Seconds out, Round 2 ... isn't that just wonderful news!!!
:sirandy:
32yr old Andy will play 20yr old Alex de Minaur [7]

The Australian/Spaniard has shot up the rankings with a CH of #24 in March 2019, currently #31. Alex was born in Sydney, at school/tennis in Spain from age 5 to 13, 3 years back in Australia and now spends most of his time in Spain but considers himself 'Australian'. Note that De Minaur is coached by Lleyton Hewitt ... and Adolfo Gutierrez (since he was 9 years old).

He narrowly lost to A.Zverev in a R1 2018 Davis Cup tie and was leading in the 5th set.
He beat Dan Evans earlier this year to win the ATP250 in Nottingham.
So, he knows what he's about on a tennis court and it should be an interesting encounter.

Andy and Alex have not met before so the H2H is 0-0 (https://www.atptour.com/en/players/fedex-head-2-head/andy-murray-vs-alex-de-minaur/MC10/DH58).
The Ozzie has won 2 Titles on the ATP Tour - both of them this year.
Andy has won 45 Titles, none this year.
;)

So, it'll be rather more of a test for Muzzah and hopefully bring out best in both players.
Fair to say de Minaur has a wry sense of humour - he might need it.

Not quite enough puff yet. He did much better than I was expecting. He won a match at tour level, which hasn’t been done in singles with his hip op, and ran the second really close.

Still hate him losing though:-(

Alex had to work for it and there were some brilliant Andy shots. I am ok with him losing this one as I am not sure he is at the stage where he can recover for the next match without a day off.

I really hoped he would take it to end a good news day for me (insurer has finally agreed to repatriate on an air ambulance); not getting too excited until I have a firm date but hopefully it will happen over the next few days, can't wait. Andy did not disappoint us and I know will carry on with his quest. What a warrior! xx

Pity Andy could not hold off Alex in the end but ran him close, producing some great tennis in the process. obviously we would like to see more wins but will take time and this week has been encouraging.

I was really hoping Andy would take it as a perfect end to a good news day for me. My insurer has finally ok'd an air ambulance
for my repatriation so hopefully I'll soon be on my way to good old UK. Andy did not disappoint us and I'm sure will continue in his quest for a full return to singles. What a warrior! x

Was devastated at the end but can take so many positives from this match. He just needs more matches, more confidence in his physical ability and he will get better. He served so well at the beginning and moved very well. I can't imagine what it's like returning to the main tour after surgery and a long absence. I applaud him. Onwards and upwards Andy.

Thank you. not going home home, being taken to a UK hospital, hopefully my local but not necessarily, but just want to be back on uk soil. Next step proper home and my two dogs home from kennels - that will really be a red letter day! x

From @Reem Abulleil .....

Andy Murray: Yesterday was the first time in my entire career that I didn't practice the day before a match. I was tired after the first round and tried to sort of rest and recover as much as possible, so that was something that I have done differently...

Also

Andy Murray: The level in Beijing is a little bit higher in terms of the quality of players, so I'm not playing Top-20, Top-30 tennis right now, I'm probably playing Top-70, Top-60, sort of level. So it's not going to be that easy for me to win matches there.

Wow how quickly it all comes flooding back, that was a :coaster: and a half! I loved it.

Even though Andy didn't have the energy at the end that he had at the beginning and therefore his serve was letting him down, I really thought he would do it. I was gutted when the match finished and I'm happy with that :)

Andy played brilliantly and I hope he is happy too, I'm sure he will be disappointed but he is getting stronger every match :boogie:

Glad to hear things are looking up, Clancy.
Just watched this and did not see round 1.
First impression was that was "our Andy" back - the difference between that and the previous tournament he played is chalk and cheese. Perhaps ran out of energy a bit at the end but this was a great match for Andy to bring out his repertoire of shots. Sad in a way he lost but seeing him play at close to his level is so encouraging and more important than the result!

Late to this but I was so encouraged by what I saw. Comebacks are always gradual, just want to see progress and I certainly did. Felt the falling away at end of 3rd was as psychological as it was physical - he has to believe he's ready to win again, just as he did when he came back from back surgery. Andy had plenty of frustrating losses back in 2014 so turned to the smaller tournaments to gradually rebuild confidence in closing out matches. He got there and I'm hopeful he will again.

From @DavidLawTennis

"Regardless of what happens from here in this match (he leads 6-4, 2-6, 2-1), that Andy Murray is sticking in against roadrunner Alex De Minaur after 2 hours in 28 degree heat and humidity this soon into his comeback with a metal bit in his hip, is absolutely bloody extraordinary."

I have to agree. Was hugely encouraged by the match, and pleased to read that Andy was too (have posted on newspaper thread). Definitely looking good for Andy (and us)
