On an otherwise awful day for the Brits, Harriet Dart beats Misaki Doi in a third set match tie break to advance to the second round at the AO.

Harriet was 1-5 down in that tie-break and took it 10-6! Third set was littered with service breaks but a fighting Harriet came through.

Heather and Harriet both lost in straights today, and so ends the British singles involvement.

Harriet went down fighting. She did break Simona the first time she was serving for the match.

The 3rd Round upsets continue with 2nd seed Pliskova departing (lost for first time in 7 meetings to Pavlyuchenkova in 2 breakers), after Osaka lost in straights to Gauff and Serena went down 7-5 in 3rd to Wang. Muguruza unseeded this time had return to form and crushed 5th seed Svitolina 6-1,6-2. Kontaveit also swept past 6th seed Bencic for loss of 1 game. Caroline Wozniacki also exited the tour and received many tributes after losing a close battle with Jabeur (Who put out Konta earlier) 7-5 in decider .

So sad to see Caroline retire ..... she has been such a great ambassador for the sport. She's comparatively young to hang up her racquet but she has been around for a long time and the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis must have been devastating for her. :crying: I am so glad that she managed to win a Major ...... she took so much stick for being number one without winning one.

Happy retirement, Caro!!

Top seed Ash Barty had a tough battle with Alison Riske who defeated her at Wimbledon, however this time found a way through 6-3,1-6,6-4. Will now play Petra Kvitova who lost a long first set on the breaker but won 6-2 in 3rd over 22nd seed Sakkari. Coco Gauff though failed to back up big win over Osaka, took first on breaker but 14th seed Kenin took the next 2 6-3 6-0. However obviously early in career and has been impressing. Jabeur also through to the quarters ending the run of Wang.

Rooting for Ash. Would love to see an Aussie win the Oz Open. Same for the men's.

Ash Barty looks a strong favourite to reach the final as she takes on 14th seed Sofia Kenin. She was impressive in the quarters, Petra Kvitova made most of the running in the 1st but Ash saved 8 out of 9 break point in a 7-6 (8-6),6-2 win. The other semi tonight is between Simona halep and Gabrine Muguruza, Simona crushed over Kontaveit for loss of 2 games whilst Gabrine came from break down to get the better of Pavlyuchenkova 7-5,6-3.

Hope Ash takes it but Simona and Muguruza look rather daunting as well. And then there's Kenin.

The Ladies Final will be Muguruza v Kenin.
In their respective Semi-Finals Muguruza beat Halep and Kenin beat Barty.

Oh my! A Kenin/Muguruza final! Did ANYONE see that coming??!! I certainly didn't! But then, that's what I love about the women's game. It's so open and less predictable with a wealth of possibilities waiting to come through and with less barriers to break through than in the men's game. I am sorry though that Ash couldn't make it to the final.

Disappointed Ash did not make final, Kenin had some inspiration but Barty tightened up in the key moments. Perhaps she felt under pressure with so many rooting for her. I was less surprised with Muguruza going through to final even if quite an upset due to her run this tournament though certainly would not have predicted it at the start. A tough battle with Gabrine and Simona in the heat but the spaniard's weapons proved effective and she stepped up on the big points.

Disappointed for Ash. And she's out in the doubles too. Poop! I wish Bianca was healthy and playing this tournament.

Sofia Kenin comes from a set down to beat Garbine Muguruza 4-6 6-2 6-2 and win her first Slam.

Yes the 21 year old American wins her first Slam with a 4-6,6-2,6-2 win over former French/Wimbledon champ Gabrine Muguruza. The spaniard initially dominated but great play from Kenin in 2nd and 3rd sets as she put Muguruza under pressure. Disappointing though that Gabrine's game some what fell apart towards the end, 3 doubles in last game. Significantly Kenin came back from 0-40 at 2 all and the confidence rose.

Well I must say I surprised myself! For cheering for an American player. Don't ask me why. But I think it was a good bish bash bosh final from both and I'm glad a new face won a slam! Good for Sofia! It seems tho' her Dad has really pushed her based on all the videos I've seen of her as a kid harassing the adult players.

I do have to say tho' that I LOVED Garbine's dress (Kiki Madlenovic worse the same outfit) - just beautiful!
