[/URL]Andy kicks off his campaign to win the ATP World Tour Final against David Ferrer.

The indomitable Spaniard has kept a hold on the #5 Ranking throughout this year and is known for not giving up running, chasing, fighting or hitting balls back into court when least expected and he has great stamina - hence his occasional nickname of Duracell Dave!

Andy leads their [U]H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=F401) 5-3 with a run of 4 wins from 2010 here in the RR stage at the WTF's last year and including the AO Semi, Tokyo Semi and Shanghai Final 7-5, 6-4.

Hopefully Andy will be rested and raring to go.

The match is on Monday 21st November not before 2.00pm UK time and will be shown live on BBC2 as well as being available on Radio 5 Live the BBC interactive website.

Good Luck Muzzah!!!

LOL, I actually was planning to include that but ran out of space!! :D I wanted to make the text fairly large so that it might show up on TV! ;)

@ VamosVixs - wow, I feel very honoured!! Please do feel free to use it as a desktop wallpaper - I know it's a bit of a funny request, but would you have been able to do a "print screen" of your desktop so I can see the image in use? No worries whatsoever if not, but I'd have loved to see it! :D

I'm feeling very honoured and flattered by these kind comments - thanks so much everyone! :)

If he can hold now it will make a BIG difference. Frankly this reminds me of when Andy beat Rafa in Rotterdam when Rafa was injured, but still had to work so hard. He can push the ball around at two thirds his normal speed and still beat Daveed.
C'mon Andy!

david1610
21-11-2011, 15:31
Well the bad news is Andy is carrying an injury. The good news is he has accepted it and is playing around it as well he can rather than "fighting" it. Win or lose now depends on the injury. I wonder if he will tank all Ferrer's service games from now on and just go for holding serve?
Anyway, no point in beating him up if he is lacklustre. At least we know why now. Let's hope he just hits the ball in and in and in .... and it does the trick.
C'mon Andy!

Proud of you as always for not just chucking the match as many would. And giving the crowd a match. Ferrer has adjusted now and is hitting the ball further away from Andy's "comfort" zone... oh well. So be it. Let's hope he can serve well and .... well every game still counts remember if he recovers for the other two matches so still worth fighting for games. C'mon Andy!

No recriminations whatsoever but praise for playing when others would not. I am upset for Andy but not upset at the result. Just proud!
Now let's hope Andy can get fit and give himself a chance in the other two matches.

It is not a question of focus. It was a question of being well below par and still giving it a go.

He seemed to be struggling from the off and I'm sure it was affecting his serve as well.
If he was in pain I'm surprised he did as well as that.

All credit to David Ferrer - he played well, hung in when he was down a break or more and realised Andy was in difficulties and might not be playing his best.

Ah well, onwards ... the tourney isn't over yet so the Semi's placings are still wide open.

Do you hear the commies - doom and gloom - on this showing he'll never win a major! I hope if Andy is really injured he will withdraw from the rest of the tournament and not make his injury worse and give more fuel to the fire of his denegrators.

It'll be interesting to hear Andy's press conference to see how much the injury was hindering him. Such a flat performance from him, I wonder if nerves were a factor too today?

Oh for goodness sake, Marcus Buckland. YES he lost in straight sets, with a single break score line.
It's not like he got double bagelled.

I could throw my slippers at the TV, except my feet are cold!

Andy lost :crying:

He wasn't serving well, he has a sore hip and had treatment at the end of the first set .... not a good day at the office

Commiserations to Andy but Ferrer looked like a man on a mission from the off.

Hope Andy is all right and will win his other 2 matches but it will be tough.

Let's face it - our boy just didn't turn up today. No first serve, very few decent shots.
The hip must be giving him some trouble - he had very little mobility in getting everything in place for his shots and his serve just wan't there.
Reckon that could be the end for him this year unless he can put the problem right - Djoko and Berdie must be rubbing their hands

He couldn't play well - he had a hip injury and had a medical timeout at the end of the first set.
We hoped Andy could get better - and he broke Ferrer's serve right at the start of the opening set - but it seemed as though the injury was affecting his service action and ability to run down shots. Ferrer has said in his interview that he realised something was wrong with Andy during the first set.
Such a shame this happened when he was so optimistic of doing well at the O2.

Just finished watching this - had to record it due to hospital appointment - very disappointing!

You could see Andy was trying his best, but he looked very flat to me in the first set, and I wasn't too surprised that he had to have an injury timeout - his movement really didn't seem to be quite right throughout that set. He then got a break, and did look like he was moving a bit better, but he allowed Ferrer back in, and couldn't quite get himself back in the match - some great shots from time to time, but not enough for Ferrer playing at that level.

Tricky now - this was the opponent I felt he had the best chance against - it all hinges on how the injury goes, I guess....

You could tell he had a problem just from the unforced injury count. Normally, even when Andy loses, he is noted for having very few unforced errors - today the count was astronomical.

I hope it is something that can improve quickly because I fear he cannot beat Djokovic or Berdych playing like that.

So do I hope Andy will improve as he definitely won't beat Djokovic and Berdych playing as he did today. I'm sure Andy will be very disappointed that he played so poorly today in front of his home crowd.

Worse than going home early from the tournament will be the loss of his #3 ranking to the Fed.:grrr:

I hope Andy does what's right for his body. In his present condition he's not going to win the event anyway, and there's little point forcing his body through two more matches. It's so important that he's in good shape for the off-season leading up to the AO. Such a shame this has happened now.

I only saw the first four games of the match, at lunchtime at work, and it looked like it would be a good battle. Kept checking livescore for the rest of the match. Sorry that Andy lost and more sorry to hear that he's injured - I didn't realise that until I came to this thread. Hope it's nothing serious and that he's soon fighting fit.

pabbers
21-11-2011, 19:36
Sincerely hope he pulls out - this is an injury he's been carrying for a number of days since Paris and he hasn't been able to practice properly seemingly. I'd rather see him out of this and able to rest and prepare fully for Oz than for him to battle on just for his fans and risk another year without an Oz slam. If he doesn't win Oz, I'd rather it wasn't because he wasn't fit. Anyway he knows best and we'll find out tomorrow but if he's considering pulling out, it can't be trivial. This is definitely going to be the year of the last man standing. Rafa looked dreadful yesterday bless him - I don't know how he played on.

JAMES4578
21-11-2011, 19:47
Gutting Andy couldn't produce consistently enough to withstand a battling Ferrer but he was clearly hampered and either way he has an uphill battle. He's said he'll decide if he'll continue tomorrow. Though I have tickets for his next scheduled matches obviously he must consider his best interests and he wouldn't be letting anyone down if he has to pull out.

Linda
21-11-2011, 20:04
Hopefully Andy will not be too badly injured. It was still a very close match - and Ferrer has reached the final of the WTF before, so it's not as though he was playing against a complete numpty, Andy would only have to be slightly off his game for Ferru to take advantage.

Alis
21-11-2011, 20:11

 So sorry for Andy. It's tough for so many top athletes towards the end of the season after all the
punishing the body has to take. Rafa, Nole and others have also been nursing injuries and I feel for them too.

Feeling gutted for Andy. Would love to see him play here but at the same time he shouldn't risk his body further if he has an injury. Not a great way to end the year but if it means he'll be fit and ready for Australia then it's the best thing to do in the long run.

21-11-2011, 23:19
Feel really gutted for Andy! The injury must have been pretty bad if he said that had it not been the world tour finals he would have pulled out! :(

Gut feeling is that Andy will pull out to make sure he is ok for AO barring sme amazing work from AI. Of course if he does continue I will be happy and cheering him on!

Was a very hard match to watch! Andy had his chances yes but with that injury it seemed to make him a bit unsure and tentative and his serve just was very poor probably because of the movement. Pity as if he had been able to serve well and been able to hit that backhand better he could have won. I have no doubt that a fit Andy would have won out there today. I had a pretty bad feeling about this when I asked Petch about this and he looked a bit solemn and said something along the lines of not great or something

Get better soon Andy!

I was there and it was obvious that Andy was under par physically from the beginning. The medical time-out only confirmed my worst fears. Andy is not the sort of guy to call out the trainer for something trivial. Could see that he wasn't serving like he can though there were some good ones and one brilliant second. His backhand was misfiring and he looked a bit miserable though he did try to smile occasionally. David played well and took advantage of Andy's lack of mobility around the court. I was bitterly disappointed for Andy and I hope he's sensible and withdraws if he is not completely recovered. I felt for him as he walked off.:crying::sad:
