Announcement (http://www.brisbaneinternational.com.au/2011/11/andy-murray-coming-to-brisbane#more-6245) of Andy's participation.
Andy Murray will start his 2012 season at the Brisbane International in January.
The world No.3 and three-time Grand Slam finalist will join a host of tennis stars in what is shaping up to be the strongest Brisbane International line-up to date.
The Scotsman, who confirmed his attendance today, said he was looking forward to starting his year in Queensland.
“I love coming to Australia, but I’ve never had the opportunity to visit Queensland before,” Murray said.
“I’ve heard only good things about the Brisbane International tournament, so I am looking forward to competing in January.
“With a quality field it is the perfect way to begin my Australian campaign.”

why would andy want to play in boiling hot, toad ridden, queensland when he can get decent opposition in the hopman cup?
why would andy want to play in boiling hot, toad ridden, queensland when he can get decent opposition in the hopman cup?
Not sure Perth is much cooler ;)
Anyway he said last week it was a problem of "time-frame"/commitment. And I was trying to explain it with my own words but doing a mess in the between, so here Andy's own words on the matter:
Just looking ahead to Australia. It was announced today you're playing in Brisbane. Can you tell us what your thinking was behind that, and in particular having reached the Australian Open final the last two years without playing in an ATP event why you've changed for this year.
ANDY MURRAY: Well, now it becomes irrelevant. Basically the thinking was the Hopman Cup wanted an answer on whether I was going to play quite a number of weeks ago [I think they announced all the teams mid October, so I suppose that was their deadline]. I wasn't ready to commit to anything then because I was having a few niggles. I didn't know how I was going to be feeling at the end of the season, like after here and obviously after Paris.
So I wanted to have a bit more time. They didn't have that time.
Brisbane wanted me to play, and I explained my situation to them and said that, you know, ideally I would like to play that week but it depends on how my body is, when I start training, so forth. They understood that, respected that. That was why I decided to play there.
But now because the last two weeks it's pretty much been rest for me, you know, I should be fine to play there start of the year.
Hopman Cup seems to be getting above itself considering it's a nothing tournament really!

Yay that good for me cos Hopman Cup is AWFUL for me to do FTM cos website is rubbish and info get updated way too late and it not easy tournament to follow.
At least ATP much easier to do. This gonna be easy start year for me do FTM for change. :)

Didn't Andy get to the Final of Abu Dhabi in 2009 - and then decided to change it up in 2010 by playing with Laura in The Hopman Cup, which guaranteed 6 matches, some doubles practice, some light-hearted moments, and matches in Australian heat as his preparation for Melborne.
Yes Andy won the event, beating Fed in the semis and Nadal in the final. However, I think he now wishes to Spend more time in Australia, though of course he is playing Brisbane this time instead.

Yes, indeed he is!
On first reading, I thought of tennis matches, but then realised you were talking about matchsticks! :shamed:
The first tennis tournament after Xmas is Abu Dhabi (exho) starting on 29th December - taking part are Nole, Rafa, Roger, Ferru, Tsonga & Monfils. What a lineup! I wonder why Andy doesn't do this one? The organisers have obviously got plenty of money.
The Tournament is Doha, Qatar EXXON/MOBIL OPEN and prize money is $1,024,000 whereas Brisban is only $422,300. Roger won it last year and Andy 3 years ago I think.

Personally I think it's a good thing Andy doesn't do this any more. It's bad enough getting used to 3 time zones in a month (London, Miami and then Brisbane/Sydney), it's quite enough for him. To be honest, really only playing there to line pockets. Doesn't add anything in my opinion
Sounds like a nice Christmas. I am off to my sons next Thursday, not back home until after the New Year..
Hope you can put your feet up. Will you be around on here?

Hopman Cup seems to be getting above itself considering it's a nothing tournament really!
I did like watching it as a quite refreshing tournament to watch and got quite a good vibe about it. Mixed doubles with Laura was good fun, though her injury would have put pay to that. I wonder if/who they would have tried to replace her with.
Reading Andy's thoughts I can now see why he has decided not to play there. Trying to think if the bigger time difference will be a good or bad thing, thinking it will be bad lol
JAMES4578

I've always enjoyed the Hopman Cup and it has regularly attracted top players since its inception. Probably some of them have found it a bit more relaxed whilst still playing some good matches, though in essence it is a glorified exhibition. In the circumstances think it was right for Andy to make a change this year though.

Well at least Brisbane is nearer the time zone for Melbourne than Perth is, so that is a plus.

And of course not just the prize money, but the appearance fees. That is why Abu Dhabi, Doha and Dubai probably (diplomatic insertion of aforesaid adverb) get so many top players and why I wish Andy would take the decision to forego Dubai and head over to the US and Memphis (relatively up the road from Miami) after the AO - take Kim with you! - rather than go all the way from AO to Europe - wrong way to Dubai - back to Europe and then US for Indian Wells and Miami.

Mixed feelings. I can understand Andy but I can also understand the tournament. And it's 2012 and as stated before on this site, suddenly the prospect of a Gold Medal in Mixed Doubles next year makes the Hopman Cup very attractive. The organizers presumably wanted Andy but did not want to lose other attractions which, while not as attractive as Laura and Andy, are more attractive than a scratch pairing at the last minute.
I also think the relaxed air of the Hopman Cup provided Andy with good match practice, a competitive atmosphere, but no "baggage" or extra media pressure going in to AO.
Let's see what future years bring.
I wonder if Laura and Heather are considering mixed doubles next year, and if they feel Andy is "out of bounds" as he will be concentrating on the singles, but might be interested in teaming up with one of our increasingly successful doubles players.
In other words, let's start the pairings predictions :)
Well at least Brisbane is nearer the time zone for Melbourne than Perth is, so that is a plus.
I think there's only one hour difference between Brisbane and Melbourne. And for sure it's nearer than Perth :)
Mixed feelings. I can understand Andy but I can also understand the tournament.
I can def see both sides. If, for whatever reason, Andy had to skip Brisbane (or another regular tournament), the TD would maybe not be the happiest man in the world, but he would still have other players he can rely on (maybe not another top-4, but usually another top-10 and a couple of top-20 and so on) and Andy knows that if he had to withdraw last minute, he can do it without causing much trouble. If Andy had to skip HC, Hopman Cup can't "substitute" GB with another country, so instead of Andy-Laura they would end up with another GBR player (in the best scenario, if he is not signed in another tournament, J Ward), and you can see that with only 8 men (2 of them already not among the top, since China and Denmark are in the field) there is a huge difference. So of course HC needs a stronger commitment than Brisbane, and of course Andy was right not to commit to it if he felt there was a chance he wasn't ready to play there. :)
Maybe Laura didn't want to commit.
Is she recovered from her injury now?

Hi guys, first post on the new forum.
I'm afraid it doesn't look like we'll be able to watch Andy in Brisbane. I couldn't find Brisbane on any of the betting site schedules or on TennisTV.com so I emailed the tournament and they say there will be no livestreams.
There is live TV coverage in Australia on channel 7Two, but that doesn't broadcast live on the internet.
Looks like it will be livescores only.
Hi batz, good to see you on here. If a tournament is televised anywhere, there will very likely be a stream available that will only appear once the match is starting - but if it's not on any of the betting sites or tennistv, then it will probably be a very poor one.
Hi Linda - That's a good point. I was hoping that the TV coverage might somehow find its way on to the net but don't want to get my hopes up. I guess we'll have an idea on Sunday/Monday - if streams appear on those days then we should be all good.

Excuse double post.... I expect they will do the doubles draw later tonight so we will at least know by then! If it is Andy's first tournament after a groin strain, and first of the year, and unless somebody like Ross is in town and needs a big points favour, I would imagine Andy would be in the mindset of "Let's get started on the path towards the AO" and would doubt he would want to play doubles, unless he specifically wanted as much acclimatisation or extra volleying practice or similar...

http://www.couriermail.com.au/sport/tennis/long-road-for-hurting-murray/story-fn793zm5-1226233602612 This does not sound good at all for Andy :'(
Let's hope the writer is trying to make a mountain out of a molehill - this is his usual knee trouble, not a new injury. It's obviously been troubling him as he's been wearing knee support in practice, and it seems that it needed adjusting during the practice session. But if neither Andy nor Darren Cahill seemed concerned, then hopefully there isn't anything to worry about *fingerscrossed*

Yes, it does not sound like anything new.
Reading between the lines though, I just wonder if Rafa is really for the new season. And even Nole....
Is it because I am following tennis more closely, and so had not noticed before, or do others also think that this might be a year when the effects of last year catch up on the top players early on this year.
I know it is easy to snipe, but Roger may turn out to be the one who knows best how to conserve his body....

Yes but I think one thing is his level of playing and the other is his level of fitness. We are proud of Andy making all the four SFs last year. Wasn't Roger's tally 22 consecutively? Think about the injury niggles our boy gets. That is five and a half years of looking after your body and peaking for the GSs. Quite something really.
But back to the matter in hand. Just looked and still no draw....

I don't normally comment on Andy's appearance but looking at that video, is the T-shirt tight or has Andy done some serious bulking up in the last few weeks. Just the way he was setting himself up to hit the ball suggests more power, or is that wishful thinking?

He does look bigger but the shirt is close-fitting. He just looks fit to me!!!!
As he does most of his fitness work during the off-season (short as it is), it makes sense that he would look fitter now than at other times of the year.
Think it's one of those fits where it touches t-shirts.

Go andyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't normally comment on Andy's appearance but looking at that video, is the T-shirt tight or has Andy done some serious bulking up in the last few weeks. Just the way he was setting himself up to hit the ball suggests more power, or is that wishful thinking?its a compression top he is wearing, they are used by a lot of sportsmen now a days (sadly not as many ladies wear them ;)) thet prevent the build up of lactic acid and keep the muscles warm ETC
Hey guys. Don't forget to enter the competition to commemorate both the new coach and first tournament of the new season here (http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?495-A-New-Year-and-another-chance-to-win-a-T-shirt-signed-by-Andy-Murray!!-Deadline-approx-sunday-noon&p=25252#post25252)

Absolutely mad that all but the Australian Open are on TV channels I haven't got, but delighted that Andy and teammate won. I'm glad he played the doubles first, hoping that will set him up well for his debut in the singles.
Don't you get channel 7two?
If there are no streams for Brisbane, I'll eat my hat.
< 10 hours before the first TV coverage from Brisbane starts and not a sausage on livescorehunter.com - will you be having mash or chips with your bunnet? ;-)
I'll worry about that in 10 hours.
Streams are up on LSH! Happy Daze. Now, only need to check they will work.
Bet365 are streaming it! Woo-hoo!
Sorry for doubting you hawkeye

Certasinly wasn't expecting it to be so emphatic, well done guys!
Looking at the stats, they had 14 BPs and took 4 of them, and saved all four BPs against them. The first service percentage was something like 79%! Of course I do not know what was Andy's and Baggy's part in that, but it certainly seems that the serve/s was/were functioning well, which is good news for the singles.

That was a close one. Does anyone know why Andy and Jamie didn't play doubles together??
That was a close one. Does anyone know why Andy and Jamie didn't play doubles together??
Maybe because Andy finds it tough playing with his brother mentally because he wants to win so much more and for the start of the season that is hard when starting off the singles campaign. Maybe because Jamie needs to find a solid partner especially for australian open... could be anything
Tough loss for both Andy and Jamie. Both tough opponents and sounds like a heartbreaker for poor Andy and Baggy. Wish I had got up for that match now especially as apparanently there was a stream for it :(
No bad thing at the end of the day. With Andy playing 3 setters thus far, he could do with a break! Baggy won't be a push over either......and he's got Miles in his corner to dish the info on Andy, if Baggy isn't already aware of all there is to know.

All things considered, I think Brisbane has been a good opening stretch for Andy. He's had two fairly tough matches which is what he needs at this time. Two set walkovers look good but match practice is valuable as long as he keeps healthy.
The doubles will have sharpened up the reflexes too. Pity about the result today, bet he was a bit fed up about it, but they weren't expected to get any further....and they certainly must have put up a good show
Lets just hope it has worn out Baggy a bit more than Andy

Going to be and interesting match between Andy and Bernard Tomic. Bernies game has been compared to Andy's and they have a similar style. I think Andy's experience will win through but it won't be a walkover and Tomic can be a very cool customer. I think bagels and breadsticks will be out but there should be a few kitkats.
BTW The west aussie team will be at their stations. Me on one computer with the livestream and DD (AA) on the other computer giving you the running commentary.
looks like it will be another early start for those in the British Isles. Dolgo and Simon are up first not before 1pm EST. So guessing it will be after 3pm EST before Andy's match starts. So about 1pm our time and 5am GMT. See you then :)
