Hard luck Andy. The match was in your hands......

11-11-2011, 16:28
Mmm... well congratulations on the best run of your career Andy. Next time you play Berdych be a tad more merciless and focused.
But... so be it... frankly you might have a bit more time to get 100% OK in London because I am not sure you were 100% today.

:grrr:
Well played Berdy but I can't see him beating Fedex in the Semi's.
Andy fought to the end - and perhaps having the weekend at home and some days of relaxation will benefit him ahead of the WTF. He probably needs to rest and recover from those niggly injuries too.
Bad Luck Andy!!!!..........Home,Rest & Regroup!!!!!!
Let's hope Berdy keeps that momentum against Fed:)
sophie900607
11-11-2011, 16:33
Well that's it, it's been a nice run from Andy while it lasted. He's had millions of chances in this set, should have converted his BPs.
Would have prefered losing a bit less dramatical way when I first get to see him after a long time... Now I'm absolutely sure I cannot watch him, I think I've only seen one match of his Asian swing and look how great results he's had! ;)
Maybe it's better that he's not playing Roger tmrw, would be extremely exhausted.
Andy, darling, have some rest before London and arrive there 100% healthy and hungry for glory!
Disappointing - Andy just never seems to play his best tennis in Paris. Berdych was the deserved winner.
sophie900607
11-11-2011, 16:35
Oh and of course congrats to Thomas, he's played some awesome tennis in some parts of the match. Should be an interesting one against RF, though he'll be tired.
I really do not want Fed to win Bercy!!!!!:grrr::halo:(that's me praying!):)
anyone know what this does for the rankings?
Lets not be too hard on him. He has done us proud over the last couple of months and we had got used to him winning. This was bound to happen sooner or later, better now than in London.

My tennistv stream died just before the end, and before I found another it was all over.
I'm quite glad he won't have to play Federer, after that exhausting match. But once again - First. Serve. %.
For me, it wasn't the fact that Andy lost, but the way he lost. He had so many chances to win that match, but just couldn't hit enough balls in court. 43 unforced errors is a shocking stat by his standards. Disappointed.
KnightOwl
11-11-2011, 16:45
Gutted - but I suspect that, on balance, Berdych deserved the match - flashes of brilliance from Andy, but overall he was a bit flat.
good match, andy needed to win that in the tiebreak after set 2.
andy looked exhausted, and thomas that bit more resolute.
would be good to see them in same pool at the O2, andy needs to find a way to play an aggressive opponent.
LC the fan
11-11-2011, 16:51
Think it was a great match for the neutrals - Berdych definitely earned it in the end.
I cant get too upset because I think Andy looked pretty done-in out there at the end - he can now go home and get himself rested up for the O2. A match with Fed after this afternoon would not have been ideal and the extra 2 days will be a great benefit if he does have a few physical niggles.
He certainly wasn't at his beautiful best out there at times
Come-on Andy - you can win in London your really can do it this year :trophy:
Aww. What a shame. Really was hoping he could pull it off.
But he seemed below par from the first point. Maybe it was the niggle in his arm that meant the first serve went awol - whilst his leg clearly isn't 100%
But looking on the bright side, at least he has some time now to get some TLC rather than be exhausted and have to face Federer tomorrow.
Andy
Just got home. Sorry to see the news - didn't expect that. What happened, did he just run out of steam?
Golden Lady
11-11-2011, 17:30
Just got home. Sorry to see the news - didn't expect that. What happened, did he just run out of steam?
He wasn't playing at his best Linda, not enough first serves and Andy said himself (info from Neil Harman tweet) that he hadn't hit his backhand so poorly for a while. Just not his day today and so a great run comes to an end.
I'm sure he'll be revitalised for the O2 and I think the time he now has to rest and prepare will be of great benefit.
Positives from this:
* Andy didn't play his best but still made Berdych, who was playing out of his skin, work hard for the win.
* I would have hated to see an exhausted Andy losing easily to Fed tomorrow - would not be good for his confidence going into WTF.
* Andy doesn't drop any points.
* He gets to go home and rest and, hopefully, cure those niggles before the O2.
So, I agree with LC - I'm not as gutted about this loss as I might have been and I'm pretty sure Andy isn't either. Fed played poorly by his standards in his match and would have probably lost to Fish if he had gone through instead of Pico. If the final is between Fed and Tsonga, I'm optimistic that Jo-Willy will win with the partisan Paris crowd behind him.
Thanks GL.
I'm getting to see a bit of the match now as they are showing the third set on tennistv at the moment.
Alis, I would like to thank your post, but the thanks button is missing from it

Still disappointed with the result as hoped Andy would at least have got to the semis (though he may not have been in the best shape if he had squeaked out the win) but of course we can put in into perspective with the fine run Andy has had lately and I'm sure that ideally he would have wanted to show his best form at the O2 rather than Paris.

Clearly Andy had some slight injury problems, I would rather see him go out today than tomorrow when playing Fed, as this would not give the true showing of how Andy is a better player than Fed, and would crush Andy's confidence, which has been at a high level all during the Asia swing.
darn it , I had to go out after the 2nd set , thought Andy would get the 3rd :crying:

[bad word]
Sounds as if it was great match. Some needed R&R for Andy now and I hope he gets his revenge at the O2. I seem to remember that Berdych likes slower courts - the conditions were damp and heavy when he beat Andy at the French. Hoping for Berdy in the final at Bercy!
Real shame about the loss. Sounded like a real battle. Hopefully Andy gets home, rests up and tends to those niggles before the WTF. Can't wait for that, still think Andy will do really well there.

Was out this afternoon visiting a friend, so only managed to play the recording about 6. Watched the first set and half of the second then I got a phone call. Long story short, then watched The Jury so only recently finished watching. Disappointed but not upset. It was a battle and Berdych had to really fight all the way. Hope Andy can now rest, get rid of any niggling injuries and prepare well for the 02. Andy seemed to smile a lot during the match. ps You don't get as tense when you watch it in bursts.

Well I'm disappointed but not in Andy - only that I won't be able to watch any more of him this weekend. Berdych hit 62 unforced errors and the commies were again commenting on the speed (or lack thereof) of the courts and saying it's almost impossible to hit winners. I suspect Andy was hampered in some way by his bottom and his elbow - at least he knew the difference! - and at times on his forehand it looked like he was trying to hit a lump of lead rather than a tennis ball. Still thought Andy's tennis was the more inspired of the 2, Berdych just had more of the luck IMHO.
62 UE by one player and 43 by the other? Sounds like an absolutely ghastly match!
KnightOwl

Well, it was three sets - three long sets at that - so it wasn't all ghastly, but I get your point!
Pretty gutted Andy's awesome run has come to an end but rather here than at O2 and rather against Berdych than against Federer (where niggles may cause a struggle) IMO. I didn't to watch it but followed it nerve-wrackingly on twitter. Sounds like Andy was not at his best and let a few things get to him. Wasn't impressed with the whole changing of the balls when down from Berdych as they would have been poor for Andy too and of course new balls change the speed and everything of a serve!
All in all it gives Andy a change to rest, heal those niggles and hopefully get revenge at the world tour finals

I agree entirely.

Gutted for Andy, but you can't win every match, and the score shows how closely fought it was. Just hoping that Andy's injuries and confidence recover in time for London. I want Andy to do really well this year (as in winning Barclays). I'd like him to be seeded 3rd at the Aussie Open this time around.
Yeah feel for Andy. Berdych has done this kind of thing before against other players when not having his way. Andy did look a bit defensive with his game yesterday and I think he had played down niggles after the Roddick match. never mind Andy. London calling.

Poor Andy looked so disappointed in the post match presser. He really looked like he'd been crying. Sometimes you just want to climb in the TV and give him a hug. I hope this loss is one of those heavily-disguised blessings, allowing him to rest and recoup for London, which he's been saying all along is his priority. I also hope that Mr Berdych doesn't let success go to his head and that he gives Fed the treatment today! Come on Berdy!
ps Has Berdy acquired a new super-model type lady friend? I thought his steady was a rather sweet girly tennis player. The woman they were showing yesterday was heavily made-up and a bit scary.
pps Sorry. Just curious! :shamed:

If she a player, maybe it is the same girl, but with added Max Factor. Thanks Galagirl!

His long time girlfriend was Lucie Safarova - a tennis player also from the Czeck Republic - comes over as a very sweet girl. Seemingly, they split up fairly recently and she has been playing better since!

The tennistv commentators gave the girl's correct name a few times but I can't remember. I think it was Esther (or something like that) but haven't a clue about the surname.

Not been on in a while due to work and what not but I wanted to get on here and post my two cents about the match. How Andy actually lost that match is the amazing thing. He just had SO many chances and the TB he fought back so well but fluffed the easy forehand. Anyway he looks in good shape, no injuries lingering so I fully expect Andy to be in the Final in the 02.
I think Andy might be secretly quite pleased to be out before the weekend and have the extra few days to recuperate - think Rafa at Queens!

I think you could be right, after all he was putting a huge emphasis on the fact he wanted matches before the 02 not that he really wanted to win Paris.

One of the Sky commies said she's a model - shallow or what!

Yeah, she looked like a model-type. Blond, yadda yadda. And she looked about 16 too.

Yep, clearly a must have accessory!
Definitely a trophy girlfriend!

Ick, she must be desperate.
Well Lucie helped her country to the Fed Cup last weekend - she must be a very happy bunny!

Lucie lost both her rubbers, however.
She did lose in the final but she won several matches in the earlier stages so without doubt helped the Czeck Republic to the trophy.

Good point. Good job the three other Czech players all won their rubbers.

Looking back after a couple of days, the most significant fact going forward is unfortunately Berdych has now won the last three encounters with Andy. That really needs rectifying next time before the tennis world start to think Andy is Berdy's bunnie.
I think it's more to do with what Andy thinks about it than with what the tennis world thinks about it!
