Some really wild errors from Osaka in a bit of a nervy display (did not look that comfortable on the grass) . Putinseva played well though and had won their two previous matches.

Some 1st round news ... British first!
Heather Watson won 7'5, 6'4.

LADIES SINGLES
Story of the day is Coco Gauff defeating Venus Williams in straight sets and remaining as cool as a cucumber on her Grand Slam debut. One to watch, she was signed up by Federers' management company when she was only 13 years old - they can do my Lottery for me every week if they like!
;)

The ladies seeds tended to fare better than their male counterparts with one notable exception - Naomi Osaka[2] who lost in straight sets to Putinseva. Other seeds who lost were [10]Sabalenka,[16]Vondrousova and [29]Kasatkina.

There were wins for Simona Halep[7], Caro Woz[14], Sevastova[12], Svitolina[8], Pliskova[3], Sakkari[31], Keys[17], Martic[24], Kontaveit[20], Kenin[27], Hsieh[28] and Vika Azarenka.

This is the first time I've seen Coco play and I thought she had a very interesting and different game - lots of slices, dices and loopy loos. Not what I expected. And she didn't make any noise too which was SO NICE! BUT she coulda cracked a few smiles. However, kudos to her.

In the immediate post-match interview she said she was telling herself to stay calm before every point ... so she might not have wanted to risk a smile. But she did smile a lot after she won!

Had been some speculation over Kvitova's fitness(missed Fench and grass warm ups ) but a comfortable enough win over Jabeur(who done well at Eastbourne),well done! Serena breaks to go through 6-2, 7-5 (though originally served for match at 5-3).

Sigh. Genie. WTH happened to her career???

Good win for Harriet tho'.

Looking forward to Coco's next match to see if she can follow it up. I really like her game.

I only got to see Jo's first set then they cut to Sharapova. No just NO!!! Anyway, glad Maria is out so I don't have to suffer that again. Pfft.

Why do they do that swapping channel thing? They did it the day before with Kyle. I was recording BBC 1 and 2 in anticipation but they moved him onto red button so I missed it.

Cracking match on court 2, Lauren Davis (strapped like a mummy) won the 2nd set and is now 3-1 up in the 3rd after breaking defending Champion Angie Kerber in the 3rd game. Just just broken again ... so Davis leads 2-6, 6-2, 4-1.

JAMES4578
04-07-2019, 16:46
Davis got the win 6-1 in the 3rd, an bog upset as defending champion goes out-feel pity for Angie but well played Lauren! Serena lost the first set to Juvan 6-2, but taken 2nd by same scoreline. Johanna Konta was impressive in despatching Sinikova 6-3,6-4 -will now meet 9th seed Sloane Stephens and has good record but Stephens won early matches easily. Good win for Harriet, maybe should have got in straights but decisive in 3rd.

Waiting for Andy and Serena so watching Hercog and Gauff. I also watched Gauff's second match and parts of her first match.
Watching the end of the second set tiebreak so not sure if Guaff will lose or it goes to a third set but....
Her expressions during this match reminded me why 15-year olds are limited to, what, ten tournaments per year.
It is not the ability to win that limits players at this age, but the effects of their losses, and learning how to mentally cope with losses.
And now she has won the second set but, still, I do not like the strain on her face - that was her first ever top WTA level tiebreak. Hope she grows from these experiences and it is positive.

Gauff and Hercog match is turning out to be very dramatic. Gauff, from being almost down and out has saved match points and we are now in a third set. Just means Andy is delayed!!

Gauff v Hercog in the 3rd set.

JAMES4578
05-07-2019, 18:21
Yes have been watching as Gauff was outplayed for much of the match but shown real fighting spiirit to come back form 5-2 down, though Hercog did tighten up somewhat in sight of victory. Certainly some dramatic points!

Rosalind

Watching too. Amazingly talented young lady. Hopefully she will be able to cope with this.

JAMES4578
05-07-2019, 19:35
Certainly entertaining , though a fair bit of cagey play. Gauff finally gets the win 7-5 in the 3rd after being pegged back and a real prospect, though important she does not have too many demands placed on her at this point. Halep up next which will be tougher but if she is in form would not rule anything out .Still feel a bit for Hercog though.

As expected Harriet Dart finding it tough on centre,Ash Barty wins 6-1,6-1. Tbh was a bit surprised this was favoured over Konta/stephens which is 2nd on Court 1 soon,Serena has just beaten Julia Georges 6-3,6-4.

Another upset, the top seed and French champion Ash Barty goes down to Alison Riske 3-6,6-2,6-3. Riske was inspired but bit of a disappointing display from Barty as she failed to stem the tide from the middle of the 2nd set, Riske took advantage of the too many 2nd serves and was the more aggressive player in the crucial stages. so we are denied the Williams/Barty quarter which many were expecting.

JAMES4578
11-07-2019, 15:38
Quick matches and had hoped for more (at least in first semi) but two players in form. The first two games with Halep and Svitolina featured long rallies and took 20 minutes but Simona pretty much dominated thereafter-Elina done a bit better in the 2nd but was not best day,Halep though has much more experience in the latter stages of slams. Serena was far too strong for Barbora Strycova, talk about hip injury but likely did not make a great deal of difference for the czech.

Today's centre court programme also included 1 Men's Doubles semi (which was a 3 hour match) which I think is always the case. Would like to think Johanna Konta would have provided more of a test had she played better in the quarter when expectations would not be the same, though can't be sure. Men's and Women's Doubles Final are scheduled for Saturday.

Women's Doubles final now postponed till tomrrow with Men's Doubles still ongoing, will follow Men's Final on centre whilst Mixed has been moved to Court 1.

Alis
13-07-2019, 19:53
I feel sorry for the Mixed finalists being shunted to Court 1 - it's always been a perk of the Mixed Final that it is the last match to be played on Centre. Couldn't they have put the Ladies Doubles on before the Men's Singles? I wouldn't mind betting that if Andy and Serena had qualified for the final they would have still been playing on Centre Court!

JAMES4578
13-07-2019, 20:05
Indeed, so used to the Mixed being given pime time at the end of the Championships, suppose they don't want to start that early on the show courts. Centre court starts at 2 but it's 1 for Court 1. Think highly unlikely they would have put Andy/Serena on Court 1 had they been in final.

RoastLamb
13-07-2019, 20:34
That's awful for the mixed. Yes, I don't see why they can't put the women's final on at 11 a.m. Come on Wimbly!!! I bet we don't get to see it on telly or online either. Bummer!

As for the ladies' match, I am really happy for Simona. Great match and fantastic win. She was so cute at the interview and in her presser. I think Serena was hurt because she didn't play a top ranked player until the final. But also it really irritates me that she only seems to play the slams now. Whereas the other players all have to slog it out at the lesser tournaments all year long. So, I'm glad she lost.

And I'm glad Simona beat her in such a vigorous way, FOUR breaks. Her defense is just phenomenal. And I love how she thanked Darren Cahill for all his help. I watched the ESPN feed and he's one of their commies, and Brad Gilbert told him to tell Simona to stand back on Serena's serve like Kerber did last year, and I guess he did tell her as she mentioned it in her ESPN interview.
