Halep out of the USO, beaten byQualifier Taylor Townsend.

Taylor Townsend just beat Halep.

Disappointing from Halep even it was tight in the end, though maybe it was not that likely she would match Wimbledon run. Well played Townsend tnough! Kvitova also out 6-4,6-4 to Pethovic (though 6th win out of 10 for Andrea and Petra still has issue with arm), Sloane Stephens in same section lost earlier. Cori Gauff had 2nd 3 set win, beating Babos 6-4 in 3rd , she will now face Osaka.

Excellent match, I don't often watch ladies matches but I was glued to this one, well worth watching on replay!!

Those moments at the net when Naomi beat Coco were the sweetest and most tender I have ever seen in my long number of years watching tennis. Naomi inviting Coco to be part of the interview, how special is that? My heart has just swollen up to bursting point with admiration for both those girls. Both sets of parents must be so proud of them. Such a contrast to the prima donna behaviour of some other players who I will not name.

JAMES4578

Certainly was a nice touch, a grat credit to osaka and both Naomi and Coco seem to be endearing. As far as the match was concerned Osaka had a bit of pressure coming into it but very convincing in the end. Pity Ash Barty has just gone out to Wang 6-2,6-4 but not best day and her opponent was strong on the key poins in the 2nd.

Sallydaisy

Barty is out of the US Open, beaten by Wang 6'2, 6'4.

Sallydaisy
01-09-2019, 20:09
Serena beats Martic 6'3, 6'4.

However, she fell and rolled her ankle after the 3rd game of the 2nd set and had a 3min MTO. Much depends how that recovers before her next match against Wang (who beat Ash Barty earlier today).

DOUBLES
CoCat have just taken the first set 6'3 against experienced pair Peschke/Melichar.

CoCat have a combined age of 32.

Peschke is 44 ... and won the 2011 Wimbledon Ladies Doubles title with Srebotnik.
Melichar is 26 (and won the Wimbledon 2018 Mixed Doubles title)

Sallydaisy

McCoco defeat the 9th seeds Peschke/Melichar to progress to R3 of the USO.
They have only teamed up twice before (in Juniors) and won the USO Junior title in 2018.

Barty is out of the US Open, beaten by Wang 6'2, 6'4.

Such a disappointing match imho. Ash had so many chances. So passive.

Osaka in a spot of bother .....
Bencic breaks on Ashe and will serve for the first set at 6-5 vs Osaka.

And takes it 7'5.

Sallydaisy
02-09-2019, 17:10
Goerges was ahead 7'6 and leading in the 2nd set but lost the plot. Vekic levelled at 7'5 in the 2nd set .. into the 3rd set they go.

Sallydaisy
02-09-2019, 17:38
Osaka serving to stay in the match at 3-5 in the 2nd set.
Bencic has beaten the #1 twice already this season.

The women's final will be an all North-American affair between Serena Williams and Bianca Andreescu after 2 straight sets wins.

JAMES4578
07-09-2019, 13:26
Svitolina should have broken at start, 2 long opening games but Serena took both controlling the first set and 2nd was a procession. A tighter affair with Andreescu and Bencic, was looking lie a 3rd with Bencic 5-2 in 2nd but Canadian won 5 successive games to take it 7-6,7-5. Will need to see if Williams is on A game in final tonight , recent Grand Slam finals she has been below par.

The whole hype and hysteria around Serena is worse than it is around Federer. I'm not sure I can stand it. Wonder if there'll be an outburst this year.

I agree with you about the hype. Not always easy to listen to. I see Alison Hughes is going to umpire the final tonight. Should be ok. Let's hope. If Kerber is correct, Bianca can be a bit of a drama queen too. Haven't seen huge evidence of that myself, but we'll see!

Yes I just hope it's an entertaining match.

Scoreline so far ... Williams served first.

*0-1
0-2* BA held
*1-2 SW on the board
1-3*
*2-3
2-4*
*3-4 Very tough hold for SW
3-5* 1st break chance for SW but she couldn't capitalise.

Sallydaisy
07-09-2019, 21:01
Andreescu constantly gunning for every point; now deuce on SW serve.
A break would give her the first set.

Rosalind

Good match so far. Come on Bianca!

Sallydaisy
07-09-2019, 21:02
First set to Bianca Andreescu 6-3 as SW dumps a 2nd serve into the net.
SW kicked off with a very poor first game, with 2 DFs, which gave BA the advantage from the off.
BA not intimidated by the SW 'history' at all, 21/25 first serves in and making points easily.

Chris Clarey on Twitter:

Serena Williams double faults again on break point and loses the 1st set to Bianca Andreescu 6-3. In the four Grand Slam finals Williams has played since returning from childbirth, she is 0-7 in sets won
What's incredible to me is that Serena HAS MADE 4 GS FINALS since coming back to the tour.

Alis

Andreescu has certainly come out to play. I haven't seen her before and I am seriously impressed - she is not the slightest bit intimidated either by the occasion or by her opponent. Serena, however, seems to be totally hamstringed by nerves. I really hope that she finds her game and makes a match of it.

JAMES4578
07-09-2019, 21:07
Some great play from Bianca and crucially she saved bp at 4-3, having failed to get double break earlier. Cetainly some tentative play from serena has helped her cause though the American was still competing well at times. The Canadian though seems mentally tough.

Sallydaisy
07-09-2019, 21:10
2nd set ... BA serving first.
*1-0 but SW made it tougher
2-* and SW has just lost the game to love, seems unsure of herself altogher.

Apart from the histrionics, last year was very similar - young player not intimidated comes out and plays blindingly. Amazing

Maybe Serena's coach was right when he said that Meghan coming to watch was unlucky!!

Serena breaks, at the 3rd chance, with a lucky net cord dropper.
Momentum shift?
I'm still thinking BA in 3.

The last time Serena Williams came back to win from a set down in a major final was the 2005 Australian Open.

Alis
07-09-2019, 21:20
.....and Serena breaks back so we're back on serve. Hopefully, we'll get a match now.

Alis

Oh dear - Serena broken again and Bianca holds. Serena is absolutely paralysed by nerves ..... it's horrible to see.

JAMES4578
07-09-2019, 21:34
Bianca serving forf title, Serena fallen apart somewhat but still got to give Bianca a lot of credit for her play, though would have been good to see her challenged more.

Sallydaisy

Serena breaks Bianca to peg it back to 2-5 ...
... nerves from the youngster mayhap?
She had Championship point and it went missing.

Serena is still a way off winning this and Bianca has broken the American 3 times already this match.

Sallydaisy

Hold for Serena, 3-5.

Andreescu has a 2nd chance to serve for the Championship.

The crowd are NOT behaving fairly now, interrupting Bianca's serving.

JAMES4578

07-09-2019, 21:51
Williams serving ... *15-0, 15-15, 30-15, 30-30 DF again!
*40-30.
Serena holds for 5-5 after taking the last 4 games to keep herself in this match.

Alis
07-09-2019, 21:51
5-1 to 5-5 ,,,,,,,, what a turnaround!

Sallydaisy
07-09-2019, 21:55
Bianca holds for 6-5 and she's still only 4 points from the trophy.
Serena has to serve to stay in the match OR force a tie-break.

JAMES4578

An error coming up now on Tv, but ok on PC. Bianca does hold for 6-5.

Sallydaisy
07-09-2019, 22:00
Andreescu wins her first Grand Slam!!!
:trophy::trophy::trophy:

6'3, 7'5 over Serena Williams who fought back hard in the 2nd set.
Bianca kept her head at the very end.

JAMES4578
07-09-2019, 22:06
Bianca gets it done in the end and in the circumstances gutsy after being pegged back, though Serena faltered in last game. Hopefully Andreescu can go from strength to strength. :cheer::cheer: Fought well to get back into it but was a bit late really. Still credit for reaching final but has now lost last 4 slam finals all in staight sets. Did get prime back on the Tv before the end.
