Please see post 12 here (https://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?4453-Davis-Cup-FINAL-2021-25-11-5-12-Main-thread&p=295621&viewfull=1#post295621) for 2021 updated information. This initial post and the next 10 posts relate to the 2020 event which was cancelled.
Having been given a Wild Card into the Final this year, Great Britain has 'earned' their place in the 2020 Final by reaching the 2019 Semi-Final (losing to Spain) along with Canada, Russia and Spain. 12 other nations have to qualify, 2 Wildcards have already been awarded to Serbia and France (no information given as to why those particular 2 teams).
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has announced the Draw for the Davis Pique Cup by Rakuten Qualifiers 2020, to be held on 6-7 March 2020.
The 12 home-and-away ties will consist of four singles matches and one doubles match with all matches played over the best-of-three tiebreak sets. Two singles matches will be played on Friday 6 March, with the doubles match followed by two reverse singles matches on Saturday 7 March.
The 12 winning nations in the Qualifiers will compete in the Davis Cup by Rakuten Madrid Finals 2020. They will join this year’s four semi-finalists – Canada, Great Britain, Russia and Spain – and the two wild card nations – France and Serbia – in the Finals on 23-29 November 2020. The 12 losing nations will compete in World Group I ties in September 2020.
The Qualifying Draw is as follows:
Croatia (s) (c) v Pakistan/India
Hungary (c) v Belgium (s)
Colombia (c) v Argentina (s)
USA (s) (c) v Uzbekistan
Australia (s) (c) v Brazil
Italy (s) (c) v Korea, Rep.
Germany (s) (c) v Belarus
Kazakhstan (s) (c*) v Netherlands
Slovakia (c*) v Czech Republic (s)
Austria (s) (c) v Uruguay
Japan (s) (c*) v Ecuador
Sweden (s) (c) v Chile
(s) denotes seeded nation
(c) denotes choice of ground
(*) denotes choice of ground determined by lot
Quite the travelling involved in some of those ties!
So they are going to hold it in Spain again? Doesn't this give Spain an advantage having a larger home crowd on successive years.

Yes. And they want it in Madrid for a 3rd year too i.e. 2021
Indian Wells would also like to hold it after that.

Well if they keep having a home tie they'll probably keep winning.............

Switzerland not involved - do they play a tie later in the year v one of the losing teams in the March qualifications for a chance to qualify in 2021? I know Fed would rather be playing in front of 42,000 fans elsewhere anyway.

Switzerland play Estonia in a group 2 playoff in September. I don't expect Roger or Stan to be involved. Not sure, but I think the loser goes down to zonal group matches.

It looks as though the team participants and draws, as made for 2020, are being carried forward to 2021. Hence the title of this thread!!! I've copied over Hawkeye's post about the venues.
RR and QF to be played in Innsbruck
Group C - GBR, France and Czech
Group F - Austria, Germany, Serbia
Winners of this QF will then transfer to Madrid for the Semi-Final (and Final?).
The Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals will take place across three cities on 25 November - 5 December in 2021. Madrid, Innsbruck and Turin will each host two of the six groups, with Madrid staging two quarter-finals, and Innsbruck and Turin one quarter-final each. The Spanish capital will also host the semi-finals and final.
The Finals will feature 18 teams:
- 12 qualifiers - Australia, Austria, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Sweden and USA
- The previous year’s four semi-finalists - Spain, Canada, Great Britain and Russia
- Two wild card nations - France and Serbia
The 18 teams will compete in six round-robin groups of three teams. The six group winners plus the two second-placed teams (making 8 teams in all) with the best records based on sets and games won will qualify for the quarter-finals.
The Davis Cup champions will be crowned after the completion of the knockout phase.
The two finalists will automatically qualify for the 2022 Finals.
The teams finishing 3rd-18th will take part in the 2022 Qualifiers.
Two nations from the Qualifiers will continue to be eligible for wild cards into the Finals.

Developments in Austria may have a bearing on the Innsbruck leg. The country has declared a nationwide lockdown from Monday 22nd November due to rising Covid cases. They have a lowish vaccination rate and have also stated that it'll be mandatory for all citizens to have vaccination by February 2022.

The possibility of something like this happening was one reason why I, very reluctantly, decided to not travel to the DC this time.
It has been difficult to get into Austria anyway - I think one could go in only for a good reason rather than a holiday.

Official: Due to the lockdown, which starts next Monday in Austria, the Davis Cup final tournament from 25th to 30th November 2021 in Innsbruck will be played without spectators. (via Nikolaus Fink, a tennis journalist for www.tennisnet.com (http://www.tennisnet.com))

I too feel sorry for those who bought tickets in expectation of watching a lot of top class representing their nations. No doubt there will be recompense but I hope it has come in time for hotels to be cancelled without loss and for travel companies to be understanding.

How fantastic - 5 years of what was the Davis Cup in that well known hub of fun and tennis, the Middle East. Hopefully they'll keep the two countries/cities format and the final can be played in Saudi Arabia's "chop chop square". Cannot. Wait.
I agree with you, suttontennis. If I couldn't go, it would get shown somewhere either on a BBC channel or the BBC's website. Now, they're not bothering to show any of it.

a bit of background on our opponents.
France go with Rinderknech (58), Mannarino (71), Gasquet (86) as possible singles but a strong doubles pair of Mahut (5)/Huges-Herbert (8)
Czech Rep pick Vesely (82) Lehecka (138), Kolar (140) Machac (143).
We should be able to overcome these. Optimistic.

only Eurosport has the rights (player not that much if you do not have channel l though that will not suit everyone) and tbh I do not view Davis Cup as a big thing anymore, likely to have less significance if it moves to Abu Dhabi and certainly will not have the buzz.
Don't they get a Wild Card team for being the hosts?
Or have I mixed that up with one of the 'lookalike' events on the ATP or WTA tours.
It's a very sad day for tennis and the legacy of Mr Davis who wanted equal opportunity for all nations to participate. That is no longer the case and it's a terrible indictment of how money rules everything these days.
The fact is that Pique lost money in 2020 (admittedly Covid played a huge part in that) and he and the ITF sought a financial solution to the problem. And ended up signing with Abu Dhabi of all places. Not even Indian Wells which at least has the organisational credentials and tennis nous to run things properly.
The DC and ITF Committees could have left the whole thing as it was.
They've gone the money route and it'll see the demise of this once glorious event.

Only to the players, none of the history matters much. What matters is money and points, both of which will be on offer, the former at a better rate than your average 250 or 1000. What's not to like? The doubles could have gone either way really. The German pair, specifically Puetz, really upped their game in the tie breaks, whereas the Brits, particularly Salisbury, seemed to tense up at the wrong time. Still, all the team will learn from this and hopefully take confidence in coming so close to a SF spot. These four should be our DC team for a couple of years, unless Kyle can get his fitness and form back.

They're into a tie-breaker for the 1st set of their match in DC Final 2021. Finely tuned at 6-6, change of ends. Medvedev had the set on his racquet serving at 7'6 but Cilic breaks. The Russian still ahead just on 8'7 with Cilic to serve.
Russia takes the 1st set of the match. Meddybear just edged that TB 7'6(7)

I can't believe it's not Russia win the not Davis Cup in a virtually empty stadium. One for the annals of sporting history

Well done Medvedev - battled through the tie-breaker in the 1st set and dominated the 2nd to close out the Final and win the 2022 Davis Cup title (with Rublev & team).
Shame for Cilic who must have hoped to win it at the almost end of his tennis career.
But that's tennis for you!!!
As for 2022 ... not betting against Camels giving Pique a run for his money.

Ahhh, a nice bit of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto because the Russian national anthem isn't allowed. Sums up the farce Davis Cup has become :rolling:

I was watching yesterday and while not filled to capacity I would not describe the stadium as virtually empty.
