Dominic played much better in 2nd set but, unfortunately, not well enough
Kei Nishikori a game away from a straights set win over Fed... And he'll have at least one serve for it!
Nishikori beats Federer 7 - 6, 6 - 3 - fantastic - well done :yahoo: :yahoo: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:
And Nishikori takes out Federer in straight sets 7:6, 6:3 Happy day:-)
Fed beat himself there - I don't think I've ever seen him make so many unforced errors. Kei didn't play brilliantly but he played well enough to win - well done, Kei!

Just caught up on Sasha Z and Cilic. Was Lendl always that 'wasted' when he watched Andy? He looked half asleep - perhaps it was jet lag!

Was glad to see Sacha come through against Cilic though was not a great display from Marian still Zverev was the one able to capitalise on opportunities, pretty straightforward for Djokovic over Isner. Anderson/Thiem still the best encounter thus far this week.

2nd set very good in that match. I was lucky enough to be there and looking forward to going again to see Thiem v Fed this evening.

What is the matter with Kei? Is he injured?
What is the matter with Kei? Is he injured?
Dunno, I guess playing Federer took it out of him.
THis is what Kei said
"I don't even know why I didn't play well today, missing a lot. I don't know. I just didn't feel the ball today. It wasn't my day today," said Nishikori. "I hope I can have a good practice tomorrow, a good session of hitting and just try to forget about today."

Kevin played out of his skin which didn't help Kei at all. He said it was the best match he had ever played.
Kevin chance of getting to the semis according to the above ATP article.
Anderson will become the first African player to qualify for the semi-finals at the elite eight-man event if Dominic Thiem beats Federer, or the Swiss defeats Thiem in three sets, on Tuesday night.

A bit of a stroll for Fed this evening.
I don't know about anyone else, but I am finding the singles matches very underwhelming so far. Thiem is pathetic tonight. Doubles much more fun to watch.
Absolutely - couldn't agree more!
I was looking forward to the match between these 2 all day !

Well kei was very disappointing and only avoided the double bagel, Fed may have been a bit better but Thiem hardly gave him much of a challenge.

I said the same on another thread-I always prefer the doubles here.
Very disappointed to see the result of the Fed/Thiem match. Hope Kevin puts up more of a fight.

Agree that the Next Gen matches were MUCH more exciting and I prefer both De Minaur and Tsitsipas to most of the players in this tournament TBH! In fact I'm not a big fan of any of them except Kevin and that's mainly because I love how much he loves his dog :laugh: Dominic is ok and I don't mind Cilic either unlike most people it seems. I'm glad I decided not to go this year.
I really want Kevin to win this. He is playing so well and really deserves it ... but I can't see him beating Novak.

I agree too that the NextGen matches were far more interesting and exciting. Those young players not only played great tennis but really fought to win. Munar in particular was impressive. I'm not a fan of Tsitsipas and would have preferred De Minaur to have won the title.
As for the ATP finals I was very disappointed in Dominic's lack of fight against Federer.
I too would love Kevin to win. It's funny you saying that about Kevin and his dog because I too am influenced by what I hear about players and their dogs. I loved Fernando Gonzales because he rescued a drowning dog from a river and Delpo because of losing his dog Cesar early this year. And of course Andy and his two dogs. :big grin: :maggie:
I must confess I've not seen any of this and can't get enthused (though I am also very busy, which might have something to do with it.) I could definitely live with Anderson winning!

Well I like Marin too, Caro. Apart from his wriggly, twitchy pre-service action, he's ok to watch. And he really does come across as a nice person. I like how he interacts with kids. Don't know whether he has a dog though! Kevin has really come to the fore this year and he too is a good person. It would be a lovely finish to his year if he could pull this one off on his first visit to the WTFs. Is Kei out of the running?

Good first set this afternoon between Djoko and Sascha but once the break points were saved in the first set it was one way traffic. Hopefully the match tomorrow afternoon between Thiem and Kei will be a lot better.
Biggest excitement all week. Andy is at the O2 watching Cilic and Isner. Just great to see him (and his closely cropped new hairstyle!)

Why don't you like Tsitsipas?? I am a big fan. He is definitely the real deal and I find him really exciting to watch. He's a bit different personality wise too. I really like De Minaur too.
Yes, Thiem's performance was pretty woeful from what I saw although I got bored TBH! I come and go with Zverev, can't decide if he's too arrogant for my taste but I am on the fence at the minute. He's good to watch when he's on.
Sigh. Another anticlimactic match tonight. I thought it might have been closely fought and exciting, but no. I really did think Kev might have even won this one. Thank goodness for Jamie and Bruno keeping the interest in this event alive.
well , predictable really .... wish there was a barf emoji LOL
So, the semis are confirmed...
Rog will play Zverev and Nole will play Anderson.

I like Stefanos a lot and de Minaur. I don't like Sasha either - or Rublev. Each to their own, I guess. All good.
What wouldn't I give for a Zverev v Anderson final ........... just to put all those sycophantic commies in their place! Sadly, it ain't going to happen. It would be good to have a GB/Braz v France final in the doubles though - fingers crossed!
Match point Zverev...
He's done Fed in straights!
Sad about Jamie, but Feddykins being knocked out almost makes up for it. I wonder what his excuse will be today?

Good match and Zverev certainly deserved the win, Seemed strong today though was a bit emotional after the reaction of a section of the crowd. Maybe controversial with some Fed fans but call to replay point after ballboy dropped ball correct, though happened after Zverev stopped play. Sacha mostly controlled the match today and it was the missed volley that really put paid to Fed's chances (was not his best performance but Zverev put him under pressure) Annabel Croft said she bumped into Lendl afterwards and he was annoyed that Sacha apologised!
yay for Sasha
agree with James , was the correct call to replay the point
what disgusting booing from the crowd

I had a bit of a soft spot for Sascha as he looks uncannily like my nephew. Wasn't so sure after a few comments here and there along the way but he sealed it for me today. Felt for him enormously at the end there. What a revolting bunch of idiots in the crowd.
Really can't see Fed winning another slam. Not watched a lot of the WTF this week but the little I've seen of Fed, thought he was certainly looking older and slower - comes to us all!

I'm pretty sure that the ballboy dropped the ball before Sascha stopped play - why would he have stopped otherwise? I agree with Lendl - there was no reason for Sascha to apologise to the crowd. Shame on the Fed fans who booed - it just shows how ignorant they are of the rules of tennis. Congratulations to Sascha on a great win!

Maybe my post was not quite clear but that was obviously the case, just indicating that the umpire had not noticed first.
Djokovic and Anderson warming up. I'm not usually an Anderson fan, but on this occasion...…..:thumbup:
If there was a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct for the crowd, that should have been given to a section of the crowd at the O2 this afternoon. To respond as they did to Sascha was totally unsporting. Surely true sports fans simply would not behave like that? Even when the result doesn't go their way, the true sports person still always respects the winner and accepts that the he/she was the best on the day.

A pity that Kevin couldn't make more of a match of it but Djoko's on a roll. I do object to Peter Fleming saying that the Djokovic Andy beat in the 2016 final wasn't the same Djoko who is playing now though. Andy was just brilliant in that final and all the commies had written him off!

I'm disappointed too that Kevin couldn't make more of a match but it's the end of a great year for him. I was really hoping he would win the title - it'd have been great for South African tennis and Kevin.
We will never forget that fantastic end to Andy's 2016. Andy certainly was brilliant in his victory of Raonic and then Novak.

Yes they showed some footage of old matches including of course Andy's , Marcus said goodbye from everyone and at the end it said thanks for the memories!
Enjoyed the match tonight (at last!) Well played Sascha, and well done Djok in defeat (as always.). Loved Sascha's speech, he is quite a wit! Entertaining. And like others, esp when the blue glitzy stuff came floating down, all I could think of was 2 years ago. Engraved in my memory is Andy surrounded in a haze of the floaty blue. And how we posted and posted all evening and how everyone was too excited to go to bed! Maybe next year?
Really pleased to see this result - well done lad!!

I was there yesterday and the behaviour of a lo of the crowd was apalling. I am always prepared to feel like I'm at a Swiss Davis Cup tie when Federer plays but this was a whole new level. A woman. Ear us was booing when Zverev hit aces, for most of the match the applause whenever he won a post not was muted , Fed got wild acclaim for remembering to breathe. Their reaction after the match was shocking. My friend is usually really reserved at matches - even if with us at Dvis Cup- and she was moved to yelling fir Zverev to try and drown out the Fed luvvies . ( I couldn't refer to them as fans) Such a shame- for both players as I'm sure Federer doesn't actually like to have his opponents treated like that. There was a wee boy there with his dad at his first ever live tennis , a big Federer fan and his dad was shocked at the impression it was giving his son.
Fed worship is very cult like In some ways. Not healthy.

I must admit I do get a bit alarmed when I see the extent to which people go in their adulation of Roger. It used to be just the Swiss, but now it seems to be fairly world-wide.
The media don't help of course, by creating this 'God' like image of him. It's almost, but not quite, at a pop star level. I hope he doesn't have people camping outside his house.

It's hard, if not impossible, not to admire Roger's achievements but I still find it difficult to actually warm to him. I think it stems initially from comments he made in the past that other players would not have got away with but nowadays the sycophantic adoration from fans and commentators just makes me more and more reluctant to join in. How can a set be described as flawless when you've had your serve broken and been 0-40 in another game? Harsh criticism, maybe, and yes, it's not Roger saying these things himself but I feel he does play up to it. Very decent to support Zverev over the incident in the SF though and I do actually wish him all the best for the rest of his years on tour. Please can we have our Andy back though.

As I have posted on here some while ago I went off Federer after he beat Roddick at Wimbledon in 2009 and put on the Jacket with 15 on it. I think his fans have become much worse behaved over recent years, particularly when he played Andy at the 02 a few years back. Saturday just topped the lot though.

I was at the semi last year when Fed was beaten by Goff (I know you were there too). We were sat quite close to at group of Fed fans and I just screamed my head off for Goff the whole match, on my feet after every point etc (normal for me anyway ;) ). Actually they weren't badly behaved that particular group but absolute stony silence when he lost :laugh: I just couldn't get over the level of adulation though ... I mean grown men in I heart Federer t-shirts ... purrlease!
Never liked Federer. Never will. Yes, I can respect he's a great player but that's it. I only watch him play if it's a final or he's playing one of my faves.
I actually quite like watching him ... not because I like him but because I usually passionately want his opponent to win and it fires me up!

I, for one, absolutely *love* watching Federer - think he's probably the most naturally talented player I've ever seen. I have zero problem separating the person and the craft - I'd have to deny myself an awful lot of films, art, literature, music etc if I got hung up on the personal characteristics of the offerer. Don't see tennis any differently.

Yes they showed some footage of old matches including of course Andy's , Marcus said goodbye from everyone and at the end it said thanks for the memories!
What is happening to the Sky team - have they moved over to Amazon or have they lost their jobs?

I don't think Marcus is moving over. Annabelle and Greg worked on the US Open for Amazon so imagine they will continue. Catherine Whittaker (also Eurosport) was the main presenter for Amazon.

Enjoy watching Federer play, can't abide the sycophants in the crowd- I mosstky laugh if they are overly dressed up fawning diehards. But the lack of sportsmanship towards opponents I can't abide - and I do appreciate that amidst that are real tennis/Fed fans and it's a shame for them to be tarred by same brush. When Andy got that treatment v Fed at the O2 in 2012 it inspired my pal and I to make the trip for 2013. Been every year since so I suppose I should thank them lol. The pity is the Fed v Zverev match was a good match. And loved the match v Goffin last year. One of the best matches I've ever seen at O2 was Fed v Del Po in 2013.
Haven't heard what the Sky team will do, some worked the US open. Hope to see them back on a screen somewhere! Especially Marcus.and Fleming.

Agree totally. Im a Federer fan, but he does come across as arrogant. Im also a Murray fan, Zverev, in fact I like most players tennis, with one or two notable exceptions . But its nothing to do with the person .

And how many of us actually 'know' the person we see on court or on tv. What attracts us to a player may be just their public persona or 'game face'.
Very true that of course we don't 'know' any of the players but how they come across has to influence whether we like them or not surely?
I completely agree with Westie re: the Fed fans at O2. It's not his fault of course and his tennis is good to watch .... but it still fires me up to cheer for his opponent when there are people in crowd as fanatical and frankly unsportsman like as some at the O2 were.
