So is the next tie Easter weekend? Is it Weds to Sat again? No idea how Fed Cup works I’m afraid ... but if I’m not working I will try and come if it’s a home tie *Birmingham please*

The next tie is over Easter weekend. Saturday, 20th and Sunday, 21st April. Two singles matches on the Saturday and two singles plus a doubles on the Sunday. It will be us versus one other team. We will know on Tuesday around 12 noon (being streamed live on Fed Cup website) whether GB is home or away. As it is only a couple of months away, I imagine if it is home tie it won't be too long after that the venue is announced.

Apparently, the two most probable venues are Bolton and the CopperBox. Lots of hotels in those areas have been booked in the last 24hrs, and everywhere will be pretty busy Easter wkend. I've provisionally booked the Premier Inn Bolton (the one by the arena), and would drive if it's at the CopperBox.

Today’s Daily Telegraph says:

“...if they get a home tie, it will be staged at London’s Copper Box Arena”. The same article gives the dates as “...April 19 -21...”. I thought it was 20-21 April?

As themass15 said, there is an event listed at the Copper Box on Sunday, 20 April.

Well if it's at the Copper Box I could get there really easily. Didn't renew my British Tennis membership as gave up hope of being able to get to any DC ties in the forseeable future. Hopefully I'd still be able to get tickets somewhere if it does happen.

Teresa

I could get there and back from home each day, fairly easily. A couple of hours each way, but much cheaper than London accommodation. I assume with only two teams there won’t be really late nights?

I'm hoping it's Japan - not just because it would definitely be at home, I'd like a JoKo/Osaka encounter. Jo leads 4-0 but always pretty close battles, so should be another fun one.

Surely they will want a bigger venue. The popularity of last weekend proves there's a market for it and the LTA will want to maximise bums on seats for financial reasons, so I think you'll be safe from the leaking roof Stell

Yes not too bad price at the Britannia - I assume they get a lot of business customers with being at Canary Wharf but with it being a bank holiday weekend the demand is lower. I've booked the Fri, Sat & Sun nights to be on the safe side, especially with the trains being messed up.

Good news it is another home tie (though personally won't be going if London as will probably be there in summer) though not that likely for alternatives mentioned either. However sure I can enjoy it on Tv! whilst Kazakhstan could be a tough team they are closely matched in the rankings and GB should have the advantage with the crowd support.

if it is London and people are worried about high costs, don't forget, it's much cheaper to stay outside the city and commute in. When we know the venue, it'll be easier to pick a possible place in suburbs.

The London Lions are playing there on the Sunday, perhaps this could happen as well as Fed Cup?

Lovely to see so many of you last week! Hope it's London, in which case I hope to see lots of you again. My back won't cope with the train journey to Bolton, so I really hope it's not there - at least with the Glasgow ties, it was possible to get a sleeper up there!

Agreed Steven. Bolton is about 3hours 40 minutes from London by train and the fares are ridiculously expensive.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to meet you but I remember you from the Greg Rusedski fan forum. Hopefully, we will meet in London.

I, vaguely, remember going to Bolton for a Davis Cup tie. At the time, my aunt and uncle lived there but for some reason I couldn't stay with them. I think I was allowed to leave the car in a nearby car park. Was this the one that had no toilets inside? I remember we all had to stand outside, in the cold weather, to use the portaloo.

Caro
13-02-2019, 13:50
Might consider going to this but am not happy about London. Don't get me wrong, I love London and it's easy to get to by train for me .... BUT .... London already has Wimbledon, Queens and the WTF. Surely to goodness somewhere else deserves some tennis! Wales for example never gets anything. And for those of us who don't live in or near London, it is very expensive to stay! .... Ok, rant over ;)

I do get that it is very short notice and not many venues will be available ... and Bolton was awful (not so much the arena, that was ok) so maybe it is the lesser of 2 evils if those really are the only options.

RosieBear
13-02-2019, 14:35
Totally agree with you, Caro. London is commutable for me so by far the cheapest and easiest option, but it should be shared, the GB team should play in all parts of GB.

I agree that these things should be shared about, and London is a doddle for us Anna. However, with the short notice, and the fact that 3 of the team actually live in the South (with Harriet being from London) I see what they are trying to do if it is the Copper Box. Joko & Hev both live near Eastbourne - which is not practical in April (brrr, and rain!) Katie B lives in Leicester and we know that Katie S is from Bristol.

If we go by DC "rules" (OK i know not rules, but bear with me) - with the DC other than Queens as it fit with the timescales, the other home ties were in Glasgow. The Scottish connection of the Murrays and Leon, so perhaps by going for London they are playing on the Southern connections?
- don't shout at me - I know that Wales and Ireland have not had any ties of any of these events and it would be great to go there too. I also think that the Easter Weekend is a factor to where the LTA can host this

Personally I've never believed that a player's home town should have any bearing on venue choice. They are professionals, they can get on with it and play any where! Fans are the folk that matter most in venue selection, imo. (p.s I'd never shout at you, Glenys the menace!) :)

Yep, and if you go on the London Lions fixtures page it now shows that their match on the 21st April is being played at UEL Sportsdock. I'm 99.9% sure the Fed Cup will be at the Copper Box. The visiting team is Cheshire Phoenix. Imagine being one of their fans and traveling down from Cheshire, booking a convenient hotel only to have the event moved 10 miles away. Just booked the Park Hotel in Ilford and got it a lot cheaper than the asking price, thanks to my three free nights. I stayed there, last year, for the athletics and it's only a ten minute walk or a short bus ride to the train station. The train station is only about four stops to Stratford. I was offered a ticket to go and look round the Houses of Parliament, during my stay, but I didn't know what time the tennis will start. So, I opted for next Saturday instead.

Hi Sally, Just to confirm that I would appreciate 2 tickets for Jane & myself, for BOTH the Saturday & Sunday. Please can you let us know ASAP if we will def get tickets through the AMFF, as we need to book travel & accommodation ASAP, due to it being Easter weekend. Speaking of which, where is everyone staying??
Thanks :-)

Woo hoo! So happy you're going. We are booked at the Britannia International at Canary Wharf Sat and Sun nights. Looks like Teresa has a booking she's cancelling the post above mine but it doesn't include the Sunday night.

Hi Sally, just to confirm, one ticket for both days please - if it's possible to get on an aisle, that would be a huge help, but I realise that can't be guaranteed. Looking forward to seeing you again.

Really looking forward to seeing you again Steven! It's been forever!

Excellent that it’s Copper Box. As well as the Tennis, I am looking forward to a nose around the Olympic Park. Anyone else fancy a swim in the Olympic Pool?

Wow! Wouldn't that be amazing? I swim regularly and would love it!

Booked in the Brittannia International at Canary Wharf ... is that the same one a number of others have booked?

It would be fun to go with someone else. It’s about £5 a session.

It says on the LTA Web pages that the Sunday start time is 12.00. Slightly later on the Saturday at 1.30.
Glad I decided to travel down on the Friday. Rushing down on the Saturday morning didn't appeal especially with Euston being closed

Oh right, I thought it would be later. 'Mid afternoon' sounds later to me. That's better for the tennis and dinner but not as good for swimming Teresa as it won't give us much time to get back to hotel before the tennis.

I really could do with knowing the definite confirmed start time as if it is definitely 12pm on Sunday, I will probably go home Sunday after the tennis. I hope we find out pretty soon, although could get an open return on the train anyway with it being a weekend / bank holiday.

I was quite surprised too Caro. Early/mid afternoon to me seemed to indicate 2pm'ish!
They've obviously learned from the experiences at Bath!
Earlier on Sunday is sensible because there may be a doubles match to play.

If it’s 12pm on Sunday, then there should be plenty of time for swimming after breakfast. We can just take swimming kit with us. A towel and costume shouldn’t take up much space?

We would have loved to have come to this. Cheered on the team and caught up with AMFF - sadly the building work and internal stuff following the fire has not even started yet. So we don’t know when it will begin and when it will finish or what we will be up to. I thought we’d be finished by then 3 weeks ago. But other than 1500 thousand surveyors scratching their heads we don’t seem to have made much progress :( :( Have a wonderful time all luckily enough to go and shout for me and Kev x

Depends how close to the hotel it is. It’s not walking distance is it? If I’m going I would want to do a proper swim so can’t go too soon after breakfast and it’s the meal the night before so I won’t want to be up at the crack of dawn. Will still bring my cossie though and see what happens. I’ve never been in a 50m pool. I usually swim in a small (22m) one.

It’s certainly not walking distance, (well not for me - about 6km). I think it’s a single tube journey though. I think my local pool is 25m.

Sorry to hear that John was ill and I hope he's feeling a lot better. I've not heard from anyone else to say they had a problem so hope it was a one off case?

To be honest, I thought the food was pretty good compared to some DC ties we've been to (and way better than FC at Bath). They had 'healthy' options (either Chicken or Felafel Salads which were nice), Ciabatta and wraps and were doing a deal which meant we paid £5.50 for salad and a 500ml soft drink which really isn't bad pricing. There were the usual suspects on offer i.e. hot dogs, hamburgers and Nachos with Cheese + lots of 'snacks' and sweets. So there was some choice and actually better than some ATP500's and Masters I've been too e.g. Paris Masters offer only a choice of ham or cheese baguette, absolutely nothing else!.

I still think it's silly to remove the caps off the bottles ...
