It's a Battle of the Brits in R1 as Johanna Konta faces Heather Watson!
At least we'll have ONE Briitish player through to Round 2 ...

Naomi got through 6-2 in the 3rd against Doi but hamstring still appears to be an issue at the moment.
Cori Gauff out in the 1st Round, was up against 31st seed Sevastova but that was a match she was more than capable of winning. Looked like she coming back but went down 6-3,5-7,6-4. Perhaps the expectation getting to her a bit and possibly struggling without a crowd.

After taking a tight first set 7-6(7), Johanna is strolling the second set 5-0*.

JAMES4578

Heather was up 6-3 in breaker but failed to capitalise losing it 9-7, obviously could not recover.

Sad, but Jo has a better chance of progressing. Shame there is no Mixed Doubles.

JAMES4578

Yes thought it was better for Johanna to win this one mind you as had more chance of a decent run, pity Heather fell away though.

Perhaps Kim not fullly fit , mind you.

Perhaps, she didn't look as svelte as she used to BUT she was whacking that ball and placing it majestically. Sigh. I was so hoping she'd go further.

Top seed Karolina Pliskova now gone down to Caroline Garcia 6-1,7-6 . (though Garcia former top tenner) Pliskova had two set points but failed to convert and faded in the breaker. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis

Wow Kiki M. had a meltdown yesterday. Was winning 6-1 5-1 and managed to lose the match! Then she said it was intolerable living in a bubble within a bubble. It's going to be so interesting to see how the French Open organizers compare with the USO.

JAMES4578
03-09-2020, 13:36
A mental collapse and maybe her comments said in the heat of the moment, in my opinion the Us Open got it absolutely right with the protocols (though obviously it is not easy being restricted). Had they been lax we might had had more to complain about.

Jo Konta will be on very soon v Sorana Cirstea on Court 5 (earlier than expected).

Mladenovic/Babos (top seeds!!!) withdrawn from the Ladies Doubles following a statement from Nassau County who have just woken up to the 'rules' being applied by the USTA regarding quarantine for the players who got too close to Benoit Paire last week.

Quite a contest between Shelby Rogers and Petra Kvitova.
1 set all and 5-5 in the 3rd. Rogers just fought off 3 match points ...

Kvits holds to love for 6-5. Rogers to serve to stay in it again.

JAMES4578
06-09-2020, 21:39
Thought Kvitova was going to take it there but did win serve easily for 6-5, Rogers still in it though, the American lead 2-0 in decider before being pegged back.

Sooooo disappointed for Petra. Now, I'm really placing ALL my hopes and dreams on Naomi. I love how she's stepped up about #BLM (along with Frances Tiafoe). And plus I really don't like any of the American women left.

Ugh disappointed in today's results all round. All the Canucks bounced out in singles AND doubles action. That leaves Denis left in the men's and that's it. Was disappointed for Maria. Maybe Azarenka or Kenin can beat Serena but tbh I don't like any of 'em - so loud and screamy. Oh Bianca where are you when we need you, hun?

JAMES4578
08-09-2020, 15:08
Think one with best chance against Serena would be Osaka, but not sure if she is totally fit after the hamstring issue (though won last match comfortably). Kenin will not have the chance as she went out to Elisie Mertens 6-3,6-3. Feeling though that no crowd benefits Williams in some ways.

RoastLamb
08-09-2020, 20:14
Azarenka has a chance tho'. She's beaten Serena before and I think she's very hungry. I think Serena will roll over Pironkova tbh. And I am also worried about Naomi's fitness but I love her heart!

Amazing win for Azarenka 6-1 6-0. She was fantastic and obviously enjoyed herself. She moved so well and was nigh on perfect. Should be an interesting semi-final. Go Vika!

JAMES4578

Don't think I'll bother with the women's side; can't muster any interest for anyone left in. Besides the Brits, Kim Clijsters and Donna Vekic are the only female players I enjoy watching and Mugu for her personality. Desperately need more captivating (and quiet) players.

Woot! VERY HAPPY that Naomi won her match and now Vika just beat Serena drama diva. I was getting thoroughly sick of the one-sided ESPN commentary on the American players esp. Serena. Mary Jo Fernandez really irritates me. However, now the final will be a joy to watch. Hoping Naomi wins but it's OK if Vika does too. She behaved like a boxer tonight - so cool to watch her fight back! I hate the noise some of these women make too but it's not going to change, alas. Glad Naomi will get to wear all her BLM masks.

Awake now after watching the match live. Did not manage to get to bed as was too tired to drag myself off the sofa at the end. I was rooting for Vika not because I don't like Serena (I don't) but I'm so happy to see Azarenka back after all she has been through. She is a fighter and always been a favourite of mine. The first set was torture to watch but she settled and then played like she had in the previous match. I would love her to win tomorrow. Must go for shower and hopefully I'll stay awake today.

JAMES4578
11-09-2020, 09:25
I was quite pleased with the results, have not seen Vika's win over Serena yet but she obviously came back strongly after a poor start. start against Williams can be crucial at times but Azarenka must have been tough mentally, whilst the 24th slam is proving somewhat elusive. Talk of the injury time out (for Achilles) but Williams says it did not affect her performance for long. https://www.usopen.org/en_US/news/articles/2020-09-10/victoria_azarenka_ends_serena_williams_quest_for_2 4th_grand_slam_singles_title.html Cannot see it happening at the French , see Serena has decided to play in Paris after earlier doubt.

I would prefer Osaka to take the title though, watched the first semi which for the most part was a hard hitting affair with both players going for broke at times. I was pretty confient Naomi would win but Jennifer Brady made it tough. https://www.usopen.org/en_US/news/articles/2020-09-10/2020_us_open_notebook_day_11_in_review.html

Azarenka in great form , really putting Osaka on pressure on returns as she takes first 6-1. Osaka though a bit edgy and making too many errors, hopefully she get going in the 2nd.

A complete turnaround as Osaka comes back from 0-2 to take 2nd 6-3. Vika had bit of a let down, though some great winners from Naomi. Long final game but Osaka broke again to take it.
