View Full Version : Davis Cup - Madrid - who is going

Just thought I would start this thread as we can’t post on the closed thread.

It’s 18th -24th November not September.
I’m not going myself but if anyone is thinking of doing so, it will be helpful to have somewhere to discuss plans.

It looks like there’s a group of Murraynators going and also Stirling Uni group.
I feel bad not supporting the team after so many years of going to every DC tie possible but it just doesn’t feel right to go to this, being as I was sooo against it.
Everyone is different of course and those who want to go should not be lambasted for it. When November comes around I will probably be cursing myself for cutting off my nose to spite my face! :crying: :big grin:

That was me put September ... thankfully another mod has edited the thread title now!

Couldn't go even if I wanted to as doesn't fit in with work. Even though I couldn't always do the real DC around work - I did have more likelihood of making it. And like Caro come November I'll be watching it and wishing I could be there .

If it's a success this year, I might be tempted in 2020 as it's a big Birthday for me around that time.

Personally won't be going this year or any other. No intention of either organising ad hoc travel/acc (at extortinate prices) if GB progresses, or spending 3 days in Madrid in November if they don't. Ordinary people/fans trampled over yet again. I don't feel bad about not supporting - it's not like any players spoke up for fans. If others feel differently and are going, I hope they have a nice time.

Linda

I'm boycotting it.

Teresa

It’s not my scene now. The contempt shown to the fans, means we don’t owe them any loyalty at all.

Definitely not going either (would only consider any home ties in new set up and not even completely sure about that) doubt I'll miss not being in Madrid- too expensive for what it is (transformed out of all recognition).

I feel the same. RR ticket prices are actually reasonable but it’s the principle for me. Hadn’t thought about the players not speaking up for the fans but that’s true. It’s just all so sad. I miss the real DC so much

I saw this on Twitter from Leon Smith I know he is employed by the LTA but I do feel a bit let down by him. I must admit I would quite like a break in November but the consensus of opinion is to boycott the event

“I must admit I would quite like a break in November but the consensus of opinion is to boycott the event”

I think people should do what they want to do. I don’t think boycotting it will make a blind bit of difference. If they didn’t listen before hand, they won’t listen now. I won’t go because I only really went to Support AM, and I do think they have betrayed the fans. Rightly or wrongly Kyle doesn’t do anything for me, and I wouldn’t want to spend money to see him. I woukd rather do Fed Cup. However, if you want to go, then go. You can report back.

RosieBear
05-04-2019, 12:33
I agree with both Hawkeye and Teresa - money talks and only unsold seats will change minds, but equally people should do whatever they want. I'm team boycott all the way, but have no issue with those who (want to) go.

Linda

Of course one could always go to Madrid and hold a protest outside.

05-04-2019, 14:04
I agree with Hawkeye and RB that the only thing that would make them change their minds is unsold seats. It would have been great if fans would have boycotted in their masses. I’m resolved to boycott and if not enough people do the same to make a difference then so be it. I will be happy to not line their pockets myself.

I’m not going to have problems with anyone who wants to go and I’ll probably be sad not to be part of it when people share their stories and photos but I’m willing to pay that price. Everyone’s choices are their own. KevD feels the same so we are both sitting this one out. I wish the nations who didn’t support it would have pulled their teams to be honest. That could have made a difference.

Very much agree with the posts about money talking. It's the only thing the people who pushed the change through understand. I am boycotting, not just in person but I also won't watch on TV. Not heard anything about which broadcaster is going to show it but as I've always believed the new format is predicated on selling TV rights I won't support that either. I do feel a bit let down by TeamGB's silence when all the hoo-ha went on last Aug but maybe they were contractually obliged to keep quiet. It's a personal choice so if others feel differently they are perfectly entitled to do so but I'm voting with my feet and purse. Pique is not getting a single Euro, dollar or pound from me

patlowe
05-04-2019, 17:02
My sentiments are with all of the above. It's sad and I'll miss it so, but it would gall me to support Pique and Co either with my presence or my pocket. I most certainly will not subscribe over and above what I already subscribe to watch tennis, but if it's free (Ha! Ha!) I might have a peek, or simply keep an eye on the scores! I'm piqued-off!

JimmyG
05-04-2019, 19:37
I’m boycotting it on principle. The thought of giving money to Pique is sickening.
Half empty stands won’t look, or sound, good and only hope of getting a better (more traditional) format in the future.
I’ll also be hoping GB lose at the QF stage or earlier so we have a home/away tie next February, think it is important to support the Feb round as it is now the closest thing to the real Davis Cup.

Ive decided I want to go to Madrid.
Sadly money talks loudest in all types of sport – I don’t think its ever really been about the fans, despite what we bring to it. Ask my partner about that as a football fan!

I always said I wanted to see how the new format would work – to know that we could definitely see and support Team GB play in the RR stages if we bought tickets. They do seem to have set things up to allow the fan groups to be together again. So although I still don’t like the changes, Ive decided to roll with it and see what its like.

Maybe they’re testing the waters with the price of the tickets this time around, with the fear of having empty seats, and given the huge backlash over the change in format - but its one of the cheapest DC’s for a long while.

I too have decided I want to go to Madrid. While feeling sad about the demise of the old format, the changes were voted on last year so now it is going to be different. There will be a GB team competing and I believe the lads should be supported.

I am well aware that most of the forum members have a different view and I hope you will respect my choice to go as I do yours not to go.

Well said Jerry! Exactly how I feel. A few die hard fans boycotting is sadly unlikely to change anything but as you say, if all the fans in every country had made a stand, even if they sold corporate seats, there would be little atmosphere and it would have made them think. But hey, each to theiir own.

So did I get the various emails. I have also seen the instructions in another fan group regarding how to proceed with tickets if we progress. It just doesn't suit my bank balance to have so much uncertainty about how long I may be there regarding hotel bookings and flights.
I'll be back if / when it changes to something more fan-friendly.

in the meantime I'm looking forward to the Fed cup.

I'm not sure who else does it but with a Halifax Clarity card you don't pay any charges and they give a good exchange rate. Have just had my Roland Garros tickets come up on my statement for this month. I got the card a few years ago to stop this from happening.

I'm not going. Mainly because I don't want to give Pique any of my money. But I only started going because of Andy and a guaranteed chance to see him play. Then the last couple of years I've enjoyed the social aspect of meeting up with AMFF, even with no Andy.

I have no problem with anyone going, it's up to everyone to make up their own minds, and I'll certainly be interested to hear how it goes.

I'm with Jimmy on this, actually hope we lose and have to play a February tie which I might be persuaded to attend....

When I found out Andy was playing in the Davis Cup in Madrid, and living in Lisbon, I went and bought some tickets! I notice that the previous replies here have been a bit lacklustre about the event, but until recently I was not sure I would ever have the chance to see Andy play live again so if Andy is up for this, so am I!
If anybody is interested tickets at https://www.daviscupfinals.com/ticketing Both the group matches are in Stadium 3. I have been to the Caja Magica before and the two courts which are not centre court are really tiny so there are probably just a few dozen tickets left for each group match (45 Euros) Edit: 47 for the Kazakhstan match, 36 for the Netherlands. GB is in Group E. The QF ticket was 60 Euros (about 650 tickets left) and the SF tickets are either 192 Euros if you buy the same seat for both or 123 each (there were still as I write some very good tickets - right behind the servers - available. In fact plenty of tickets still).
I also booked a B&B 5 minutes walk away for about 30 Euros a night - I remember last time the Caja Magica is some way out of Madrid so I thought I would do that for any late finish.
Nothing is sold out yet apart from one or two matches involving Spain but best to get tickets asap of course. It would be lovely to see and meet some of you, even if it is not the "real thing" - but to celebrate seeing Andy playing
again! :)
PS For group matches certain sectors are reserved for one team, so check the sector you buy tickets for.

Britwatch Sports (who as you know I write for, you'll have seen me tweeting out mine and other articles ) are looking to meet (if going) or get the views of those who are not going on this new format. Please can you follow Britwatch on twitter/Facebook etc so that our opinions can be gathered - the publicity for the forum/group would be great - other groups of fans have already provided their views, would be good to get ours (and not just from me ) x

Hi Sharon
Welcome to AMFF. Think there are only four of us from AMFF going to the new format DC. Im not sure where Tina and Winnie are staying - Im sure they will respond to confirm. Like a lot of recent away ties GB fans are staying in different hotels across the city (depending on your budget). I booked my hotel in the Lavapies area (were in the Ibis budget which Im lead to believe is fairly basic) because its close to the Line 3 metro for Caja Magica, but close enough to Madrid to sightsee. With so few of us there isn't really anything organised and until we arrive to collect our tickets Im not even sure where we are sitting! Will send you a personal message so we can link up.

Hello SharonG - I am going to Madrid and staying in a BnB. It will be my first time in one but it is 4 minutes walk from the location - about 300 metres! It was about 30 Euros a night. I have been to this location and remember having a lot of trouble getting back into Madrid when the event finished late so decided to try BnB and avoid any transport problems late at night.

I can send you a personal message but if I remember correctly from when I joined the forum, as a new member you have to make about 10 posts before you will be in the system for personal messages and you do not seem to have done that yet. I'm not going but heard 80 from BATS and just read report 2 of 25 sessions sold out (Spanish ones) and 7 others at 50%. The most tickets sold to another nation is 3k to Brits, surprised so many, could be 1500 x 2 but thinking more likely some may have bought extra sessions. Anyways hope you and others going enjoy yourselves

We also agree (Lynne and I) and also hope it's a terrible flop, not the tennis but as a financial endeavor.
We hope all going still enjoy it but not too much as in, the atmosphere mainly.
I noted that Andy has asked for fans to give it a chance?
Sorry but we asked all players to consider the fans 1st as this was always the Fans tournament at heart.
Plying for ones country first and foremost not so much for the money.
Tim Henman said it had to change as the top players weren't playing?
If the top players don't want to play they won't, still 9 of the top 20 not playing now according to what I read!
Sometimes it's no bad thing. Think of Cams performance in Spain? That's just one of many.

A big thank you to all the players present and past that have spoken out including Sascha.
Let's hope that it's a big enough flop for the powers that be to have to eat some humble pie and
stop trying to grab the money that used to go to all the home team venues/areas.
And go back to the old system as much as possible. As soon as possible.

Maybe we should'ave had a banner made for those going to hold up making our feelings felt. (Like)

Whilst I also would not go now or in the forseeable future and far less interest in the competition, will still get a bit of excitement with Andy . Hope those going get some enjoyment but certainly not the same, have feeling though that whilst it won't be the most succesful by far will not be flop either. However longer term think difficult for both this and ATP cup to thrive, so possibly a merger.

From the BBC:

The Lawn Tennis Association has given away 900 tickets to Great Britain fans to cheer on the team at Saturday's Davis Cup semi-final with hosts Spain.

After Andy Murray pledged to "sort out as many tickets as possible", the LTA said fans could email the governing body to get up to four free tickets for the match, in Madrid.

From Twitter:

LTA@the_LTA·29m (https://twitter.com/the_LTA)

All successful #DavisCup (https://twitter.com/hashtag/DavisCup?src=hashtag_click) ticket applicants have been notified
Unfortunately due to the incredible demand if you've not been contacted yet we won't be able to offer tickets but please do keep supporting the team at home and across social media with #BackTheBrits (https://twitter.com/hashtag/BackTheBrits?src=hashtag_click)

'My Davis Cup - same but different'

So I went to Madrid to watch the RR stages of new format Davis Cup and I absolutely loved it. It was exciting, intense and familiar in so many ways.
Im so glad I went to see for myself what it was like, so Ive decided I can move on and ignore politics of it all (personally I don't give a fig about Mr Pique) because I want to see and support Team GB as Ive done for the last 20+ years. The team definitely want us to be there for them too.
Thanks are owed to Sally for sorting the tickets - we couldn't have had better seats being right behind and in touching distance of the team. And what a team it was!
Clearly there are serious issues they need to address for next year - to me it sounds like they've acknowledged this and are going to try and improve things.

I was happy just being there for the RR stages but definitely want to go all week next year as there is a score to settle and we deserve to lift the DC trophy again. I hope more AMFFers will change their mind and come too as I did feel sad seeing so many SUBA, M/nators, BATS and tennis clubs present and only 3 of us there from AMFF (my partner Steve doesn't count !!! although he thought is was brilliant too).

Tina and Winnie were there all week so Im sure they will have a good perspective on it as well.

I posted in the other thread, but as you know, I am in for next year hopefully.
I too hope more AMFFers will consider going. It’s not a ‘fan group’ competition (or it shouldn’t be) but we are rapidly fading into the background when it comes to on the ground support, which is such a shame considering we were the first and one time official Andy Murray group.

I do not really have much more to say other than what I have previously posted and what Gill has said above. I too am very glad I went to Madrid to support our GB team throughout the four ties played last week which were engrossing and entertaining to watch as well as at times full of tension. I fully intend to return next year. I am pleased to see that more of you are thinking of giving it a try in 2020. Make the most of it while it is still held in Europe. Yes, there were some problems but as Gill said they are aware of those and will be looking at how it can be improved in future. I know some of you probably enjoyed the uncertainty and speculation involved in the "real DC" home and away ties but I did not like the panic booking of several hotels in various cities and trying to book travel at fairly short notice when venues were not announced until the last possible date before a tie. Now, GB's place for 2020 is secured by reaching the semi final, it is on the ATP Calendar for 23 November 2020 and I expect that, as this year, the draw will happen soon after the March qualifiers are played so we would then know which group and which days GB RR matches would be played so travel and accommodation could be booked well ahead of November by those intending to go next time. Yes, I know not everyone can take time off work etc just when they want to but this does require less time off than several ties during the year as before and can be planned well ahead of time. So, here's to next year!:wino:
