Coco Gauff ahead 3-0 in the first set against Jo Konta.
Now 4-1.

There are probably 10 people at the most watching this match ...

Not the best start for Johanna but thought this would be tricky match, come on!

Sallydaisy

Gauff serving for the first set *5-3 and takes it 6'3.
Let's hope Jo can regroup!

I get so frustrated watching Jo. I wish, just once, she'd scream, or bang her racquet, or...something. Anything.

Sallydaisy

Coco serving for the match.

JAMES4578
27-09-2020, 17:58
Afraid looks like Johanna not going to have a good clay court run this time, had early in break in 2nd but could not consolidate and Gauff regained control- has been better player and serving for it at 5-2. Tricky conditions but the same for everyone.

Sallydaisy
27-09-2020, 18:05
Coco d Jo 6'3, 6'3

JAMES4578

It was potentially tough draw but still disappointing from Konta and she did not cope with the conditions particularly well.

RosieBear
27-09-2020, 18:25
Shame to see Jo go out. It's very uninspiring conditions - cold, damp and crowdless. Must be miserable. I appreciate it's the same at both ends of the court, but particularly hard for a trailing player to find that something extra. (Tho Rodionov managed it!).

Stell
28-09-2020, 08:36
I heard Victoria Azarenka walked off the court, during her match, complaining it was too cold!! If she knew it was going to be like that, she should have done something about it beforehand.

JAMES4578
30-09-2020, 11:46
pity about the achillies, the match with Pironkova might have been interesting. Now a surprising result in live play, Vika Azarenka well beaten by Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-2,6-2! Whilst Svitolina had bit of tough time in 2nd with qualifier Zarazua before coming through 6-3,0-6,6-2,

Sallydaisy

Serena has withdrawn from 2nd Rd match v Pironkova (achilles problem again).
I understand the Achilles was a problem at the end of the US Open but she played on it in R1. Perhaps that caused it to flare up even worse? She has to stay off it as much as possible for 2 weeks and then 4 weeks rehab so that's her season done until the Ozzie swing in January 2021 (if there is one!).

(https://twitter.com/BastienFachan)No handshake/racket tap. Errani leaves the court shouting ‘va fanculo’ (no translation needed). Bertens comes back to her chair crying. Absolute scenes

Bertens won ...

Jose Morgado on Twitter: In a match with 24 breaks of serve, 5th seed Kiki Bertens saves survives her physical problems and the 2012 runner up Sara Errani, who had a MP and served three times for the match. Bertens wins 7-6(5), 3-6, 9-7 and Errani doesn't wait to the racket tap.

Wheelchair out on court to assist Kiki Bertens back to the locker room. Has been able to share some laughs with the trainers, showing them her hands stuck in cramp. Taking some pills from the doctor.

Errani coming in for comment from journos on Twitter:

Disgraceful from Errani. Kiki won the match and left on a wheelchair. Errani was pathetic for both her poor sportsmanship and ridiculous play. I hope she is fined and lose all prize money. What a bully and one who was not even being good at her job. Her serve was ridiculous.

Sallydaisy

I hope Gauff can beat the Italian she is playing (Trevisan) 'cos she's another screamer!!!
Gauff has a break in the 3rd set but is struggling to hold her own serve at *3-2 and is broken so it's 3-3 and all to player for between these two.

Sallydaisy
30-09-2020, 19:02
Emily Webley-Smith/Vivien Heisen lose to Alison Riske/Ajla Tomljanovic 6-2 6-3.

Sallydaisy

Coco out, the screaming Italian Trevisan took it 4-6, 6-2, 7-5

JAMES4578
30-09-2020, 19:38
Unfortunately Gauff goes no further after beating Konta, Trevisan takes the 3rd 7-5 having failed to serve it out at 5-3. Coco somewhat disappointing, two doubles in the last game.

Sallydaisy

This is how the Top Half 3R looks:
[1] Halep v [25] Anisimova
Bouchard v Swiatek
Trevisan v [20] Sakkari
Siniakova v [5] Bertens

[3] Svitolina v [27] Alexandrova
Garcia [16] Mertens
Schmiedlova v Podoroska
Krejcikova v Pironkova

Per Chris Clarey on Twitter: 2 Wild cards (Bouchard & Pironkova),
6 women ranked outside the top 100 (Bouchard, Trevisan, Schmiedlova, Podoroska, Krejcikova, Pironkova) & 16 of 32 seeds out.

Sallydaisy
02-10-2020, 10:44
Swiatek d Bouchard 6'3, 6'2.
Svitolina leads Alexandrova 6'4, 5'4. The Russian to serve to stay in the match.

No other R3 Ladies Singles yet in play. (rain?)

Only 13 of the Top 32 women's seeds have made it to the 3rd round. It's the lowest number of women's seeds to reach the 3rd round of a major since the introduction of 32 seeds at Wimbledon in 2001.

Sallydaisy
02-10-2020, 11:18

JAMES4578
02-10-2020, 12:57

Ostapenko struggling, down 4-6, 3-5 and now serving to stay in the match.
I confess I've never heard of her opponent, Spaniard Badosa Gibert.

Leylah Fernandez took a 5-1 lead in the 1st set but Kvitova won the next 6 games in a great fight back. The Canadian is now serving to stay in the match at 5-7, 3-5.
KVITOVA WINS!!! 7'5, 6'3.

Siegemund, Zhang, Jabeur, Kenin and Ferro are already through.

Muguruza v Collins could be a cracker!!!

JAMES4578

Petra Kvitova had relatively straightforward win over Shaui Zhang winning 6-2, 6-4 (though was broken when serving for match the first time), will face Laura Siegmund in the quarters who put out Paula Badosa 7-5,6-2. Sofia Kenin lost the first to another home player Fiona Ferrro 6-2 but won 2nd by same score and is currently a break up in the decider at 2-0. Kenin runs away with decider taking it 6-1.

Qualifier Podoroska (Argentina) d [3] Elina Svitolina 6'4, 6'4.

JAMES4578

Hmm ... from the Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2020/oct/06/french-open-womens-doubles-match-under-investigation-for-match-fixing

Police in France are investigating a possible case of match-fixing at Roland Garros during a doubles match on Wednesday 30 September. The match in question is Russia’s Yana Sizikova and American Madison Brengle’s first-round encounter with Romanian pair Andrea Mitu and Patricia Maria Tig. Mitu and Tig eventually won 7-6 (8), 6-4.

According to a report (https://www.welt.de/sport/article217095224/French-Open-Frauendoppel-unter-Manipulationsverdacht-Polizei-ermittelt.html) in the German newspaper Die Welt on Monday, hundreds of thousands of euros were bet on a break of serve in the fifth game of the second set of the match with the score level at 2-2. Sizikova was serving and she was culpable for three of the points conceded as she lost her serve to love.

Match fixing! We know it goes on but am disgusted if it is still happening in tennis. We will just have to wait and see if it's true. What a great day of tennis yesterday. Happy for Diego but thought Dom might have a better chance with the big boys. We've had so many surprises who is to say we won't have more. I am thoroughly enjoying it even without Andy.

Thoroughly enjoyed. Much prefer Swiatek's tennis to Kenin's. Wondered how injured the latter was. She'd worn strapping all through the tournament. Uncharitably I suspected medical time out may have been a tactic. By the time she realised it hadn't worked and upped her game again it was too late. Well done Iga!

I'm delighted for Iga Swiatek - what a star she's proving to be.
:trophy:

She's played well throughout the tournament, not dropped a set (which is difficult for anyone at a Slam let alone a player with less experience of Slams), beaten top players and shown that a game with lot of variety can work - even on the heavy clay at RollyG. I'll bet all of Poland is delighted for her and I hope she and her team have a jolly good time celebrating before Paris goes into another lockdown!!!
