Another Grand Slam for us all to enjoy, hot on the heels of the US Open!
Roland Garros is going ahead and although initially planned to have no spectators they may try to have some limited seating for French fans but it all depends on Covid -19 and whether the virus is spreading again.

So, it's back to the red dirt and some of the participants are already practising in Rome this week and Hamburg next week. Not much time to acclimatise (unless you spent lockdown playing tennis on red clay ...).

They're going to allow 60% capacity for the stadiums for it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/53268001

Personally I think having up to 60% capacity at the French is a mistake, (though know a little while away yet) it could be higher if restrictions relax and I would have concerns. Though suppose they would take more care than they did at the Djokovic event. Think masks should be mandatory in the stands as well.

French Open qualifying entry list is out - no Andy Murray so going to need a wild card unless there are a lot of no-shows. I assume he's had the nod.

Jay Clarke, Liam Broady, Harriet Dart and Sam Murray are all entered though (in Qualies).

More information to follow as it comes through.
RollyG is insisting that ALL players reside in 1 of 2 available hotels for the duration of the tournament. No private accommodation for anyone ...

Surely it is virtually certain that Andy would receive a wild card if required, personally think still too many spectators with the infection rate quite high in France lately. Think good idea though to insist players stay in hotels though.

Going down .....
Initial hopes to have a lot of spectators are falling by the wayside as Covid spreads and restrictions in France increase. This is from the Twitter account of Quentin Moynet, a French journalist for L'Equipe:

Prime Minister Jean Castex announced a reduced limit to 1,000 people at Roland-Garros. He suggested that this number included the accredited (i.e. journalists, TV personnel, tournament staff). But, according to our information, it will be 1000 spectators + the accredited folk.
:pierre:

Sallydaisy
24-09-2020, 21:39
Some reactions (via Twitter) to the reduction in folks on site at RollyG.

Per Quentin Moynet (again):

Players, staffs, referees, ball collectors, journalists, security and maintenance personnel, cooks ... In total, there are nearly 4,000 accredited at Roland-Garros. Even with cuts in some positions, requiring 1000 people in total is to cancel the tournament
:baguette:

Tennis Majors:

French Prime Minister@JeanCASTEX (https://twitter.com/JeanCASTEX) on lowering #RG2020 (https://twitter.com/hashtag/RG2020?src=hashtag_click) crowd size: "The capacity has been lowered to 1,000. We will apply the same rules to RG as elsewhere" More from Castex: "There is no reason that we should not apply the same rules to everyone" Says included in the 1,000 allowed onto #RG2020 (https://twitter.com/hashtag/RG2020?src=hashtag_click) grounds each day are organizers, players and staff. "Up to [Roland-Garros] to define how they will manage. They told me the answer was yes [the tournament will happen]. I am not the Roland-Garros organizer. In the same way, you have soccer matches behind closed doors."

Carole Bouchard:

1) it's currently impossible as there's already more than 1000 people on site
2) Prime Minister didn't know it
3) Amateurism, again and again

Simon Cambers:

L'Equipe, usually well informed when it comes to French tennis matters, reports that the 1,000 person daily limit applies to French Open spectators and does not apply to accredited personnel, despite what the prime minister said tonight on French TV.
Thinking about the new dictat of 1,000 people on site at @rolandgarros (https://twitter.com/rolandgarros) - worth remembering that half the men's and women's fields will be out by Thursday, so second week would be much easier to manage. Fascinating to things pan out.

Sallydaisy
24-09-2020, 22:48
Didn’t know that!
From Chris Clarey of the New York Times:

Fans or no fans, if the tournament goes ahead, it will have first-round matchups to savor. Murray and Wawrinka are both three-time major champions, and they last played at the French Open in 2017 with Wawrinka defeating Murray, then ranked No. 1, in five grinding sets.

Murray’s hip condition was becoming a major issue at that stage, and Wawrinka was developing knee problems that forced him to undergo surgery later in 2017.

JAMES4578
25-09-2020, 10:33
certainly confusion earlier but the 1.000 cap only applies to spectators and confirmed by PM's office . I am relieved that it will not be 5.000 anyway. Certainly one of the worst draws for Andy but should hopefully not feel too much pressure against Wawrinka and whilst different in slam and on clay the last match should give him some confidence. Not looking too far ahead though! https://www.espn.co.uk/tennis/story/_/id/29967027/french-open-crowd-size-reduced-5000-1000-per-day-due-coronaviru

I'm really looking forward to Andy's match tomorrow. There's 2 ways of looking at it: yes it's a horrible draw and shame the event will lose a top player so early on (hopefully not Andy), but on the other hand Andy is not likely to go very deep so this R1 encounter which is worthy of a final guarantees us Andy fans a huge clash we probably wouldn't otherwise have had this RG. I for one can't wait. Go Andy! :cheer:

The 36-year-old, a former world No 7, said he had previously tested positive for the virus, asymptomatically, in August.

However Verdasco, who has been tested a number of times since, said he was refused the chance to take another test to find out if the initial one was inaccurate.

Oh dear. He has a point as he is negative with 2 private tests as there can be false positives. They should allow him an official retest especially as he was positive in August.

The 2nd match on Lenglen is about to start so that's Halep v Sorribes-Tormo.
To be followed by Kontaveit v Garcia.
Lenglen is playing under the roof (rain in Paris) so much depends how long the ladies take to complete their matches this afternoon, say between 2 and 3 hours? That'd be anytime between 2.30 and 3.30pm UK time for Andy v Stan.

Sallydaisy
27-09-2020, 11:30
A lot of the players are struggling with the cold, breezy and damp conditions (rain stopped player earlier on the uncovered courts) which is making the balls fly heavier than usual and slowing the courts down. Nishikori is just coming back basically from a year off due to elbow injury so he's probably going to take a while to get into his stride.

Unfortunately, he might have just found that stride!!! Breaks Dan to go 2-1 up in set 2.

Zverev was not feeling well with a fever (and had a temperature of 38 the night before the match) apparently and doctors had advised him not to play. I am surprised they let him play. I don't mind that Sascha played. If he hadn't tested positive for covid, it's his choice, but a bit optimistic to think he might get a quick straight sets win (as he said in presser). More information coming through about Sascha. Apparently he didn't have a test despite them be available. Quite astonishing. My first thought was that his symptoms being covid was just speculation because he would surely have been tested and only allowed to play if negative. I'm staggered that he wasn't made to test. Hope it's all moot and Sascha just has a bug but if covid there's serious questions about not just his conduct, but also his team and the protocols in place.

Lovely to hear the French crowd shouting - they are always good supporters of their players and it makes a fun environment but also so nice to hear a bit of a normal sports crowd. Sort of wanted Gaston to win but don't mind Thiem winning either- he seems a nice guy. Funny when he shouts at himself in German - you can tell it's German at 20 paces away and with the crowd yelling over him. 😀

Seemingly, Sascha's last Covid test was 30th September...... four days ago. Given how he was feeling, it was pretty irresponsible and selfish of him to play without having a further test. Yes it’s a shock that he didn’t have a test. My first thought was it was a way to save face after the match loss, by making a cold sound much worse, but I now realise how daft that was as he won’t get out of this easily. Not sure whether it was his fault or organisers for not taking temperatures, officially, at least once per day.

It's Thiem Schwartzman time. Really looking forward to it, but a bit worried for Domi. Hope he can do it :peace:

As an aside, why are all the adverts on ITV4 about death? I mean virtually all of them "Have you got life insurance"?, "Get your funeral arrangements in place", now "who will look after your cat when you die"? Bl**dy depressing. Not what I want when trying to enjoy the tennis.

Most tennis fans are of a certain age... Have you seen the BATS? :pirate:

That's probably it, but never known a channel be so blatant and relentless.

Excellent first set which Diego takes on the tiebreak. He's definitely looking the fresher of the two.

From a break down in the 2nd set it's Schwartzmann who now has the upper hand, well at least he's back on serve! Thiem now *3-4.

RosieBear

Thiem takes the second set 7-5. It's a real scrap. Whoever comes through is going to be really tired. Just hope Sinner can keep Rafa out there a good while.

Domi takes the 3rd on the tb (6). Titanic battle, nearly 3 and half hours and only 3 sets in. Mad.

What a battle!!!
Thiem takes the 3rd set 7'6(6) and needs just one more to make the Semi-Finals.

Some battle but Diego takes the breaker in the 4th and into a 5th set! Thought Dom would have found a way there, not really ideal- come on!

Oh my god, this is unbelievable. What a match. Into a decider. I'm a die hard Domi fan but the level both guys are producing means both deserve to win. Just going to sit back and marvel

What a battle!!!

He was 2 points away ..........

I've been out and they've taken all that time to play the 4th set!
Meanwhile the other Ladies 1/4 and Mens 1/4 are waiting .....
Surely they'll play one on Lenglen?

I imagine they'll stay under the roof as long as it takes.

Wow. Phenomenal. Best match I've seen in ages - first point to last. Always sad to see Domi lose, but he's got the US and was never going to get past Rafa after this on top of previous 5 setter. Can't begrudge Diego his first slam semi - my goodness he earned it today. Big congrats to him :clap::clap:

Good match and great victory for Schwartzman, well done. However disappointed that Thiem is out but did look to be a bit fatigued towards the end. of course not a lot of time between the slams. Nadal certainly with the advantage assuming he goes through later.

Another excellent RG match. I had no preference who won. Dominic seems such a nice guy and is a fabulous player. I can imagine him training with those logs in the Austrian forests but for the life of me I can't imagine him sitting in the barber's chair, tin foils et al having his blond highlights put in.

Jannik, 19 in his first French Open, served for the first set at 6-5 and was two points from closing it out against the King of Clay.

Didn't stay up after the first set as I thought it would go Rafa's way (inevitably). But Sinner yet another young player we'll be watching in the future clearly. (Was going to watch on itv catch up this morning but seems they don't put it on there - annoyingly)
