View Full Version : Things that really annoy us

Have wanted to start this thread for ages. Don't want to seem like a grumpy old woman but sadly I will. In fact, I am!! I will begin with people who when talking end a statement sentence as if it's a question. Drives me up the wall!!

Really? I totally disagree on that one. I can't stand it when someone states their opinion in a very emphatic way as if it's the only correct opinion. I much prefer it if the tone of voice at the end suggests, 'do you agree?'

However there are a lot of things that do annoy me! When I used to work in the centre of town the thing that annoyed me the most was when I popped out of the office at lunchtime to buy a sandwich, only to find that there was a long queue made up mainly of people who could have shopped at any other time - young mums with children, retired people, etc. Why on earth would they not choose to shop when it is less busy?

And the thing that annoys me most of all is people not dipping their headlights when driving. My eyes are very sensitive to light so it totally blinds me. Not only cars coming towards me, but cars immediately behind me, where the light bounces off my mirrors and all around inside my car. Unfortunately in this area there seem to be a great many drivers who never dip their lights!

Husbands who don't listen. We had a detailed conversation yesterday about him taking my car for tyre changes today. I said I needed my car for pilates this morning cos it's my turn to drive. He said that was fine he'd either go very early or when I got back. So this morning he says about 45 mins before I'm due to go out - you're not doing anything today are you? When I reminded him (admittedly in frosty tones) that I was, he got grumpy at my tone and also because after the tyres he wanted to straight to the golf range to pracitce (very important of course). Anyway a few cross words later and he's flounced off. I'm taking his car instead (hate driving it - or more importantly getting it out of the garage - too big!).......men!

Once upon a time we decided to all go to Tesco as a family. Half way down the 2nd aisle my wife looked at me and asked if I was thinking the same thing as her. Since then, other than going for a few things when we're out elsewhere, I keep the kids at home lol. The eldest (17) is fine apart from picking dear things to go in the trolley. The other two (9 and 6) are fine indivually but a nightmare together!

I know what you mean RL, some stickers SOOO hard to peel off clean. Thankfully books here easy peal and leave nothing behind. DVDs the same too. It usually everything else leave sticky stuff behind.

Already put this on fb but putting it on here anyway. Yesterday when clearing away after party the previous evening found out that one of our kitchen drawers is broken. The side has completely come away from the base. We knew immediately how it had happened. One of our guests, a retired teacher I used to work with, is a total wine snob!! Not only wine but corkscrews!! He had dismissed the usual type and asked for the insert and pull. Without waiting for me or husband to get it he started opening drawers. One of the drawers is difficult and has to be opened gently. Husband spotted him tugging and wrenching and told him to stop. The corkscrew he preferred was in the cutlery drawer. He must have replaced the drawer without telling us that he had practically destroyed it. I am so annoyed with him. He drank copious amounts of red wine and used about four different glasses and was quite drunk. He's had his last invitation I can tell you. The kitchen is quite old, installed when my almost 47 year old daughter was in UVI, but people should respect other people's property.

That really is a pain in the neck SG and you're quite right to miss him off the list next year - how rude to go opening drawers in someone else's house! I would find it difficult to be civil on next meeting.

We had a difficult situation at our Christmas 'drinks and nibbles' party last year. Two of our neighbours got absolutely plastered on punch - she became very belligerent and started picking arguments with all and sundry and he started to get very 'touch feely' - neither went down well with the other guests. However, there was worse to come - they insisted on driving home. Now they don't live far away - probably a fifteen minute walk at most and my son - who doesn't drink - offered to drop them off and collect them to pick their car up the next day. They weren't having any of it and drove home absolutely smashed. We were furious - our roads are very quiet but they could easily not only have written themselves off but a car load of other people and that's saying nothing about the wildlife! After much soul searching we didn't invite them this year but in a small community like ours - as you can imagine - that hasn't gone unnoticed either by them or by others - a difficult one!

A "friend" once tried to report me for assault when I stopped him driving home (physically blocked him and took his keys). Fortunately the next morning he had little or no recollection and actually thanked me when someone else told him what had happened. As for the "touchy feely" bit - I would have thought a "quiet word" was in order!

facebook's privacy settings... that when I set it to show things to Friends Only, not Acquaintances (and set a particularly obnoxious mare as an acquaintance - Supergran - THIS was the person I meant last night on Twitter/FB)
I can't block her as it may affect a friendship with another mate (we three met on holiday a few years back) and I have no issue with the other girl (and seemingly she seems to be able to juggle both friends with no issue)...
BUT... FB seems to ignore the fact that:
1) I have marked the irritating cow as an acquaintance
2) I have set up Selective Tweets to only post anything from Twitter as visible to Friends and not acquaintances
and yet still she seems to see stuff and comment.

What is the point of constantly messing with the security options if any damn person can see anything anyway???!!!!

OK, "rumfled"? What a great word.

Yup! It comes from my Mum - one of those genius words that just completely gets across what you're trying to say :)

Edit: at least, I thought it was! Re-reading your post, I'm now thinking you didn't get what it meant  It's basically like rumpled, but soft and sort of lumpier, if that makes sense? You know when you crawl into a nice clean bed, and just as you settle down you realise there's a lumpy bit round your ankles where the duvet has kind of folded over itself inside the duvet cover? That's a rumfle :big grin:

It's impossible! :grrr:

TOTALLY!!!!
I stupidly detached my double duvet (winter and summer togs) and for some reason that completely defeats me, I had the summer one, and subsequently have shivered all through April until THIS week when I finally had enough of sleeping under an ineffectual pillow case, and reverted to the winter tog one.
Result: Rozzie sleeping like a baby for the last two days!

The whole inside out thing kinda works for me... but lumpy duvet-itis is an issue.

I do remember several years ago Dave was putting our duvet back in it's cover, taking ages and swearing profusely during the process - and when he'd finished there seemed to be a partucularly large rumfle at one end - turned out to be one of the cats who'd crawled in while trying to "help"!

I do remember several years ago Dave was putting our duvet back in it's cover, taking ages and swearing profusely during the process - and when he'd finished there seemed to be a partucularly large rumfle at one end - turned out to be one of the cats who'd crawled in while trying to "help"!

Actually, with hindsight, it's just as well he hadn't tried Sally's shaking-down-stairwell approach :big grin:

We use that word too!!! Says it all. I too hate changing the duvet cover so we use a pair of sheets and I change those more regularly than the duvet cover.

But using sheets, you don't get the benefit of the duvet. My Mum used to do that, have a topsheet with the duvet on top so that she didn't need to change the duvet cover so often. But when I stayed at her house I felt cold in bed because the duvet didn't wrap around me.

Hmm..........on the other hand I like the "tuckedinness" of sheets and then the weight of the duvet on top.

Aaaargh can't stand tucked in sheets. If I go to a hotel and it's sheets & blankets the first thing I do is untuck them all round (especially at the foot end) or I won't sleep.

Today I tried Sally's method of dangling the duvet over the stairwell (having first checked that the dog* was not hiding inside). It worked a treat. Thanks, Sally!

*nb by 'the dog' I am of course referring to our snorkie, Dantie, and not to Alexandr Dolgopolov.

I always wash the cover outside in so that when it's folded it is easy to take the top corners
place them on the corners of the duvet hold it together then shake it down, the open ends then
end up at the bottom right side up and voila job done

Nothing short of a disgrace that Becks wasn't included. A popular figure within the changing room, also when you think about the role he played in bringing the olympics to London. Mind you Pearce is a plank same man who made Parker captain in a friendly over Gerrard!

Saying it once, maybe. But I think that point is very flawed since the supposedly GOAT should not have a negative record against other players. Besides, who knows if he would've been as great if he was 5 years younger.

DaveArneRiise
09-07-2012, 12:16
Perhaps so, one thing for sure though is that he is among the greatest. He gets a lot of stick for being smug but he himself also brushed off talk off being the GOAT saying "it's hard to compare different generations." People should appreciate what a great player he has been instead of becoming so bitter about it. It's just embarrassing to be frank. As is that tiresome psuedo fed blog, would people find it funny if it was Murray being poked fun at?

Certainly not smug in the slightest in that interview. Nice words about Andy too.seems to be a word you use a lot when people dont conform to your viewpoint, so as we are repeating ourself il say again sport(to me and many others) is all about rivalries and being able to knock your favorites biggest rivals is all part of that, so if its aright with you(or not)i will continue to follow sport my way

I think it was actually the Australian Open because Laver was there consoling him ... and the reason he was raining on his parade, was because he didn't want to speak first. And (rightly, IMO), Rafa gave him time to compose himself and then do his speech first, so that he could rightfully speak afterwards as the Champ.

Andy took a while to get the whole speech out, and it was good I think that Sue let him take the microphone...

My brother(s) seem to be plugged in to their MP3s and IPods all the time. So irritating when I ask him/them to help me with something; they'll help me, but they're off in a world of their own. Worse when they're walking down the street. They're teenagers, they've got their life ahead of them; why do they risk being run over?

And I know I'm a very backwards 21 year old, and I don't use Twitter, Facebook, etc., so I don't understand, but WHY do some people need to shove their life onto the Internet? I'm not against social media, it's very useful, but when I peek over my mum's/brothers' shoulders, some of the posts seem so inane. I seem to spend most of my time seething with annoyance lately :grrr:

Yesterday I had to wait in for the BT engineer to come. At 4.30pm I phoned to make sure he was coming and they told me that he had been and they connected me at 2.10pm! :grrr: :grrr: :grrr: And for some unknown reason, it takes another 7-10 days to get broadband (I have no idea why they can't do both at the same time).

Last week I had an aerial man come out to install an aerial in the loft and connect up the cable from my sitting room. But he couldn't find the cable in the loft. So Barratts sent out two electricians today (more time off work ) to find the cable. There are four TV points in my house but guess what, they couldn't find any of the cables in the loft. They phoned the guy who did the wiring and he said he definitely put them in, and the cables were all rolled up in the loft. But they are not there now  The electricians couldn't believe it. They checked behind one of my TV points and there is definitely cable there, but it does not go up to the loft. The electricians said that it seems as though someone has stolen all of the cable  So they are now going to have to put cable up on the outside wall of my house :grrr:

Have I told you about the plumbing? One of the cisterns has not been filling properly since we moved in. They have sent a plumber out twice but it still isn't cured. The first time he came, he discovered that the water into the cistern had been turned off because it was leaking! :grrr:

And that is nothing to the parking. I was assured before going ahead with the purchase that we would be allowed to park our third car in front of our double carport. I would not have bought the house otherwise. A few days after we moved in, a man knocked on the door and told me that if I was parked there tomorrow I would be fined £100! He was putting up notices to that effect all over the estate - he affixed one to my carport without asking my permission :grrr: That took an anxious week of phone call and emails to resolve.

So I was in a right temper today - the business with the TV cables was just about the last resort. And then I got a routine phone call from Barratts to answer a survey about how my purchase had gone! The poor guy - I really let rip - I gave them bottom marks for everything and gave full details of all my complaints. I know that my neighbour who moved in a couple of weeks before me has had loads of complaints too, so the poor guy probably has to take loads of flack 24/7. I feel quite sorry for him actually.

But I am still angry :grrr: :grrr: :grrr:

He noticed that Supergramps was holding his pass in case tickets were checked and asked about it. He then said he was looking forward to getting his in about 20 years! Noticing he had a European accent I asked him where he was from and he told us he came from Barcelona but had lived here for 20 years. I asked why he had left a beautiful city to live in Huyton and he replied that the system was better here. Asking him what he meant he told me that it was better for houses and benefits. I then asked him what he did for a living and he told me that he was on the dole and hadn't worked for 22 years. I was really angry with him but kept it hidden as I said we had worked hard for our bus passes. To my astonishment he said that nobody had forced us to work, it had been our choice!! I then said there were jobs...he could work in a pub or restaurant or a call centre or drive a taxi and he said, smiling, that he didn't want to work. I wondered what qualifications he had or what training he'd had and the cheeky blighter told me.......shop-lifting!! He got off at Lime Street, Liverpool and strode down the platform no doubt going shop-lifting!!

He got off at Lime Street, Liverpool and strode down the platform no doubt going shop-lifting!!

People like that annoy me so much too. However, in this day and age of PC madness, we are probably both racist!

he was probely a model citizen before he moved to liverpool ;) Huyton is quite far from the city in the Borough of Knowsley. I did a teaching practice near Huyton and one morning we arrived in the staffroom to find a window boarded up as it had been broken........and the large carpet (not fitted) had been stolen.

I have been trying for the past hour to watch Channel 4 live online (the aerial man still hasn't been back). But I just keep getting a message that says "Insufficient broadband speed detected. This may cause interruptions to your live stream and affect any live interactivity" but then I can't get past that so can't watch it at all. :grrr: My broadband speed here is half what it was in my old house but it shoudl still be enough to watch live streams (I now get 6mbps whereas I previously had 12).

I went out for a meal with a friend at Carluccio's last night. Had a lovely meal but I passed out due to the flickering candles (I'd blown out the one on our table but the whole place was shimmering with the flickering). And no, I wasn't drunk - I didn't have any alcohol as I was driving. Why do all restaurants have to have candles these days? :grrr: Some of them even have them in the loo! I think I shall only be able to go out for meals at lunchtimes and avoid restaurants altogether in the evenings.

Really fed up.

1. Just found out that Eurosport have charged me for a THIRD month even though after I found out that they had charged me for a second month I sent them an email telling them I had cancelled. Have sent another email and also a message to their support on their site. :grrr:

2. My broadband is only half the speed it was at my old address even though I'm only 800m from the exchange. I was told that they would be introducing fibre optic shortly to this area and I would be able to get a much faster speed with that. Just found out that the exchange was enabled and the new green boxes were put in a few months ago so it has been available in my area for a couple of months or so - but not to me (or presumably any of my neighbours), because I am too far from my green box. So there's no way I can get faster internet :grrr:

This is an old thread but I thought I resurrect it as one of my biggest annoyances happened to me today. I absolutely hate it when the is a traffic jam and people skip through the queue to push in at the end. I queued for 45 minutes today as people kept skipping down the line and pushing in the front. Had they simply joined futher back or even pushed in where there was a space it would have kept stopping the traffic. But no, it was stop start over and over. As if that wasn't bad enough when I FINALLY got towards the road I was attempting to join, (happy that the hatches the other side of meant no one else would push in and at least I'd be getting On my way) some jerk in a bm tried to push in after driving across the hatches. There was no room, so he beeped me (!) to make it clear he ended on trying to push in. When I just ignored him and carried on up the road, he shouted at me! It's one thing to push in, it's another dive accroas blocked of hatches to try and join a road on a bend when there is no room, and worse still to them scream at everyone else when it doesn't work. Admittedly I'm a nervous driver, after driving alone for a 16 months my fit bit still thinks I'm excersing when I'm driving, because of my heart rate. However this kind of thing does not help. It took me 50 minutes to do a 7 mile journey, and it was because of selfishness rather than traffic. What I find mad is that people would push into a queue on foot so why do it whilst driving?

I wholeheartedly agree, Jerry, that it is extremely annoying when cars whizz down the wrong/closed lane and push in at the front. It happens all the time and drives me mad.

I also agree with those who find Djoko annoying!

AllyB

But the lane isn't closed until the very front so why not use it. I seem to remember reading years ago that using both lanes and merging in turn is the most efficient way at roadworks but unfortunately in this country everyone seems to dive for the inside lane with about 3 miles to go.

JerryD
10-09-2016, 21:03
It wasn't a closed lane or road. It's a slip road. I was on the boulevard and pulled off onto the slip road to join the expressway. Because of a roundabout at the top and roadworks futher down the expressway, the slip road ends up full of queueing traffic trying to get on the expressway. What these people do is drive down the boulevard cut across the hatch markings That mark the end of where you can pull of to join the slip road, push in the front of the queue. Regardless as to whether there is space, which generally there is not. Then trying to join they park in a live lane and create a traffic jam in one lane of the boulevard. This results in Lorries and traffic moving into the middle lane going slow and creates massive jams in every direction. I've been stuck in it when it's backed up towards town because two lanes end up still, stuck on the slip road while people try to push in, and when not pulling off on to the slip road but carrying on, stuck behind traffic that is in the middle and the right because the left has become unusable. It creates more traffic into town, down to the 56 and up to the 62 and 57 then creates gridlock.
