I am slightly disappointed that Jack Draper did not get a main draw wildcard. Especially when James Ward gets one nearly every year yet does not deliver. I am happy for Paul Jubb and Jay Clarke though.

I'm quite surprised that Baggy has been given a MDWC ... and since they've still got 4 MDWCs places available who knows what might change?

Jack DRAPER (GBR)

I am happy with Marcos Baghdatis getting a wildcard. I have never forgotten the way he behaved in a late running match again AM, He could have screwed things up for AM very easily, by slowing up, chucking a fake MTO in, and forced the match into the next day. However he behaved with integrity and in a rare sporting manner.

He was also the only player to take a set off AM in London 2012.

He is also an older statesman of the sport. Let him have his day. It might be his last at Wimbledon. Leyton Hewitt has benefited from a few.

100% agree. WC should have gone to Jack Draper. 17 yrs old, exciting prospect for British tennis. Ludicrous imo to give it MB - I like him well enough, but his day is well past. (That he didn't sabotage things for Andy should just be considered normal/expected form).

Likely to be Wednesday or Thursday if play up to speed. According to Daily Mail will be not be on Centre or No.1, so probably No.2 or No.3. I would guess 2 because it is an all ticket court and if it was 3, there will be queues round the block

Certainly some interesting matches early on, Nadal could face Kygrios in the 2nd round (if Aussie gets past Thompson) and other openers to look out for include Thiem v Querrey, Djokovic v Kohlschreiber,Cilic v Mannarino, Tsonga v Tomic and Anderson v Herbert. First time for a while of course no speculation about Andy in singles (even if he ended up not playing last year), the Murray Brothers possibly could face each other in 3rd Round of the Doubles, though Herbert/Andy would likely face 6th seeds Mektic/Skugor in 2nd Round. https://www.atptour.com/en/news/djokovic-nadal-federer-wimbledon-2019-singles-draw

As far as Brits go Edumund has Munar and likely Verdasco in 2nd round, Evans has Delbonis with winner facing 18th seed Basilashvili or Ward if he can upset him. Norrie faces Istomin and success would be lead to clash with Nishikori assuming goes to form.

Some 1st round news ... British first!
Heather Watson won 7'5, 6'4 and Kyle Edmund won 6'4, 6'4, 6'4.

MENS DRAW
Tsitsipas[7] (lost to Fabbiano) and A.Zverev[6] (lost to Vesely) both went out first round, as did Dimitrov (lost to Moutet) and Monfils (retired after a fall) who lost to fellow Frenchman Humbert. Andys' erstwhile doubles partner Pierre-Hugues Herbert lost in 3 sets to KAnderson, giving the Frenchman a lot more time to practice with Muzzah!

Djokovic[1] beat Kohlschreiber after a minor wobble in the opening game. And despite wins from a few younger chaps the march of the 'older' guard continued with wins for Wawrinka, Verdasco, Tipsarevic, Chardy, Karlovic, Goffin, Darcis, Pella, Cuevas and Haase. Honourable mention is made for Feliciano Lopez who has picked up where he left off on 23rd June and won his first round match here in straight sets over Giron.

On Canada Day FelixAA[19] beat fellow Canadian Vasek Pospisil, and Milos Raonic came through against Gunneswaran. RoastLambs' cheers can be heard from across the pond ...
:jitterbug:

LADIES SINGLES
Story of the day is Coco Gauff defeating Venus Williams in straight sets and remaining as cool as a cucumber on her Grand Slam debut. One to watch, she was signed up by Federers' management company when she was only 13 years old - they can do my Lottery for me every week if they like!
;)

The ladies seeds tended to fare better than their male counterparts with one notable exception - Naomi Osaka[2] who lost in straight sets to Putinseva. Other seeds who lost were [10]Sabalenka,[16]Vondrousova and [29]Kasatkina.

There were wins for Simona Halep[7], Caro Woz[14], Sevastova[12], Svitolina[8], Pliskova[3], Sakkari[31], Keys[17], Martic[24], Kontaveit[20], Kenin[27], Hsieh[28] and Vika Azarenka.

Wow! Did you all enjoy the first day today!! There was so much going on at the same time I could scarcely keep up. I may be wrong, but for me that was one of the most eventful first days in a while. I'm disappointed about Stef, and to a lesser extent Sascha. Whilst Fabbiano played a great match today, I feel he may not be able to sustain that form and will not go deep which may leave the tourney the poorer for not having the likes of Stef around. We shall see. Looking forward to Dan tomorrow. More juggling to do as Wardy is playing at the same time as Dan. Enjoy day 2 everybody!

Sally, thanks for OOP for Wed, as Murray is not listed on either show court do you think this means he is playing his first match Thursday?
I have absolutely no idea. It could be Thursday, it could be Wednesday on an outside court.
And it might be a match not initially listed on any court until later on the day of play.
There are often 3 or 4 such matches, often doubles, that get allocated as spaces allow.

If Jubb v Sousa turns up on the red button I'll let you know. I expect it will be on when a match currently being televised finishes.

Bit of a learning curve for Paul Jubb, loses the first set 0-6 to Sousa.

Querrey puts out Thiem, disappointing but suppose not total surprise. A bit of a shock it was 6-0 in the 4th though (a lot going on today, caught some of it )

I really really wanted Domi to win this one. Very disappointed.

Yes I noticed that too. Wondered what it was. Great to be able to watch Jubb. He put up a good fight. I was delighted for him when he managed to grab a set. He did well as I don't think he has ever gone beyond 3 sets in a match. Great experience for him.

One should win cos their seeding but failed: Thiem, Zverev and Tsitsipas. Didn’t expect them lose but did expect possible tough match depending their opponent play.

In the first set Nick was ranting a bit about Nadal's timekeeing (probably partly due to being outplayed though Rafa does take too long at times),however more focused in 2nd playing some amazing tennis- good contest at the moment. However pretty poor game puts it back on serve, 3-4. However Kygrios regrouped with great returning and held to take the set 6-3.

So when it comes down to it, Nick doesn't have the courage to play the match his way and instead resorts to playing the way he thinks he'll be judged least badly. Typical. And to try and injure a fellow professional, regardless of how much money or GS titles Rafa has, is just plain disrespectful.

Didn't that quote just say it all "look at his bank account..." Jealousy or what! I don't watch tennis to see trailer trash like that ! There are so many decent players. I may have the odd whinge about the others, particularly when they seemed to beat Andy and I didn't want them too, but I have respect for so many of them and am entertained by their matches. All their characters make the tennis world go round but this idiot doesn't belong in it imo.

Think or say what you like about Nick, but the Nick-Rafa match was a corker. The standard of tennis was amazing, and I'll guarantee that anyone with only a passing interest in tennis would have been hooked on that one. Apparently the viewing figures were around 3.7 million. That can't be bad for tennis! The needle between the 2 players made it the match it was. Remember how the McEnroe-Connors dislike of each other gave us such high quality matches? I think we need matches when there is needle between players. Spices things up! The match yesterday was a lot more than just the behaviour of Nick. Nadal's determination to win this match, fuelled by the needle, raised the level to new heights and you only had to look at his (Nadal's) excessive celebrations to see that. I like Nick and I'm not trying to defend him, some of his behaviour is reprehensible, but would you rather watch the fireworks this match produced or the match between 2 servebots like Raonic and Opelka? I really hope there will be more Nick-Rafa matches in the future. Sorry! Had to get that off my chest. By the way, I didn't watch that match after Andy came on court, though I was reluctant to leave it. The pull of Andy much too strong! But I did see a replay of the end of it. They walked off court together.

From a break down was all plain sailing for Djokovic as goes through 6-4,6-0,6-2. More competitive with Bautista Agut and Pella, pegged back after going 2 sets up but Roberto took it 6-3 in 4th. Federer lost the first to Nishikori 6-4, but has just gone break up in 2nd.

I expect this is just me, but is anyone else finding this week a bit if an anti-climax after all the spills and thrills of the 1st week? It's all a bit more predictable now and matches are not so even. Seems to me it's pretty much down to one of the usual, or so called big three, to win. It's merely a question of which one? Delighted for RBA that he made it to the SF anyway.

I feel the same Pat. Today's men's matches have been very predictable (only the Pella v RBA wasn't a fairly obvious foregone conclusion). Kei made a good start against Fed but when Fed came back and won the 2nd set in double quick time the writing was on the wall. I'm rooting for Rafa now, it's been a long time since he won Wimby so would prefer him most out of the Big Three. On the women's side I would probably prefer Halep to win ( though I'm still mad at her for the way she stuck up for Nastase's horrid behaviour at the Fed Cup last year).
As last year it seems less exciting now there is no Andy to cheer, but at least we got to see him this year with some entertaining matches

I would like Rafa to win too. I also think he is totally fired up and is all out to win, even more than ever. After all, does he not have a point to prove? (Thinking of his chagrin at being seeded #3). But to win he'll have to beat the other 2. Well, there are only 3 players out there according to the media, are there not?;) It would be some achievement to defeat both Fed and Djok, and if he did, he would fully deserve it. Here's hoping we get some belters of matches now.

Sure this thread, perhaps folk too engrossed in it. yes enjoying the drama, very tight in that first set but Fed's attack got him through the TB. Nadal got break early in 2nd and stormed ahead though Roger's level dipped, great 3rd-looked like Rafa might come back at one stage but Fed got job done. Think Nadal got another gear though amd wonder if Roger can sustain this performance.

Nadal got break early in 2nd and stormed ahead though Roger's level dipped, great 3rd-looked like Rafa might come back at one stage but Fed got job done. Think Nadal got another gear though amd wonder if Roger can sustain this performance.
Well three holds away now! Wonder if Rafa can break back.
If Roger were to win this and the final think it will be his 21 slam at his 21st Wimbledon!!!

Some tension at the end but Nadal could not take advantage, overall though Federer was playing at a very high level and the better player today. A bit surprising he was getting the better of Rafa in some of the longer rallies. Very enjoyable contest, even if we did not get a 5th set.

His attitude has become so obvious the commentators have started mentioning it. During the Fed-Nadal match Bouncy asked Boris about how Djoko felt about not being loved as much as the other two and perhaps surprisingly Boris admitted they had talked about it when he was coaching Djoko. He did claim Djoko doesn't care any more. Oh Boris, I think he does care, very much

Exciting tennis in the 1st, though Federer lost the initiative in tht TB really. Did not expect Djokovic to fall away so much, 3rd should be competitive again though! Even at the end I didn't mind which one won. I was just glad to see a great final as they can sometimes be a let down after all the build up. All in all a very enjoyable Wimbledon. My highlights were

Andy being back in any capacity was just a joy, especially as he seemed to be have a ball (pardon the pun)
Two lovely days attending in person. Fantastic weather and nice to bump into some familiar Forum faces while I was there
Dan vs Sousa. Gutted Dan lost but a great match to enjoy and cheer on a Brit
Both singles finals a complete contrast in that one was so short and the other so long, but each in their own way was brilliant. I've even forgiven Halep for her remarks supporting Nasty a few years ago. She was a truly deserving champion and absolutely charming in the interviews. As for Djoko and Fed, well one of them had to win but thanks for giving us a true treat of a final

In reading some of the press reports of the men's final there were quite a few comments about the hostility of the crowd to Djokovic. On TV it probably wasn't quite so noticeable but even on the small screen I detected some of it. I'm not a fan of his (or Fed either)as most on here will know but I do find the attitude of some of the crowd very unedifying. You can still respect the skill and ability of a player even if you aren't keen on their on-court persona. I really dislike the thought of Djokovic being given the verbal aggro he apparently received. I don't recall this happening at all when he played Andy in the 2013 final - yes of course the Centre Court crowd was massively pro-Andy but I really don't remember it being anti-Djokovic and the there is a subtle distinction between the two things I think.

Which leaves me pondering what the difference between 2013 and 2019 was? Is it an indication of a general growing lack of respect for other people or was it because Djoko was playing Federer and the crowd just responded differently than they did in the match against Andy? Whichever it was, both are unpalatable options. Tennis has always been a sport that shows respect to opponents. Even in highly charged DC matches the opposing fans are respectful of each other and the opposing players.I hope this occasion was a one-off as it slightly taints what was otherwise a fantastic sporting occasion

The difference between Djokovic playing Andy, and playing Federer is that when he is playing Andy, the crowd is obsessed, but not to a deranged extent. When he is playing Federer on the other hand, he is not merely playing the perceived goat, but the perceived god. Even during the Olympic Final in 2012, there was still a goodly proportion of the audience that wanted Federer to win.

Those of us who support Andy, are still in contact with reality, those who support Federer are like members of a cult.

Teresa, you so often voice what I think too! The "cult" mentality of the fans and the way they are nasty to the other player is probably the main reason I decided to root for Novak. Federer may well be the GOAT but the others are extremely close and there's no logic in their elevation of him to the extent it occurs. I've seen them in person be rude to the sweetest politest Kei fans and of course there was the time at the 02 when Sasha was reduced to tears when he won in the semi. [Incidentally, I was at the 2012 Olympics when Roger was scheduled to be on the court I was sitting on (watching the British women at the time) and his fans were arriving en masse ready to support in the next match. There were certainly a lot of them - many more than had been present for the Williams sisters for example whom I also saw that day. ] They are extremely annoying! I want Novak or Rafa to overtake Roger in the wins just for this very reason.

Did anyone watch Novak's post-match interview btw? In it he says "when they shout Roger, I hear Novak". He has trained himself to hear it he says! Pretty amazing.

Also I think the Fed cult as you all call it is becoming rather threatened by Djokovic because they know he's probably going to be the GOAT when all is done and dusted. I certainly think Djokovic will become the GOAT. He has 6 years on Federer and he said he plans on playing until his late 30s too. I can see him winning the gold medal in singles next year - which is really all that's missing on his resume/cv. And if he does that and I think he will he will surpass Federer on that achievement as well.

I don't actually like either of them although I recognise that they are both amazing players and the match was a fantastic match. So, why was I supporting Fed? I find that difficult to analyse. Possibly because I thought he might retire if he won or possibly because I thought it would be awesome for a 37, nearly 38 year old, to win the title but mostly I think it was because, although I don't like Fed, I trust him to be straight but I have never been sure about Djoko. That may be very unfair of me but his use of the hyperbaric chamber and his defence of his countrymen involved in drugs bans leaves me very uneasy. It would also have been a fairytale for Fed to win his last Major at Wimbledon - he had so many chances and I don't think he will get that again. Having said that, I agree that Fed fans en masse are an absolute nightmare!

Of course it did. Are you kidding me? I've seen SO many players fold against Federer when it counted. So many. But not Djokovic. He could easily have lost yet he did not. He kept plugging away. Massive credit should go to him. Yes, I agree that Fed was WAY more consistent - I can't explain wth happened in sets 2 and 4 and also Fed is usually great at winning tiebreakers, so the fact Djokovic took THREE from him is, again, just incredible.

No I'm not kidding. I think Fed understandably showed signs of nerves and Djoko was able to capitalise. From what I heard from the commies, Fed's record in tie breakers against Djoko is not great which probably added to the pressure. It was his to lose and he did.

RosieBear

Novak has been in Fed's head for a while. It's not just because of Fed's mps at "that" notorious US open final but feel it got worse after then. Remember when Fed played like a demon in the Wimbo semi in 2015 and blew poor Andy away in straights by serving 85% first serves and being an all round blitzing machine, but then came up against Novak in the final and his stats, inc his first serve % which is in his own hands, plummeted. Grrrr. I see it as 50-50 - would expect a player as composed as Fed to seal the deal, but then Novak has certainly earnt his fearsome reputation. This year's final will add another chapter to their dynamic. Maybe Fed will get the monkey off his back and get a significant win over Novak before he retires, maybe in Tokyo as they vie for the gold medal they both long for, but tend to think Novak is going to remain a bogeyman for Fed.

But Fed was so steady. He didn't seem nervous to me at all. I actually think that Djokovic stepped up to the plate and then some - when he needed, i.e. the 3rd and final sets. Also, winning one tb might be a fluke but all THREE?

The fact that Djoko DID NOT lose his mettle was stunning - to me anyway. It's been almost a week and I'm still marvelling at it all, how he was able to come back from that crucial break down. AND WIN!

Also, re: your point about pressure on Federer. Well, I think the pressure on Djoko is really crazy too - he had the crowd against him and he desperately wants to beat Fed's record. And I think he'll do it too - as long as he stays healthy and fit.
