I must have misunderstood something as I thought this week’s ties were for 2019 qualification and not 2020. So will all the teams in this year’s finals also play in next year’s without having to qualify first? I had read it as a team had to reach the semis one year to be exempt from qualifying for the next year.
However, without having been able to see any of this round of ties, it does not surprise me that matches were short and lacking atmosphere.

You're right - it is the 2019 Final they are qualifying for. As for 2020 the rules are so complicated I may have got it wrong. It's still a rubbish format though

It is a strange format but at least they've kept the advantage. I just watched Canada beat Slovakia and it was pretty good - the tennis quality, I mean. Must say it was strange to see the doubles being played and then the last 2 singles matches on the same day. I suppose it makes sense in a way because sometimes the Sunday matches were redundant but it did feel wrong. I am still looking forward to the end of the year's final tho'. Should be a great week - as long as there aren't many injured players.
Qualifiers for this year's Davis Cup are in here. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/47100634
Australia, Germany, Serbia and Italy have won their Davis Cup ties to make it through to the 18-nation World Cup-style event in Madrid in November.
Belgium, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Netherlands and Russia also won their qualifying ties.
They join automatic qualifiers Croatia, France, Spain and USA, plus wildcards Great Britain and Argentina, in the finals.

Simon Briggs (https://twitter.com/simonrbriggs)Oh and Great Britain have got Kazakhstan and the Netherlands in the their group. If the No. 1s show up, and they probably will given cash on offer, that means Kukushkin and Haase

Cash on offer, Louis Vuitton trophy case.....this is what the Pique Cup is
Just hope GB don’t make the semis, so that we have a chance of a ‘proper’ DC tie in 2020
Andy has made the team, so thread moved accordingly...
Kyle gets the 5th spot.

I've read we play the Netherlands at 10am next Wednesday and then Kazakhstan at 10am next Thursday. The first quarter final starts at 5pm (17.00pm) next Thursday.

I've been taking minimal interest but now see it's not even on BBC. Is that right ? It's on eurosport and i have to get that via Prime I think. Really mucked it up haven't they! !!!
You're correct. When I found out the BBC wouldn't showing it, I was very disappointed with them.

The BBC has a live scoring and results page - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/live-scores

Davis Cup finals 2019: How the new event in Madrid will look #nothinglikethedaviscupshould
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/50156073
"Sometimes things have to change, or they have the risk to die," was Gerard Pique's blunt reasoning for the controversial reform of the Davis Cup.
Also sometimes things get changed so much they bear little to no resemblance to their original state? (in this case for the fans and chosen venues area/economy.)
If your statement is correct Gerard then I for one personalty hope that you and the other money grabbing crap heads responsible for this abomination don't change and you are all just one of "those things"
That will die along with your cup.
"We're getting run by a Spanish football player. That's like me coming out and making changes to the Champions League," Australia captain Lleyton Hewitt said earlier this year.:thumbup:
Although appreciated it's easier to speak your mind when you've pretty much hung up your racket.
"Change was necessary," said former British number one Tim Henman.
"Top players were not playing and you could understand the reality that if you were going to get to the finals, it was going to take up eight weeks of your year.
(that's still the case top players not playing) And if you made it to the finals you might just have something more than a case full of money. A heart full of pride and joy?
("Change was necessary,"??)
Well Tim that may be the case but we all as people of this earth have to make choices. I think that is the whole point, if the top players don't want to play that's still their choice,
and trying to entice them to play by either chucking more $ at them or watering it down does just that. It waters it's credibility down. The harder something is the greater the personal reward.
Anything worth it's salt is worth fighting for. We know Andy, Leon and the team know this, so it makes their silence re: the supporters a little annoying, but I think they're caught between a rock and a hard place.
I hope GB win it and realize it is just that. It ain't Coke. It's not the real thing.
So let's just all admit that the Davis cup is gone and this is not the Davis cup and call it what it really is.............
The money grabbing tv rights not for the supporters diluted shadow cup.
Or in other words The pique cup.

I hear change had to happen many times. I never got that. All the top players had won - which is sort of odd if they never actually played.... Also, whilst seeing Andy at his prime in 2015/16 etc was something special, it was also huge fun seeing the lower ranked players. For that, I'd also add in watching the Fed Cup too which I've seen more recently. It was always the wonderful atmosphere and not really relevant who the player was. It's ok to say things have to change if you're a journo who gets seats on planes and hotels and matches paid for anyway. Not for us!
I don't currently have Prime and normally only sign up when tournaments are on. I'd have to add on Eurosport to watch on my tv (I believe). The Crown was released on Sunday so Netflix may just pull rank...… Still undecided.
Teams on court ahead of the first rubber, Andy v. the excellently named Tallon Griekspoor.

A break for Andy, at last!!! 1 - 0 and serving
Andy finally breaks, on his third break point in the game, in the first game of set 2.
Not seen him off yet! - come on Andy!
Andy loses the break! I'm only following on F/S; is Andy's serve not working?, he doesn't seem to have settled.
Andy breaks again, *4-3.
Andy struggling in the longer points.
I'm listening to it on radio five live sports extra.
Andy consolidates the break, 5-3*.
"We're going the distance" says an excited Gigi Salmon as Andy wins the second set 6 - 4.
So on to set 3!. Th young whippersnapper is still on his heels but you can do this, Andy! (more stressful than I thought it would be).

Such a gutsy display as Andy digs deep from 1-4 n breaker to take it 7-5, well done! Given such a test and not always pretty but asked enough questions to put enough pressure on Greikspoor in the end. Certainly was physically demanding though.:clap::clap:
:clap::clap: Just sheer grit!!!.....Phew!...Not our usual Andy, but he is looking a bit in pain...but we can't complain under the circumstances...he did brilliant!!!:GBflag:
I hope that's just "first game in a while so the body is objecting" that Andy was going through there. He will definitely be needed tomorrow.
Thrilled he pulled it off as he was clearly struggling. Excellent play by Griekspoor whom I'd never heard of before this morning! x
I was hoping he wouldn't be needed again.
Have been out all morning so missed the drama.
Well fought Andy.
:GBflag:
I will never miss an opportunity to watch Andy play, and I really enjoyed watching that match. Andy was well and truly challenged and of course he won! (Even though he himself said he didn't deserve to win!) I'll say it again, it's just so good to have him back competing like that again.
As for the overall thing, I'm passionless. To me, it all seems very hollow and unreal, more like just another tourney. There is almost too much going on. Normally I enjoy the beginning of a tourney with lots going on, but not this time. I'm all over the place. Some of the intensity of only 2 teams going at each other has been lost, to my mind. Towards the climax of Andy's match, there did seem to be good crowd support, but it's hard to judge from TV. There have been complaints of lack of atmosphere. This morning, L'Equipe published a cartoon showing the umpire in his chair asking the crowd for "a little more noise please"! Overall I'm ambivalent about the whole thing. Results won't affect me in the same way. But, in the meantime, go Dan!
If we can win 3-0 it puts us in a great place. Come on Dan! :superman:
Dan off to a flying start - 3 - 0
Dan gets the first set 6 - 3......well done!! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :GBflag:

Watching Andy this morning really revealed why we all support him. That wasn't easy for him but he battled and fought to win through. So proud of him. I don't have the same feelings that the Real Davis Cup engendered. It's strange but happy to hear the crowd supporting. Perhaps I will change my mind, who knows? In the meantime am supporting our boys with enthusiasm as usual. So come on Dan!

Despite my feelings about this tournament I thoroughly enjoyed watching the GB team today. Andy was fantastic, Dan almost did it in the second set and then tried so hard in the third, Jamie and Neal played like a seasoned team and had a great win. Well done Neal Skupski on his debut. People seem to think there is something wrong with Andy as he wasn't seen during the dubs. He and Kyle disappeared and commentators were heard to say they'd left because they were probably playing tomorrow. Andy was probably very tired but I didn't hear anything about a problem.
Agreed Maureen. The only thing Andy owned up to was being a little overweight! He said the extra few kilos hampered his movement, but a few more matches should help shift that. I guess the chocolate biscuits are off limits now!

BBC reports about 1000 Brits in the 2500 capacity court which they say was about three quarters full. It was a fantastic days tennis and Andy was absolutely magnificent as usual, although clearly not fully functioning, not sure why. Dan was so near winning but just lost it in set 2. Jamie and Neal were great in doubles finishing in 2sets about 2hours later than scheduled. I believe this was the longest tie of the week so far at nearly nine hours. I would say it felt really little different to an old format DC. Btw LTA were generous tonight with some hospitality for a large number of the British supporters who have travelled. There were a good number of Netherlands fans here too so really a good atmosphere.
Thanks for the update exislander. Good to hear from inside the arena. The tennis was very entertaining. Enjoy tomorrow.

Best of luck to Jamie and Neal    :GBflag:
I've been watching the matches on bet365 but can't find Jamie's/Neal's!

Break point saved by Neal, now 4 - 2.
Jamie and Neal get a time code violation, but then Neal gets his serve broken. 4 - 4.
Leon Smith punches the air with delight, as Bublik has his serve broken. 5 - 4.

"4.30pm tomorrow afternoon against Germany" says an excited Russell Fuller. Looking forward to it.
Very strange on the match stats on the DC app. First serves is just a number rather than a percentage. I don't recall seeing that before. It really isn't terribly helpful.

Great win for the boys! Feeling sorry for Dan...he just can't get the 2nd set!
Enjoying the Doubles, but really don’t like this format. It’s not Davis Cup, and never will be. Grrrrrr
Posting this on the newspaper thread but belongs here too.

Loads of empty seats for Canada v Australia. Going to be another late finish there for the fans!

It is a quarterfinal too - not much atmosphere but there are a few supporters making a noise.

Just to say I loved today and finally watching a Davis Cup match. Great seat right behind the servers on the sixth row and I shouted myself hoarse, including being a bit rude to Carlos Ramos after he gave us a time violation ("after all that noise"?) - and I told him off in his own language! ;). The atmosphere was very different for the doubles match and thank goodness no coach seems to have told Bublik that a second serve is not another chance to hit a first serve (so many double faults and serving at 209/210/212 Km for second serves - that's about 132 mph!).
I saw enthusiastic fans from around the world - had a friendly chat in German with someboy about our match against each other in the QF). The main group of Canadians coming into the arena together... our own UK group... smaller contingents at the Canada Australia match (so wanted to see a certain Mr Krygios - who goes mental supporting the team on the side).
I am watching England play a test match against New Zealand and Ben Stokes getting out for 91. I saw his performances in the limited overs competition this summer. I like both formats of cricket. I like grand slams and ATP tournaments.
I realise the format is different from the classic Davis Cup format but I saw fans engaged today and the players and teams are certainly taking this for "real". I will cetainly be back next year!
What a fantastic day and if I get to see Andy tomorrow, icing on the cake!

Well I'm really chuffed that Canada has managed to beat Italy, USA AND Australia to get to the semi. Well done to our MVP, Vasek Pospisil. And also only two of our 4 players have played all three days. So there's that too!
I also watched Andy's match yesterday, both Team GB doubles, Rafa's matches and Team France's dubs. Good stuff!!!
Good luck Team GB and Team Canada! May they meet in the final. :icehockey: :GBflag:
Lynne and I both thought Dan was looking a bit on the thin side.
I thought so too. Perhaps that’s why he ran out of stamina. I do hope this doesn’t get him down. He’s such a charismatic player and I love watching him. A bit more training and putting on some more muscle might give him the staying power, therefore more wins, and put him right up there where he belongs. Go Dan!
Great win for the boys! Feeling sorry for Dan...he just can't get the 2nd set!
He was SO close to winning.
Stu Fraser reporting that it's Dan and Kyle for the singles.
Hope nothing too bad wrong with Andy.

Has to be some kind of injury, given it’s this one we have to win to avoid having to qualify next year.

Phew Andy is walking Ok.....Great!!,,,,,Apart from the fact we have Barry Cowan!

He was warming up Evo.
Kyle wins the first set 6 - 3.
Kyle can't handle the third break point as his serve gets broken. Now 1 - 3.
Could it be that Leon is going to pull a fast one, and switch to AM at the last moment?
Glad he is actually not playing Kohlscreiber at this stage of his recovery. I remember that horrible match when AM was returning from his back injury. It put years on me, and went down to the final set tie break.
Gigi Salmon gets very excited as Kyle breaks back.

kyle appeared to be in a bit of trouble not so long ago but firmly back on track, needs to hold now to avoid 3rd though at 4-5.
Gigi Salmon now gets herself extremely excited as Kyle breaks to make it 6 - 5.

Such a comprehensive service game and Kyle dealt with the Kohlschreiber challenge most effectively, shoul dgive him some confidence! Well done :clap::clap:
WooHoo! Brilliant Kyle! Now Dan - do your stuff. We’re right behind you!
YES!! After one hour and 21 minutes, he wins.
Well done Kyle. That was impressive.
:GBflag:Whoop! Whoop! Well Done Kyle!!! BraVO!!! :GBflag:
So pleased to see Kyle back on great form! Such a strong player - hope he keeps this confidence going next year.
Another epic performance for his country by KE.
Maybe his new coach has the easiest job in tennis?
Just tell Kyle he's playing for GB.
