I thought this had been started but couldn't find it .... we've just acquired a cat called Bubbles - she's an outside cat (for catching mice and other assorted beasties which she's apparently very good at). She was dropped off about 20 minutes ago, and I haven't seen her since  hope she comes back for food after she's explored a bit!

We'll have to find her first :rolling: ..... She did reappear close to the house this afternoon and Mr HFW managed to coax her down to have some food so at least she knows that we'll be feeding her. Minnie went out to see if she could find her but no sign - I'll put her food in the porch and leave the door open all evening and she can please herself if she comes in there - so long as she doesn't interfere with the bunny
Hopefully she'll be there in the morning for her breakfast!

Oh dear lol. Hope she pop up time to time.
Is her old owner nearby? I've always shut new cats in an outhouse for 2-3 weeks before letting them out.

Her old owner brought her here - but their home is about 3-4 miles away cross country. I think the fact she was still about this afternoon was encouraging - but if she takes off, there's not much we can do about it! I'd have shut her in somewhere but her old owner took her out of the cat box and put her down ....

Update on Bubbles ..... she turned up for breakfast yesterday morning which was great. Left her munching her food in the porch while Barley bunny had his breakfast .... came back out to find her showing much more interest in the bunny than her food  .... so she's no longer permitted in the porch and the bunny has been so traumatised by the whole experience (and who knows when I've been out of the house maybe Bubbles has been peeking through the window at hime ) that this morning when I shouted for Bubbles to come for her breakfast, he was thumping his foot sounding the alarm and she wasn't anywhere to be seen :rolling: :rolling:
Silly bunny!

Oh poor wee bunny!!! Cats aren't interested in bunnies though, are they? Is it a really wee bunny? Maybe Bubbles is mistaking it for a unusually fat mouse with unusually big ears?
hfwardhouse
30-11-2011, 17:15
Oh she was very interested in him  :sofa: .... I'm sure if she got in there with him, she'd be delighted to have a munch :crying: .... he's not that wee, and he' put up a pretty good fight but I still think she'd win
So she's not allowed in the porch! Simples.
Cats aren't interested in bunnies? Ours has been known to catch a few wild ones in the summer if mice are scarce.

Right, that cat's gotta go! Anyone want a cat for 12 months?
You just need to make sure Barley's hutch is secure and you'll be fine. We used to have a guinea pig in an outside hutch and the cats could lie for hours watching him.
Either that or make sure you season him well and use the hutch for kindling.

He's in an indoor hutch in the porch which is pretty secure but does have a wee door on the front that opens which if she set her mind to it, I reckon she'd be able to force open .... her biggest problem would be balancing on top of his cage but I don't think that would cause her too much difficulty .... like I say, she's banned from the porch .... and as it's plastic and metal we'd have a hard job using it for kindling :fingersear:

Get the feeling you don't like them much? :rolling: My favourite pets are rabbits and guinea pigs.
We get cats lying in wait to catch bunnies all the time in my Dad's garden. Had to rescue an injured bunny earlier this year. But they tend to go for baby and young bunnies rather than the fully grown ones.

Cat's are very mischievous. Mr HFW parked the car in one of the sheds overnight because it was blowing a gale and with lots of trees round about he was a bit concerned one might land on the car ..... he retrieved it this morning complete with new decorations of pussy cat paw prints all over the windscreen and bonnet  :red devil: :rolling:

Reminds me of something similar earlier this year ... I'd gone to put rubbish in trash bins in my Mum's garage and made a couple of trips leaving the rear door propped open. Locked it up and headed off back to my own home. When I phoned her a couple of days later I got a right earful about how there were cat paw marks all over the car - not to mention the fright she got when a freaked out cat shot past her as soon as the door was opened!
:rolling:
I really like cats but can't have pets at the flats where I live ... and the dead parrot is still lodging with friends 'cos I've no room him and his castiron stand.

:rolling: cat's are chancers - they'll nip indoors first opportunity they get .... that'll teach it ;) ... Bubbles did sneak into the house when I was trying to feed her the first morning - but as she's no longer permitted in the porch, she won't get in unless someone leaves the doors open ....

That's unfortunately something you just learn to get used to with cats, and you have to remember it's just nature. I struggled with that aspect when Dave first suggested we get cats, but as we were both working then, a dog was not possible, so I said ok, and I wouldn't be without them now for anything!
I still tend to ask Dave to deal with the occasional mouse or bird we get presented with, though!

I just want to see Bubbles .... she hasn't been for her food today  .... have been round all the neighbours and no one's seen her so I'm just hoping that she's found herself a large pheasant and is chomping her way through that ....
She'll turn up later looking like she was never away. That's what one of ours used to do.

So we're dogsitting for a week. So far, so good. She's a cross between a bichon and a cocker spaniel and is adorable (name is Maddie). Doesn't bark much, likes to run after a tennis ball and seems to like the kids a lot. I get to take her for a walkie tomorrow morning. I hope I don't lose her. That happened once with my neighbour's yorkshire terrier, it ran away and was never seen again.
We have friends with a Bichon and our kids are desperate for us to get one. I have been really nice about it and told them that if they can find one that's trained to work sheep we will buy it.
Oh dear! Hope that Yorkie found a good home.
You'll need to keep all your tennis balls under lock and key! Dantie loves them and can always sniff them out.

It would appear that Bubbles has defected .... apparently a neighbour heard an announcement on the local radio station that a black and white cat had been found in Wardhouse .... hmm, I wonder who that is  - little monkey that she is .... haven't been able to get hold of anyone there today so no idea who has her at the moment but I'll phone them tomorrow first thing and hopefully we'll get to the bottom of it and I can go and pick her up .... whether we persuade her to stay here is another matter ...

I think you'll have to find somewhere to shut her in for a few days ...
When we moved out here 23yrs ago we didn't let ours outside for a week; it gave her chance to 'scent' out the house and make it 'her' territory. She was a right scaredy so and so though; when we finally opened the back door she took one sniff of the autumn air (September) and headed back to the sofa.

That'd be ok if she was a house cat .... but she's meant to be an outside cat .... and I'm allergic so she's not allowed in .... but apparently she's spent the last 2 days being pampered at a neighbour's house ... having let herself in the catflap and devouring the lamb they'd left out for the dinner (although I have to say that was pretty daft as they've cat of their own  .... anyways, I'm heading off to pick her up and we'll just have to see what happens .... If you get a dog of your own it might be an idea to get one that'll race off any excess food ... or a 'thin' breed that will like fine if fattened up!!!
My ex's cat liked fruit cake. We discovered this one Boxing Day morning when we found lots of bits of marzipan and white icing over the work top and a very round bellied moggy!
My moggy, many years ago, would just about kill for melon skin!

The latest on the Bubbles saga .... so I go to pick her up from her temporary lodging at lunchtime to find she's gone out .... she went out at this time yesterday and didn't come back till 10.30 pm .... this could run and run :rolling:
She's returning to her owner (if we ever get her back) - they've decided to take her back to the old house meantime and hopefully the new owners (they're exchanging contracts on Friday) will take over feeding her. Only problem I can see is that she likes people so may not want to stay there with the house empty!
Of course her temporary lodgings would like to keep her too .... looks like our responsibility is over :yahoo:

We'll see. The hubby doesn't seem to mind her and that's the main thing. I like all the walking, good exercise for me. Except that I had a bit of trouble controlling the length of the leash and she nearly went under a van. She went into the compost bin and ate the garbage this afternoon. Really hope she doesn't get sick.
Oh, Dantie doesn't spit anything out. She gulps down the olives. She's very partial to raw mushrooms too. In fact she's very handy if you spill any food on the floor 'cos she's straight over to hoover it up. Or for eating anything we don't fancy. I bought some smoked salmon in the Co-Op one day, and it was disgusting, really fatty - it was like eating wax. But Dantie ate it all.

 I'd even posted on here. Had completely forgotten about the thread must admit. I do have a weird tale to tell though. On the 15th September when supergramps was very poorly something strange happened. One of our neighbours has a grey cat, had it years and for all the years it won't come near me. I'll talk to it when it visits our garden but it just runs away. If it's at the front it completely ignores me and won't come near me. Around 10 0o'clock on Friday 15th was seeing Anna out to her car. The grey cat walked up the drive into the house. I was not only surprised but shocked. We both came back in as it was at the top of the stairs. I went up and found it in our bedroom. Gently I shooed it out and then it went down the stairs and into the room where Alan was where it went and lay under his bed. It took a while for me to quietly encourage it to leave. Eventually it came out, walked into the hall and out of the front door. Very strange.

This is so heartwarming...
'Woman who stayed with her violent partner for the sake of her beloved dog breaks down as she comes face-to-face with the stranger who took him in so she could finally leave'

Did anyone else see the interview? It was so moving - Frank is an utter legend, helping them both start a new, happy life together. I would love to do fostering for the Freedom Project but my own dogs wouldn't be the most welcoming hosts :-/
.....it might suit someone who likes dogs, but doesn't neccesarily want the full time commitment of having their own. (maybe of interest, Mo? x)
It's quite astonishing how intuitive animals are. Your story is strange, SG, but it doesn't really surprise me. I'm sure your neighbour's cat was saying goodbye to Alan.
At the beginning of WWI my Mum's father had his wooden hulled fishing boat and crew requisitioned by the Ministry of War for mine sweeping duties. One evening their dog Flossie went down to the beach, entered the sea and was never seen again. A few days later the family got word that their Dad was posted missing, believed drowned, the presumption being that the boat had hit a mine.
Wow - that really is spooky, anor.
