No qualies, no mixed, no more than two support staff, and Cincinnatti lose their event to NYC.
With no qualies it means the players hardest hit aren't ablevto earn a decent payday.

Oh dear that means Djokovic has a sure path to the final. Hopefully Thiem or Medvedev can stop him.
I think the chances of it actually happening are as close to zero as makes no odds.

(https://mobile.twitter.com/tumcarayol)Paire arrived in New York on the very, very last possible day to compete in Cincinnati - four days before his first match against Borna Coric. He retired while down 6-0 1-0 and looked visibly ill.
It could put the whole USO in doubt AND Roland Garros cos there's going to be a bunch of players in 2weeks of quarantine on arrival in France.

Strange rumours on twitter about the delay to the start of Zverev v Mannarino which was due on Armstrong at 2.30pm US time - now possibly on at 5pm?????
Maly Thomas@Maly_Tweet· 5m
Mischa Zverev just told the Eurosport Germany that the players are awaiting a decision from the gouverment of New York whether Mannarino can play or not because of the Paire incident
Carole Bouchard@carole_bouchard (https://twitter.com/carole_bouchard)31m (https://twitter.com/carole_bouchard/status/1301968949677039616)
I fear we have a mess coming in NYC... Tennis without drama is not tennis.
So Cuomo is just now being like should have we let those players play?! Like, dude, it’s been a week!!!
FloridaDame@Fantine21· 35m
Replying to @josemorgado
ESPN just said the delay seems to be related to some "political issues" involving the quarantine of French players post-Benoit Paire positive test.
Kamakshi Tandon@Kamakshi_Tandon (https://twitter.com/Kamakshi_Tandon)33m (https://twitter.com/Kamakshi_Tandon/status/1301968482456739842)
On ESPN, Chris Fowler just said it's "political," perhaps something to do with conversations with French government on getting them home.
Ben Rothenberg@BenRothenberg (https://twitter.com/BenRothenberg)43m (https://twitter.com/BenRothenberg/status/1301966206442840064)
Zverev-Mannarino was supposed to start at 2:30 pm on Armstrong. It's now 3:30. Zverev just chillin' (shirtlessly, as per) in his suite in Ashe. Mannarino is one of the "Paire 11," losers of which have now been confined to their hotel rooms Something is happening...
...this is where not having many journalists allowed on site becomes more of an issue.
If state or county health officials want Mannarino pulled from the US OPEN (https://twitter.com/hashtag/USOpen?src=hashtag_click)and quarantined after a COVID exposure, that makes plenty of sense. What's a mess, though, is that he was allowed to play and win two rounds since that exposure, only for their minds to change.
Sallydaisy
04-09-2020, 20:36
OOP has been revised for Armstrong.
Whatever was the issue seems to have been resolved ... per Ben Rothenburg on Twitter.
Update: #USOpen (https://twitter.com/hashtag/USOpen?src=hashtag_click) has rescheduled Zverev-Mannarino for 5 pm. So, after all that, it's happening?

Covid Protocols update for 11 players at the USO ... per Cracked Racquets and Ben Rothenburg.
Cracked Racquets has obtained internal USTA documents revealing both the names of 10 players directly impacted by Benoit Paire’s positive test (https://www.crackedracquets.com/mini-break-podcast-200830/) for COVID-19, as well as the newly implemented safety procedures those players must follow. The list, which includes 2019 U.S Men’s runner-up Daniil Medvedev, is sorted into two distinct categories of coronavirus containment protocols.
Medvedev is in the second group of players who were in less direct contact with Paire. Medvedev, Damir Dzumhur (who lost his first round match on Monday night to top-seeded Novak Djokovic), and Nicolas Mahut will be subjected to daily testing, but will otherwise be able to move freely around the grounds.
These seven more directly affected players include five French players (Kiki Mladenovic, Gregoire Barrere, Richard Gasquet, Adrian Mannarino, Edouard Roger-Vasselin) and two Belgians (Ysaline Bonaventure and Kirsten Flipkens). Remarkably, all six of the seven who were in the U.S. Open singles draw won their first match and remain in the tournament.
The groups of seven and three, plus Paire, add up to the 11 affected players originally reported (https://behindtheracquet.com/podcast/) by Noah Rubin.
The USTA documents delineate several protocols for the seven more directly affected players.
These players must subject themselves to morning temperature checks and COVID-19 screenings at the beginning of each day.
The players will receive private transportation when traveling either to or from the hotel or USTA National Center.
The USTA has also appointed one specified staff member to coordinate the daily schedule of each impacted player. This group is not allowed to leave their respective hotel rooms except when they are traveling to or at the USTA National Center.
Grandstand court will serve as the main designated area for players in isolation, though multiple other areas on site have been cordoned off for the specific usage of these players.
These players cannot freely travel the grounds; the keys to their respective isolation areas will be kept by tournament staff, by whom they must also be accompanied when walking through the facility.
Impacted players will also have their tournament credentials confiscated upon return to their respective hotels (Players must be wearing their credentials in order to move freely around the hotel).
Lastly, upon elimination from the US Open, the players must receive explicit approval from the USTA doctors before leaving New York.
+ further comments
Ben Rothenburg: The post-loss lockdown shows just how much rules were bent to let COVID-exposed players continue playing.
Reem Abulleil: Update from the “Bubble in the Bubble” crew. Flipkens says players must now stay in their rooms until next weekend. They can no longer follow the amended protocols that have been in place for them the last few days.
Dreddy Tennis: As I Said... Whatever Fits Into Their Plan At Any Given Time 2 Keep The Tournament Going, Is What Will Be Done... From Day 1 Thats Been The Way...
Flipkens:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EhFcs0dWAAApVyc?format=jpg&name=large
So flipkens is now in full quarantine as she’s out of the event but there’s other close contact players still out there competing in the open. Explain to me please how that even makes sense. Just shows the NYC Health department bended the rules for the US open to continue.

I feel sorry for Novak, there was no bad intent, but the right decision. A real shame, but Tim's right - players have to take responsibility. Not the way fans would want it, but a new slam champion is guaranteed.
A bit ironic for Tim to be talking about it.

Well, he's in the right place at the right time to give 'commentary' on it ... and reinforce that it was the right decision regardless of whether there was intent or not (and clearly Novak didn't intend to hurt anyone).

Background for those not watching.
Serving at 5-5 *0-30, Djokovic took a tumble and hurt his shoulder, called immediately for trainer. He'd already hit a ball into the back of the court in temper. On resumption he lost his serve and hit the ball behind him in frustration.

What an opportunity. It's now wide open. How will it mentally affect the remaining players? Really rooting for Goffin and Dom, but it I had to pick I'd go for Medvedev - if he plays like he did in last year's final he can blow anyone away - virtually unplayable. But a long way to go. So intriguing!!
I am in no way a Djoko fan, but like RB, I do feel sorry for him. Reminds me a wee bit of Shapo in the DC match in Canada. What will annoy me now is the plethora of judgemental comments which will appear on social media. It was unintentional, but he will get it in the neck! Gives folks a chance to have a go at him. 2020 has been his year for attracting negative headlines.

What a shock, not least for the lineswoman. It does seem harsh when it was unintentional but he has to take responsibility for his actions and it was a fair decision when similar incidents have resulted in a default

Statement from the USTA:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EhQsPHkXgAAULqP?format=jpg&name=small
The wording a bit clumsy since it leads with the word 'intentionally' which clearly wasn't the case but 'hitting the ball with negligent disregard of the consequences' is rather more accurate.
A salutory lesson for all players ... it's 20 years since the last such default at a Slam.

Whilst there are times Djokovic deserves criticism this situation a bit different, however still at fault-though obviously some fans will go overboard and not be subjective. Hopefully lineswoman will be ok, we are awaiting further news. A far as tournament goes would really like Thiem to wn!
He did not appear to hit it that hard. But it must have been really uncomfortable for the lineswoman getting hit in the neck in the windpipe area.
Sallydaisy

I hope the lineswoman is OK, she went down really quickly so the ball must have struck in just the wrong place. And it was probably the shock - poor woman, and even worse that it was all on camera for the world to see!!!
Meanwhile, Djokovic has left Flushing Meadows without doing press or making an apology.
Whilst he's no doubt in shock too it might have been a good move to at least say a few words.

Yep. Although the studio team thought he'd been told immediately that it was a default (and he must have realised it would be) but the officials took time to fully explain why.

What a surprise to wake up to. I suddenly feel a lot more interested in the tournament.
I put radio five live on at about 9pm, last night, and almost straight away I heard about Djokovic being defaulted because he hit a ball and the ball hit a female line judge's neck. They then played the incident and I could clearly hear the woman gasping for breath, after the ball had hit her. I wasn't surprised that he's been docked all his points from the US Open and all of his prize money as well. I just hope the woman was able to recover from it.

So unintended. So wrong. I'm not disclosing her name to respect her privacy.
As for the disqualification, I need to go back within and work on my disappointment and turn this all into a lesson for my growth and evolution as a player and human being,
I apologise to the US Open tournament and everyone associated for my behaviour. I'm very grateful to my team and family for being my rock support, and my fans for always being there with me.

The people on social media arguing that it wasn't intentional are missing the point. I'm sure that no player ever intends to hit someone but the rule states if the ball strikes someone when it is "out of play" then the player is disqualified. Novak surely knows the rules so it was not for him to plead his case. There's no case to answer. I really couldn't believe how long it took for the decision to be made.

Sacha finding at least some impressive form, hopefully 4th will be interesting and both compete well!

Hold each, break each. 2-2.
Back on servant.
Come on Sacha - need him for my tennis for free comp.

Well, we're into a decider but not staying to watch. So scrappy, it's been almost painful to watch at times - both absolutely desperate to take advantage of this incredibly rare opportunity. I feel for them both. The overall winner is coming from the other side, that's for sure.

So on to a 5th and hopefully will be more compelling, feel Sacha has advantage now but with his inconsistency and lacklusture display earlier on cannot count on it. Carreno Busta serving after injury timeout.
Never that exciting but Zverev mounted the comeback and first time he has come back from 2 sets to love down, was the stronger also in the 5th and did become more aggresive as he takes it 6-3 and into the final! For a while was not pretty but he found a way, certainly will need a higher level on Sunday though! Carreno Busta will no doubt be a bit gutted but still good tournament.

I reckon Thiem will trounce Zverev. At least I hope so. I thought both semi-finals were a little lacklustre tonite. Women's is way more interesting, imho.

USO FINAL: [2]Dominic Thiem, AUT v [5]Alexander Zverev GER
Thiem took nearly as long to beat Medvedev in straights (6-2, 7-6 [7], 7-6 [4]) as it did for Zverev to beat Carreno Busta in five (3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3).

I thought Thiem /Medvedev was good in the 2nd and 3rd (though just caught up on 3rd this morning) Medvedev served for both but each time Dom found a way back, tough sets though surprising this match was straight sets. Daniil though was in a mood in the first after a call went against him. Thiem did have medical time out at end of 2nd afer issue with foot but did not seem to affect him too much. Going by the form of the finalists Thiem should win convincingly, though I suppose Zverev may step up somewhat. https://www.usopen.org/en_US/news/articles/2020-09-11/no_2_dominic_thiem_defeats_daniil_medvedev_advance s_to_final_against_alexander_zverev.html

Thiem injury issues ...
@ZahrerLukas (https://twitter.com/ZahrerLukas)1h (https://twitter.com/ZahrerLukas/status/1304735448800129024)
Dominic Thiem suffered an impingement after hyperextension in his right foot during his match vs. Medvedev. Intensive care by physio Alex Stober to follow, including cooling to avoid swelling. Stober is sure that Thiem will be ready on Sunday. #USOpen (https://twitter.com/hashtag/USOpen?src=hashtag_click)

Watching a replay of the 2nd semi now. Not a classic but Thiem looks good. I'm confident he's ready to go all the way. Playing his good friend Sascha has affected him in the past, but dealing with such things is part of becoming a champ. Best of 5, so time for players to get over cageyness and hopefully play a great match. It's Dom's time

Really hoping for a Thiem win. Not the worst thing if Zverev wins but I feel he keeps getting through matches, not by winning, just by the other player losing.

Eyebrow raising comments from young Sascha ahead of the final:
"The two best players in the world are going to be playing on the court".
Hmm, given the way he squeezed through it's highly debatable that he was the second best player at the open after Novak's departure, let alone in the world.
I know he's young and feels the weight of expectation but there's a fine line between self-belief and disrespectful arrogance; Sascha would do well to tread more carefully.

Thiem injury issues ...

As long as Thiem's injured foot doesnt restrict him too much then I can't see Zverev beating him. Thiem's has been so close to a GS victory already that he'll not need any more incentive to take that final step.

I was with all the players saying Thiem. Not so sure now. Zverev has stunned us all.
Zverev had such a slow start in the semi as it was his first night match and he had only played in the daytime and the conditions were different and slower at night.

Sascha playing better than previous rounds, and Dom playing a lot worse: each contributing to the other. Just hope being best of 5 there's time for Dom to get a grip. Their h2h is what it is for a reason, he's a much better player, but he's got to find his game when it matters.

From Jon Wertheim ...4m (https://twitter.com/jon_wertheim/status/1305252889015840775)
Reminder....the last player to beat Zverev is a man who sets off metal detectors with the contents of his hip. In the most endearing way possible, it's a fickle sport this tennis....

Thiem holds (eventually) so Zverev will serve for the 2nd set at *5-2.
Could be a long way back for Thiem if he can't get back on terms, there hasn't been a comeback win from 2 sets down since 1949. Medvedev almost pulled it off last year but that's what Thiem might have to do to win this.
