View Full Version : Newspaper and internet reports for the Brits and general tennis
This thread is for posting articles on the British tennis players (except for those on Andy). It is also for posting general articles on tennis both at a general level and British tennis.
Andy's articles will still be posted on his offcourt subforum. Articles on individual ATP or WTA tennis players will still be posted as before on the individual tennis players' threads or the general ATP or WTA threads. General articles on ATP tennis etc can now be posted on here instead of on Andys thread.
If there is an article on an individual British tennis player that is very good and will get lots of discussion, then it can be double posted on the player's thread and discussed there. The same if there is an article about British Tennis organisations etc - they can be double posted
I thought it would be a good idea to have a separate newspaper thread for the british players and general tennis for the following reasons:
1. Now we have several british players playing very often they are mentioned in the same newspaper article making them dificult to post on individual threads.
2. It is also difficult for posters to post lots of different articles on different threads during busy times like grand slams. Each thread has to be checked to see if the article has been posted before and one can have to wade through lots of live scoring.
3. It is quite difficult for the reader having to go on lots of different threads to wade through lots of match scoring to find articles, especially if wanting to do a quick check.
4. It will be easier for people to find articles just relating to Andy in the original newspaper thread.
This is a bit of an experiment for now - so lets see how it goes.

Various tennis journalists reporting on Twitter the sad passing of Paul Hutchins, former DC player/captain and father of Ross Hutchins. It seems Paul had been suffering from Motor Neurone Disease. I remember him captaining the DC team and doing some occasional commentary on the BBC. Seemed a real gentleman. RIP Paul.

Interesting article in The Times today, looking at why Bath was selected as the first venue.
“The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) pulled a masterstroke in hosting the Europe/Africa Zone Group I event in Bath in February, the first time that Fed Cup action had taken place on British soil in 26 years. That enabled the players to experience the unique atmosphere of this competition at home before the stakes were raised at the Copper Box. “The support we had in Bath was something special, but this weekend tops it,” Keothavong said. “That gave me goosebumps out there.”
Interesting that they also recognise the unique atmosphere, but like DC the powers that be, seem hell bent on destroying it.

I didn't see the Tatishvili match but OMG.:yikes:
On Sunday, the ITF released its list of player fines issued during the first week of Roland Garros. Among those found to have committed on-site offenses included Stefanos Tsitsipas, once each for coaching ($3,000) and unsportsmanlike conduct ($2,000), and Alexander Zverev, for abuse of racquets and equipment ($3,000). However, one decision clearly stood out from the rest.
Anna Tatishvili was penalized her entire first-round prize money, $51,520, as a referee determined that the Georgian born-American did not meet required standards of play in her first-round performance. Tatishvili was defeated by 29th seed Maria Sakkari, 6-0, 6-1, in 55 minutes, and won exactly one third of the total points in the match, 31 of 93.

A British sports scientist who helped the US women’s football team win the World Cup (https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/us-set-standard-for-rest-of-world-as-era-of-dominance-continues-dgk2lmlcv)by tailoring their diets around their periods is to help the UK’s female tennis players.
Georgie Bruinvels said the menstrual cycle was still a taboo subject in sport but research showed that it could have a huge impact on performance.
With the help of Judy Murray, the tennis coach and mother of Andy Murray, she has begun talking to the British Fed Cup team and the Women’s Tennis Association about developing tools to tailor training and diet to players’ needs.
......
Her team has now developed a programme to help women tailor their training regimes and diets during different parts of their menstrual cycle to lower the risk of injuries caused by hormone changes.
This might mean doing a longer warm up at certain points of the cycle, she said. Research has also shown that the female body adapts better to strength training in the first half of the cycle than the second. Playing in the heat is also harder for the female body to regulate in the second half of the cycle.
For player’s prone to inflammation, the middle and end of the cycle, when certain hormones drop, mean old injuries can more easily flare up. By reducing the amount of saturated fats in your diet you can also reduce the risk of inflammation.
“Injury risk is affected throughout the cycle,” Dr Bruinvels said.
“Biomechanics change and there is some interesting research at the moment into anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries [in the knee] increasing in the first half of the cycle.
“A change in the looseness of ligaments and neuromuscular firing patterns causes people to land differently or change direction differently. ACL injuries are one of the things that ended [former British No 1] Anne Keothavong’s career.
...
Dr Bruinvels said the hormone changes in pregnant and breastfeeding athletes were also not being considered widely enough by coaches and players.
Serena Williams has struggled with knee injuries since giving birth to her daughter in 2017.
“Serena’s hormone levels would have just increased, increased and increased,” Dr Bruinvels said. “I really feel for male coaches because they don’t have that education. I think it’s a problem across the board that there is a lack of education about what is the menstrual cycle.”

Fognini says the new generation of players is boring to watch: "They all have the same gamestyle. They just hit strong. There will never be players like Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray and del Potro again."
I've posted this because it compliments Andy and because I agree. With the exception of Alcaraz who I think is wonderful and Tsitsipas who has a fantastic game but increasingly unlikeable personality I have to agree. Who else really stands out? I'm pretty underwhelmed by the male up and comers at the moment. Even Felix who I thought very talented has bulked up and become a bit of a ball basher. I'm just pleased to have Emma coming up, she's dynamite and will be my number 1 post Andy.
Goes like that though I suppose, men and women's tours tend to be good a different times.
Edit: Having given it a bit more thought:
Players over 25 I'd pay to see:
Andy
Evo
Fed
Stan
Novak
Rafa
Thiem
Goffin
Fognini
Gasquet
Simon
Monf
Tsonga
Kei
Dimitrov
Kohlschreiber
Del Po
Diego S
Cam
Kevin Anderson
Kyrgios .....and more I can't think of right now.
Players under 25 I'd pay to see:
Alcaraz
Denis S
Musetti
(Tsitsipas is too annoying).
There's just no comparison.

"The most obvious hurdle is the altitude," Smith explained during BBC Sounds' coverage of the Australian Open.
"The altitude brings pressureless balls [that should be easier to control], which our players never play with. The ball is flying so much faster through the air so you have the need to adapt.
"Then you have the physiological elements as well, so it's how people are going to react to the thinner air."
