Not before 6pm in Australia, 7am UK time, Andy will take on RBA who has promised to give no quarter despite knowing our man not feeling quite so 'hip' ...

... but here he is - raring to go. Taz Murray. He leads their H2H 3-0. (https://www.atptour.com/en/players/fedex-head-2-head/roberto-bautista-agut-vs-andy-murray/BD06/MC10)

I will of course watch this match, but what crazy, mixed-up turmoil my head is in. I can't quite find the words to express how I feel about this one. I will be wondering all the while how much Andy may be hurting (both mentally and physically). He himself does not expect to win, but I expect, as ever, he will give it everything. It's not often I approach an Andy match with feelings of fear and dread, but I confess they are amongst my conflicting emotions. Main thing is, Andy, go and enjoy it as best as you can, and you just never know....we will always be there for you no matter what.

I'll have to watch the replay. If I'd known it may be his last match (hope not) I'd have booked the day off. Will be hell just having to check the score. :crying:

Hope Andy can play well despite the pain.

I feel sick! Usually I can't sleep with excitement the night before a match, don't know how I feel right now!

Will try to watch some before work as I don't think I can miss the result. Praying Andy feels amazing, miracles DO happen! Remember I was on here doing my pickems the day after a brain haemorrhage!

Saying it again.........Go Andy! :knight:

Stuart Frase (https://twitter.com/stu_fraser)As Andy Murray holds his opening service game, the capacity crowd let out a roar as if he had just scored a goal at Hampden. Terrific atmosphere in the Melbourne Arena, which is open to ground pass holders. #AusOpen (https://twitter.com/hashtag/AusOpen?src=hash)

Think they mean could be last match at this level, though Andy's desire is to bow out at Wimbledon not guaranteed. Likely there will be exhibitions but Andy did rule out playing ATP/ Grand slam Doubles (though could reconsider)

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is strange with its twists and turns
As every one of us sometimes learns
And many a failure comes about
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow—
You may succeed with another blow.
Success is failure turned inside out—
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell just how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit—
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

Etched in Andy's psyche!

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/live/2019/jan/14/andy-murray-v-roberto-bautista-agut-australian-open-2019-live

Fifth set: Murray* 4-6, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, 1-2 Bautista Agut (*denotes server): It’s worth remembering that this will go to a champion’s tie-break if it goes to 6-6; it would be first to 10 points in that scenario. But it might not get that far. At 15-30, Murray makes a couple of questionable choices. A drop shot isn’t good enough and a hopeful lob’s gobbled up by Bautista Agut, who finds himself with two break points. Murray saves the first with a polished smash, but he cracks on the second, a driven forehand down the line from Bautista Agut enough to break through. Murray needs more heroics now. But has he got anything left in the tank?

Whatever happens from now on, Andy won the bigger battle today because he showed why he is a tennis great. Fighting until the end and leaving everything on the court. The body gave up in the end but Andy the fighter played until the last point.

I agree Lynne. Can’t imagine for one moment he’s hanging up his tennis shoes. Let’s pray the op goes well and he comes back in some way or other. Tennis courts ARE his domain, hitting tennis balls IS his reason for being Andy Murray. The world is his oyster, and his next steps in it will be made plain enough in time. I look forward to continue being a great great fan of both the player and the man, and following him in whatever he does. Will keep all fingers and toes crossed that we see him at Wimbledon. I've not felt able to write much about all this.
I watched today up until the first tie break and then had to teach for one hour (I teach at home). I was well annoyed! I assumed he had lost that tie break and after 1 hour was trying to see a video of the end of the match fuming as Eurosport didn't appear to have put it on.
Then I discovered the match was still going on and he's won two sets!! What a warrior. I have a feeling that this isnt' the last we will see of our star on the court. I don't know why … perhaps I'm just in denial and I'm sure it will never be at what we've known.

I thought that RBA was a wonderful choice to be the player on the other side of the net. He played very well, never let the match situation get to him, didn't celebrate his points. He was just quiet and a gentleman (what I saw anyway and I did miss two sets). It was a great atmosphere in the stadium too - thanks to all those Australians who were so great at cheering for us when we couldn't be there. There were quite a few British too though I expect. What an emotional roller coaster - as it always has been. :grouphug:

Trying to write this through my tears. The tribute did it! Good that it was Petch conducting it.
There are no words, simply no words left to describe this amazing guy who is Andy Murray. Have you ever in your life seen such a sportsman. He certainly lived up to all that has been said about him these last few days. As everyone has been saying, regardless of the outcome, Andy is a winner today. It was a great match and despite the trepidation I was feeling as the match started, I thoroughly enjoyed it: like old times on the coaster. And as for the crowd...take a bow. They were amazing. Such support and love with which they cheered him on. That was very emotional too. It's such a shame that all that talent, shot-making, guile and fighting spirit is going to be overcome by injury. What an amazing 4+ hours we have had.

I am upset, but much less than I was expecting. No I don’t think he will return to the singles circuit, but a new hip makes a Doubles career, charity matches, Senior Tour perfectly attainable. Sorry but I really cant see Andy settling for a 'ceremonial' role, or playing only doubles. He has nothing to gain by doing that, and it would only diminish his reputation. Just my opinion. I can see him playing selected tournaments with the aim of finishing at SW19, as long as he's not getting beaten easily.

I can. It’s the competing and winning that matters to him. There are still valid ways he can do that, or why does Jamie bother? It’s just a change of mindset. Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are going to have to retire at some point. Didn’t they have to remove prize money from the Champions Tour because the older players were still so competitive?

I wasn't able to watch any of the match due to work and I am absolutely gutted for that. I did follow a bit on livescore but only in the first 3 sets before Andy won the 3rd. Do you know what? I am not in the least bit surprised he took it to 5. I actually thought beforehand that he might win ... I know that may sound fanciful, but his will and determination to win are second to none and I knew he would fight for his life out there. I will watch on catch up this evening, it's never the same but I do want to see it. I'll prbably skip the final set and just watch the very end of the match.

I agree with Teresa, I can't see him stepping away completely and I do think he'll be at Wimbledon even if he doesn't play between now and then ... I think they'll give him a wild card don't you? ;)

Teresa

“I agree with Teresa, I can't see him stepping away completely and I do think he'll be at Wimbledon even if he doesn't play between now and then ... I think they'll give him a wild card don't you?”

I think they would, be it this year or next, but I think he will have the operation as soon as possible. I think he will see it as a last throw of the dice. If he can play like that with the two parts of his hip rubbing against each other, bone on bone, then with a new hip he will probably be fine for other tournaments providing he balances his schedule. I genuinely don’t think a new hip will be up to five set Grand Slam matches. They are not designed for it.

I really do think the key for him is deciding whether he would rather play at a lower level, than not play at all. He needs a semi retirement. Tsonga, Berdych, Ferrer, Giles Simon etc have played their whole careers with no expectation of winning Grand Slams. They have still had excellent careers.

I still think Doubles will give him some of what he loves.

Compromise- but non of us are good at that...........

Only seen first half of match as had appoinment but will certainly catch up later, by all accounts a phenominal effort from Andy and so proud of him, just a pity he could not win one of the first two sets as the 5th proved a step too far. However his performance certainly gives hope it is not the final chapter, though can't see him playing too many events if to bow out at Wimbledon. After that though surely end of top level tennis and hip resurfacing only really about improving quality of life.

I still can't get over how well he played. After last Friday my expectations were probably rather low. Yes some movement issues obviously but also some pure vintage Murray shots. Not his style to go out with a whimper but the fight was amazing. So glad I could watch it. What a guy!!

So incredibly proud of Andy today - he did himself so proud!!
What a terrific atmosphere for him to play his last match at the AO.
I was watching it with all the fist pumping and murraycoasters from days of old. Almost forgot how injured he is!
I always thought I would get to watch him live at the AO - unlikely to happen now. Although he was sounding less definite of the end than he was. I think he will have the hip resurfaced and then might give it another crack.

I didnt see Kim - could it be he told her not to come over? Or was she too emotional and hiding somewhere where the press couldnt see her?
I spent a lot of the weekend crying - today I was okay until the player tributes came on. The main thing I wanted was that he wouldnt be humiliated. It turned out to be a true competitive battle - worthy of all of those years he's battled 5 sets at the AO. So I got an extra treat - to see a pretty much Murray of the past. Just a joyous experience! Thanks Andy!
