled person. When I looked on the website there was free parking for people with blue badges. It might solve your problem and mine....!!!

Any further updates on parking gratefully received because I've just booked the Premier Inn at Bristol Sidcot for my group. It's an hour away from Bath so we'll drive in for the tennis, but we're also hoping to do Cheddar Gorge, Wells Cathedral and some Cotswolds so opted for somewhere handy for everywhere. Really love that part of the country.
I've sent them another email asking them about blue badges.
I've received a reply from them, regarding the blue badge. Their reply is I would be allowed to park at the disabled bay at the university and the events coordinator will be made aware of my request. So, you can come with me Teresa and I would only charge £5 a day for the petrol.
They did say that anyone else, who is also thinking of driving there, would have to use the park and ride. But, that could change.
I've received an email from the events coordinator confirming that if Teresa displays her blue disabled badge in my car, they will allow me to park there for free. If anyone else wants to join us, please let me know as soon as possible. I can take another two people in my car.

Carole (themass15) and me have booked a one day stay, Thursday /Friday at the Combe Grove Hotel with free cancellation, a bit expensive but it is only a short walk away from the venue. Fingers crossed we are all lucky getting tickets. Would be good to met up with other members who are there for the Fed Cup.
It would be great to meet up with everyone else, who aren't staying with us.
You chose well, Glenys. I didn't know it had a lot of history and features in Frenzy, a film by Sir Alfred Hitchcock. According to the internet map, the house is just under two miles away from the university. I'll still be willing to give you, Teresa, and anyone else a lift for free.
I will be very grateful for the lift Stell, one of the things that put me off was the trudging about. Are you staying in Glenys’s Air B and B?
BTW thanks for all Glenys is doing with this. I might not have got it together, if someone else wasn’t doing the organising. We will need to coordinate ticket buying so we, (and dinosaurs) are all sitting together.

Yes I am, Teresa. If Glenys had found somewhere in Bristol, I would have had to charge for the petrol. But, as it's less than two miles, it'll be free as it'll cost me practically nothing to drive there. Don't forget to bring your blue badge, Teresa, otherwise I won't be allowed to park at the university.

I won’t forget. Getting a lift will make things a lot easier for me. I am a bit short on energy at the moment. I have been doing too much. I will still give you a tenner or something in respect of general car costs. That will seem fair to me.
I can take you there every day. We just have to arrange a time that we want to be there and what time we want to get back. I know one of my relatives owned a hotel in Bath, in the 1870s and 1880s, which is now Edinburgh Woollen Mill and another relative got married in Bath Abbey. I do want to go and have a look at them, while I'm there.
If anyone else, who is staying with us, doesn't fancy the walk to and from the university the offer will apply to you. I can only take an extra two people in the car.
How will we know what days GB are playing? Sorry, I know zero about Fed Cup. Just thinking I could maybe go on the Saturday and stay at my brother's. What days / how long is everyone staying??
I'll be there the whole time. I'll be at the university between the 6th and 9th. I think it'll take me about two hours to get to Bath.
There are 2 mini groups of 4, so GB will play a different opponent on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. They will only play on Saturday if they win their mini group.
There are 8 of us sharing an AirBnB in Bath from the Tuesday night until the Sunday morning, RB is staying in Brizzle with her usual gang of ladies, and Jackie55 and themass15 are going for a couple of days and staying in a posh hotel. If anyone else is intending going, they have kept it to themselves!

Good old Premier Inn, Caro, where else, do other hotels even exist?!:big grin: The one we've booked is a converted Victorian Manor House, looks quite nice and well located for the other things we want to try and do. We are hoping to attend the whole tie, but due to several things that are unknowable at the moment we may be limited to as little as just one day - if that's the case I think we'll go on the Friday; GB will definitely still be in and it's Hawkeye's birthday.
I don't know much about Fed Cup either, but as the weeks pass I don't feel any better at all about what's happened to DC and honestly cannot see myself ever going to the atrocious new format. I think I prefer to stop going, keep my happy memories and try to make new ones at the Fed Cup, an event that hasn't sold its soul! Now that it's booked I'm really looking forward to it - live tennis with a group of forumers in a gorgeous part of the country, what's not to like!:thumbup:
I dithered about going, but now that I have committed I am really looking forward to it. I agree with RB about D.C.

Sorry - yes, hoping to go but have not posted yet. Could be our usual 4 in an airbnb if all goes to plan (ie Nessie, Fentiger and mrpips plus myself). My concern is that I believe there is only a capacity of about 2000 so what chance of getting tickets?
Sally is going to ask for tickets for our whole group, just like DC. I'd be astonished if it sells out.
Not sure if I'll go every day - ticket prices will be one factor. Probably have to park near a station and then go into Bath by train followed by bus to the university, as parking anywhere in Bath is ridiculous. Alternatively I drive right past the university to get to the Park & Ride before getting two buses back!!
I'm taking Teresa, so I can take you as well jaysee. You would have to park in the road, where we're staying. It'll be up to you if you want to contribute to the petrol, which Teresa is very kindly will be doing. Let me know.
I had the BATS e-mail this morning. It reckons that a 4 day ticket is going to be about £100. Not too bad at all.
Tickets go on sale at 10am on the 13th of next month for all BATS members. Will Sally try and get tickets for us?

Sally has already said she is going to. I imagine once she has recovered from jet lag and caught up at work, she will be on the case. Don’t worry.
I'm not worried, it's just I've got my parents 50th wedding anniversary in three weeks time. My aunt and uncle, my mum's sister and brother-in-law, will be coming from Shropshire to Exeter to stay with my sister, brother-in-law and niece. We're going to have a celebratory meal at a restaurant in a golf club, but my dad now has the mind of a small child and does things that a small child would do. I'm hoping he doesn't embarrass us at the restaurant.
Really looking forward to this, wanted to do Fed Cup for an age!
I've also asked Mo if we can borrow the AMFF flag for the occasion
I am looking forward to it as well. Had a look on the Fed Cup website. Ticket prices are only about £12 a day.

Me too - will be great for our girls to have a bit more support for a change.
The ticket sale date rushed up on me a bit too quickly (it doesn't help that my mind has been on all the things I need to do before going off on Thursday to spend 6 weeks in the US) and I'm kicking myself for not having checked back earlier to see whether anyone was getting a group together. I'll just have have to go for tickets tomorrow and hope, though I'm wondering whether the seats are actually numbered anyway - it always looked like the seats were unreserved in Estonia and Israel.
Anyway, I hope to see some of you in Bath in February :-)
I've sent you a PM, Sally.

“Colin Fleming, the former Davis Cup player and sometime doubles partner of Andy Murray, has been confirmed as the new coach for Great Britain’s Fed Cup team.
Fleming will take over the role in time for the zonal stage of next year’s Fed Cup competition, to be staged in Bath from Feb 6-9, which will be the first major women’s team event to be hosted in this country since 1993.”
Extra bonus for those of us going. I hope he will be there.

Hey fellow Bathers, are we going to do a group meal? If so, surely makes sense to do it on the Friday eve, as unlike DC it finishes on the Sat so we'll be travelling home then. I've checked and there's a 'Bill's' in Bath, and that's always a good bet, but happy to go with the flow.

Fed Cup, Europe/Africa Zone Group I event, 6-9 February 2019
draw and other information https://www.fedcup.com/en/draws-results/group-i/europe-africa/2019.aspx
For both 'events' there's a Round Robin format on Wed/Thu/Fri. Winners of Pool A play winners of Pool B on Saturday 9th February to determine which nation will advance to the World Group Play-offs in April - location tbc. 2 nations will be promoted (one from each of Event A & B) and 2 nations relegated (one from each of Event A & B)
Event B: HOSTED BY GREAT BRITAIN (at BATH)
Pool A: Great Britain, Hungary, Greece and Slovenia.
Pool B: Serbia, Croatia, Turkey and Georgia
Event A: HOSTED BY POLAND (at Zielona Gora)
Pool A: Russia, Poland and Denmark (and 1 Bye)
Pool B: Ukraine, Estonia, Bulgaria and Sweden
Anne Keothavong's side, who are set to contest Fed Cup on home soil for the first time in 25 years next month, have avoided Croatia and their star player Donna Vekic - the highest ranked player in the event at No. 29 - in the group stages, but will come up against world No. 43 Maria Sakkari of Greece in Group A. Their draw is by no means straightforward, with reigning Australian Open doubles champion Timea Babos leading the line for Hungary and world No. 82 Dalila Jakupovic heading up Slovenia, but the British team of Johanna Konta, Heather Watson, Katie Boulter, Harriet Dart and Katie Swan will be confident of earning a place in the promotion play-offs for the third straight year.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also 6-9th February, same format as above.
Americas Zone Group I, Colombia (Medellin)
Paraguay, Mexico, Colombia and Ecuador face off in Group A

Asia/Oceania Zone Group I, in Kazakhstan (Astana)
Kazakhststan, India and Thailand in Group A.
China P.R.,Korea Republic, Indonesia and Pacific Oceania in Group B

Hi everyone
I've sent PMs as follows:-
a) payment request
b) a note about eating out on Friday night - no replies needed!
c) a note about catering for those sharing the airbnb.
I'll send a further note tomorrow about logistics for the event, timings etc.
:thanks:
For those of us staying in the Airbnb, what are the logistics about access and time of arrival? I need to book my train, and I have never used Airbnb before, so have no idea.
You can "check in" after 3pm - let me know you ETA and I'll let the hosts know - same with everyone else. If you can DM me your ETA's I'll let them know what time to expect folks

Shhhhh! I hadn't told them that bit! ;)
They seem to have changed the route for bus U1 - it now stops on Rossiter Road behind the station, rather than Dorchester St, and no longer serves the Guildhall/North Parade (although there is a half-hourly bus, no.10, from the Guildhall. https://www.firstgroup.com/uploads/node_images/U1_U2-WEB_0.pdf
What sort of time are people staying in the B and B arriving? I get in about 14:00 by train, but will pootle round Bath until about 17:00.
Is anyone else intending to visit the Roman Baths? It seems that as a “disabled person”, I can take somebody else with me, for free, which makes it half price each. So if anyone else wants to go I will hold off on Tuesday.
I also fancy Stonehenge and Old Sarum, (Given my current dispair with politics across the globe), a visit to a former Rotton Borough would seem fitting). There are various buses that go. Anyone else fancy a trip?

There is a route out of the station which takes you across the river Avon via Halfpenny Bridge and onto Rossiter Road to pick up the bus U1, about a 5minute walk I think.

I'll probably arrive at 3pm at the B&B.
The Roman Baths are well worth a visit. If you decide to 'pootle' on Tuesday afternoon but not see the Roman Baths it's work going up to the Assembly Rooms (10min walk from Station) which is free entry and there's a wonderful Cafe open to the public which is light and airy and serves good stuff.
Old Sarum/Stonehenge. I don't know about buses from Bath although I'm sure there are and it's probably easier to do that as otherwise it'd mean going by train to Salisbury and then bus from there.
I'm not arriving till Wed. Will sort something out with Sally as regards time and what's convenient for peeps. I'm not that far away so don't need to travel Tues and besides M hasn't given me a pass out for enough nights
Great, I'll give your name as the first arrival with the host :D - can anyone else staying at the B&B PM me with ETA's for arrivals - I need to work out if the host has to "sign" each one of us in or if Sally can let the rest of us in - that'll make more sense on Tuesday Sally ;)
Done Stonehenge - fancy the baths, never managed to get there when Phil and I went to the area for our wedding anniversary last year. Not sure what the timings etc are going to be like though. Will go with what ever others want to do as I'm without transport ;) - cheapskate me LOL
Anyone want me to bring a couple of Murray Wimbledon/Olympic Finals DVD’s in case we are bored in the evenings?
Great Idea - I can even bring the DVD of Ward v Isner if we have a spare 5 hours to kill LOLOLOLOLOL ;)

Only one week to go! (even less for others who are going). I'm really looking forward to it - I initially wanted to go as a consolation over DC because I can't bear to mope over things that can't be changed, but as it nears I'm very much looking forward to FC in its own right. Let's go GB, let's go! :GBflag::cheer:
I am looking forward to it as well. Have been getting organised, as I am off to London for the day tomorrow. My dog is going on several different doggie sleepovers whilst I am gallivanting about. Fortunately she likes all the places she goes.

I think Sally is going to organise something, he said nudgingly...
AMFF LUNCH (this'll be a first!) Friday 8th February
We're booked at Wagamama, 1 George St, Bath. 12 for 12.30pm for 16* of us (2 tables of 8 in our own 'area'). We do not have make any choices in advance. They offer a wide range of food so those with dietary issues will be able to eat something!
It means there's time afterwards to shop (that'll be me ...) or pick up evening 'food' en-route to catch the bus up the University. Time beforehand to look at some of the 'tourist' stuff in the city centre too.
*Sally, Pabbers, Hawkeye, RosieBear + 1, Nessie, Mr Pips, Goldfish, Fentiger, Glenys, Teresa, Stell, Liz, Maud, TheMass and Jackie55.

Arrived in our lovely Airbnb in Bath. Outside the city centre so hopefully a flat walk to the university and a bit of pleasant exercise before hours of sitting - or leaping up and down as is customary!
Safe journeys everyone and delighted to hear that the banner is on its way too. Good luck to the team and I look forward to seeing you all on Facebook.

Are our guys wearing red or blue? I'm not on Facebook nor do I have BT sport so have only seen some pictures on Twitter. Saw lots of red and some blue. Was trying to make out if I knew anyone. BBC not being very helpful with their lack of updates on their web page.

Half the crowd is wearing red... Our small group is behind umpire, 6 roes up in the middle. Teresa and in disabled at front opposite GB bench.
Good start from GB! I thought Katie was very solid in her first Fed singles. I didn't catch Johanna's match so was pleased to see that she had come through too.

What a blast we all had in Bath - a superb 4 days with the most amazing matches to watch, so much tension, so much to celebrate, a lovely meal together celebrating Hawkeye's birthday, great venue and volunteers. So pleased to have been able to support this event in person with other forum members. Thanks for your company folks, We just hope there will be more ....
Looks like a fabulous few days. Glad you all had a good time.
Slightly irked to hear that Murraynators got all the fan praise in commentary ... again  It’s good to hear fans getting recognition but do they not understand that there are several dedicated fan groups who attended every day?! I mean BATS have been attending Fed Cup for YEARS and (correct me if I’m wrong) this is the first time either AMFF or Murraynators have been.
Sorry, it just annoys me. They should mention everyone or no one. I remember the time Jamie thanked all the fan groups individually after DC and left us out as well. Not that I’m bitter or anything ;)

In reply to all of the previous posts re the next round, after speaking to stats guru Steven in the pub tonight whilst celebrating, the 8 teams involved will be seeded by Fed Cup rankings as of Monday, and the top four teams will play the bottom 4. We are unlikely to be in the top 4. He did say who might be seeded but my Peroni-addled brain has forgotten...
Thanks Hawkeye. Makes sense that there would be seeds.....and that we won't be among them. Hoping we avoid Italy as that looks like a definite away tie for us. Japan would be a definite home but would be good to avoid Osaka!

If it is a home tie, does anyone have any thoughts about venue. Given that the LTA will likely look to make an event of it, would Bath be big enough ? If not, then Birmingham ?, Glasgow ?
What a fab time I had in Bath. Fantastic tennis..... can't understand what's wrong with watching women's tennis. Great to meet up with AMFFers, just a shame more couldn't come.

Would be great if it was in Birmingham but short notice and Easter. Hotel prices will be through the roof.

Multiple thanks due
To Hawkeye for suggesting the whole thing, (and letting me muscle in on the Stonehenge Trip).
Glenys for organising the Bunglalow
Sally for organising the tickets, the catering, and all of us.
Pabbers for keeping Sally sane, and the tremors when pouring wine, so smallglasses became large glasses......!!!
Lizzie and Maud for keeping us all entertained, and letting me join them at Stonehenge.
Stell for taking me and others up to the venue.
Jo, Katie x 2, Harriet and Ann K for shredding my nerves in ways not seen since AM’s Grandslam Finals........

Lovely to see so many of you last week! Hope it's London, in which case I hope to see lots of you again. My back won't cope with the train journey to Bolton, so I really hope it's not there - at least with the Glasgow ties, it was possible to get a sleeper up there!
