I saw just the last few games of that - some incredible hitting by both but glad Thiem won!

That was an interesting interview with Andy.
Oh! What was he saying?

exislander
17-11-2020, 19:06
Oh! What was he saying?

The gist of it was that he is changing his training etc to get his body in shape to avoid the problems he had in America after matches. He fully intends to play and win matches on the tour next year. Tim thinks he can win tournaments but another slam unlikely, Daniela seemed to think he could get back to top 10.

A great match this afternoon between Nadal and Thiem. Dominic won 7-6, 7-6 ...... well done him!

Thiem is a very complete player across all surfaces isn’t he. Although hard surface isn’t Nadals favourite, the fact that Tiem has beaten him so much on so many surfaces is impressive.

Certainly the best match this week between Thiem and Nadal, glad Dom won though . Whilst Rafa has not had his best results indoors (though long seasons may have been factor in past) Dom really was impressive- good to see! Interesting now between Tsitsipas and Rublev, Stefanos stormed through first 6-1 but dropped 2nd 6-4 and 3-4 in 3rd. Disappointing for Salisbury/Ram. Koolhof/Mektic were strong in 2nd but Joe/RaJeev did fall away.

Rublev came back from 2-5 to 6-5 after 25 point rally but double faults on mp! Stefanos took advantage taking breaker 8-6, became intriguing!

Djoko carefully avoiding the potential semi against Rafa...

JAMES4578
18-11-2020, 22:46
Mind you Medvedev was still pretty impressive in a 6-3,6-3 win, the wnnner of Djokovic v Zverev will advance to semis. The German ended the hopes of Diego Schwartzman 6-3,4-6,6-3.

There's a delay to the afternoon match between Dominic Thiem and Andrey Rublev because of a power failure that is affecting the main broadcast feed from the court. (per Stu Fraser on Twitter)

Joe and Rajeev are playing a must-win match against Krawietz and Mies.

Krawitz/Mies broke early and served for the set at 5-4, but Joe and Rajeev broke back and are now up 6-5.

Nadal reaches the semis getting past Tsitsipas 6-4,4-6,6-2. The spaniard lost his serve for first time at end of 2nd but after three consecutive breaks at start of 3rd he took control. Stefanos not consistent enough.

JAMES4578
20-11-2020, 18:39
The singles semis are set: Djokovic v Thiem, Nadal v Medvedev. Nole in better form today (though did not have a similar challenge really) Zverev did not have the best of starts and unable to capitalise on any of the 3 break points- Djokovic taking it 6-3,7-6(7-4).

Due to Granollers shoulder injury he was forrced to retire with Zeballos at start of 1st set TB, it counts as a straight set win though for Melzer/Roger Vasselin. Unfortunately Soares/Pavic now out (3 teams on 2-1). https://www.nittoatpfinals.com/en/news-and-media/news-articles/2020/11/20/granollers-zeballos-melzer-roger-vasselin-nitto-atp-finals-2020-day-6-finals

Just the one break thus far but Thiem making it tough for Djokovic (even if not great deal in it). Novak holds for 6-5 in 2nd, come on Dom!

A few errors but Dom finds a way to save 2 set points (wih some help) to take it to the Breaker.

Hawkeye
21-11-2020, 15:53
Nole blows 2 set points, tie break.

Speedy Hawk
21-11-2020, 16:11

JAMES4578
21-11-2020, 16:12
Bit of a nervy breaker, Thiem missing match points (that double was costly) and Djokovic eventyally taking it 12-10, into the 3rd!

About tonight's doubles. If Ram/Salisbury win tonight then they finish the season as no.1, if they don't win then Pavic/Soares finish their partnership as no.1 pair for the year.

Hawkeye

Tie break to settle it, which I guess is fair.

Thiem choking. Shame.

JAMES4578
21-11-2020, 17:00

Hawkeye
21-11-2020, 17:03
Except suddenly Nole looks vulnerable. Back on serve!

JAMES4578
21-11-2020, 17:04

Hawkeye

JAMES4578
21-11-2020, 17:07

JAMES4578
21-11-2020, 19:07
Ram/Salisbury impressing , hopefully can keep it going! Rajeev/Joe now up 2-0 in 2nd.

Hawkeye
21-11-2020, 19:13

Sallydaisy
21-11-2020, 19:24

21-11-2020, 20:01
oh no Melzer/RV take it 11-9, they stepped up but one that got away from Rajeev/Joe (in a dominant position) -such a disappointment. . Still Ram/Salisbury had good year.

RosieBear
21-11-2020, 20:03
How absolutely gutting. Poor Joe and Ram :crying::crying::crying: It's a double-edged sword getting a big lead in a tiebreaker. The leading player/team feels the pressure to protect it, and the trailing player/team let RIP because they've nothing to lose, they level then the momentum takes them over the line. Happened with Domi against Novak which I was pleased about, happened in the dubs and I'm soooo disappointed. The no 1 and final was right there!:sad::sad:

Sallydaisy
21-11-2020, 20:03

JAMES4578
21-11-2020, 22:10
Nadal and Medvedev into a deciding set. Nadal broke for 5-3 in 1st after the Russian missed all his first first serves and took in next game. Danil got off to strong start in 2nd but looked to be faltering when Nadal came back from 1-4 to 5-4 , however he broke to love when Rafa served for match and took breaker 7-4.

Good quality tennis in the 3rd but Medvedev more on the offensive and takes crucial break for 4-3 on Nadal's 2nd serve and breaks again to take final set 6-3, well done! Commentators mentioned Rafa had slight limp towards the end but may not have been too significant.

JAMES4578
22-11-2020, 17:10
Koolhof/ Mektic take the title getting past Melzer/Roger- Vasselin 6-2,3-6,10-5. Not the most thrilling one but good Doubles. First title for the pair in their season together, well done Wesley/Nikola! Good tournament for Jurgen/Edouard too!

Sallydaisy

Speedy Hawk

Watch whole match. Was interesting. Thought Thiem going win it until near end 2nd set (before tiebreak) it was even and finally 3rd set Medvedev was better.

Jan
22-11-2020, 21:35
I enjoyed that! Would have liked Thiem to win but credit to Medvedev for hanging in there and fighting to the end. Thought Thiem missed a few shots towards the end that he was making earlier on.
Refreshing to see two of the younger players contesting the final

JAMES4578
22-11-2020, 22:52
Thought it was a good final and good to see new contenders making their mark, credit to Medvedev for gutsy win.Nonetheless I was disappointed Thiem did not make it (particularly as he lost our last year too. However could not quite maintain the high level he had set in a few crucial moments. Still at least he has a slam!

RosieBear
23-11-2020, 15:10
Really enjoyed the final, I thought it was very high quality and find Domi's style so watchable. Like James, I wanted Domi to win but give credit to Danill. It's nice that Novak and Nadal wins aren't a foregone conclusion these days, because players like Medvedev and Thiem can genuinely compete at a very high and exciting level. Shame the tennis is over for this year, but roll on happier, healthier 2021 including a fired-up Andy
