An emergency board meeting at the AELTC next week when a decision will be made on the 2020 championships, playing behind closed doors ruled out and limits on how long they could postpone if current dates thought not to be viable. https://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/news/articles/2020-03-25/aeltc_update_on_the_championships_2020.html

Looks like Wimbledon can not go ahead this year, however rightly Global Health is the bigger priority. If cancelled will need to see if those successful in ballot will be offered tickets for next year or if just refunds and they will run it again.

They are just putting off the inevitable. We have been told/advised to stay inside our home, as classed as vulnerable persons, for 12 weeks. This “ends” on 15 June but I just can’t imagine travelling to Wimbledon 2 weeks later. This year was successful in 2 ballots!

There is no way they will be able to hold it. I'm planning on watching a recording of Andy winning on finals day! :tennis: :trophy:

There is and always has been only one decision that the AELTC can take - cancellation - so why all this havering? The miracle they and we are praying for just will not happen. Once it was announced that other major sporting events held in the UK in the summer were cancelled/postponed it became obvious that there would be no Wimbledon this year. Also once the French Open organising committee had announced their dates for September it was obvious that a Wimbledon Championship this year was out of the question. When would it be possible for the AELTC to be able to hold it with the US Open and French Open both hoping to be able to hold their Championships in the late summer? There is no certainty that it will be possible to play the US Open and French Open this year.

It would not realistically be possible for the AELTC to hold the Championships any later than September because of the British weather and the fact that the tournament is played on grass. Also there is the question of school holidays?

It’s rather like The Olympics. There was never any prospect of it happening. They need to just cancel the whole tour this year.

I want them to write off the football league this year, but only because Norwich are bottom.......!!!

The available daylight hours in the autumn would probably be even more of a restriction than the weather... A summer without Wimbledon seems so unreal, but we have to accept what we can't change and it's for a very good reason.

But didn't they have Davis Cup at Wimbledon in September???

Yes Dc was held at Wimbledon Court no 1 in September a few times, but think a two week event would be more risky and the outside courts used a lot in the first week. In any case the calendar will be busy if the US/French stick to their planned dates.

A Davis Cup tie was played between GB and Austria at Wimbledon in September 2008. It must have been one of Andy's first matched played for GB in a Davis Cup tie. I remember him being interviewed by Sue Barker and being very impressed by Andy here and became a fan of his.

I was at that tie. Despite winning his singles relatively easily, only losing a set against Melzer, Andy was badly let down by the rest of the team. Bogdanovic lost his two sungles fairly easily, and Jamie and Ross didn't do much better in the doubles.

Yes that tie was a real downer but the weather was glorious. There was also a tie at Wimbledon in Sept 2007 when Tim retired. Had fabulous seats for that one and fantastic weather too, but I don't think they could do a 2 week event in Sept.

Pretty sure they will just cancel. I hope they rollover the tickets to next year for those of you who have been successful in the ballot. Can't think of a reason why they wouldn't. People who can't make the date could just return the tickets and then they can be re-balloted

I enjoyed both ties live as well, though the Austrian one was disappointing. Certainly much more challenging to have Wimbledon in September and would think a long shot. There was also a GB tie at Wimbledon in 2000 which resulted in a bit of an embarassing defeat to Ecuador when Arvind Parmar lost a 2 set lead to Giovanni Lapentti, however that one was held in July not long after the Championships.

I was at that one too and signed up to AMEX who were giving away toy dogs, which I immediately called Greg and he sits in front of the TV in our lounge

I wasn't at that one but I do remember it. A bit of a low point in our DC history but we rose again

I was there Tim Henman final match too. It was great! Sad day when he retire though. I remember nice weather that tie too.

September is risky with weather and you don't know how it goes. Some years September nice and hot, other years it cold and raining. You can't tell really.

It turned a bit cooler on the Sunday though, so much so that at first Andy didnt want to play the first dead singles. I think he had to be talked into it,.but wasn't really bothered. He was in one of drop shot moods and most of them failed. Had he not played then Henman would have needed to, so Jamie Baker could then play Karanusic, which wouldnt have been right given the big send off Tim enjoyed on Saturday.

Sorry for all of you who got tickets in the ballot this year. I hope Wimbledon honours them for next year.

It had become inevitable, whilst sad no Championships this year could not go ahead on schedule and obviously postponement was not considered to be viable. The AELTC have said they will be in touch with ticket holders who will receive refunds and opportunity to purchase tickets for same day/court next year. official statement here- Wimbledon cancellation

Unfortunately the LTA are not giving people successful in the Wimbledon ballot that option, although they are doing it with Queens and Eastbourne.

Wimbledon for many many years has been my yearly form of self isolation! When I was working I took the 2nd week as leave and never moved from the tv; friends knew better than to visit or phone, my dogs forgot what exercise was (apart from an early morning walk). Since I retired my viewing has obviously increased to the 2 full weeks. Only ever been once - in 1995 with a ground ticket. The decision was inevitable but it will leave a big gap in my usual summer schedule. Hopefully we'll all be around for 2021!

I should imagine that Federer in hindsight regrets that he did not make the most of his chance last year to win another Wimbledon championship and distance himself from the growing threat that Novak Djokovic could if he remains fit overtake him as the GOAT.

To be fair to Federer I honestly don't think he could have done more. Djokovic just seemed to have super powers last year.
