View Full Version : Top 8 predictions for 2012- entry deadline 1st mens singles at the Australian Open
Year End Top 8 Predictions
Its that time of year to get your thinking hats on and predict the end of season top 8 - will Djoko hold off the challengers and have as amazing a year as 2011, will Rafa or Federer rise back to the top, will Andy prove all of us right and show the world he is capable of beating the best in 5 sets as well as 3, is there someone in the wings waiting to surpass even the rise Djoko had last year, will any of the big 4 fall out of favour and slip down out of the top 8 and who will make up the remaining spaces in that top 8 and in the process qualify for the 2012 WTF at the O2?
So all you have to do is predict the top 8 in the order you think they will finish. On top of this as a tie breaker you need to predict the total ranking points of the world number 1, world number 25 and our own Andy.
The scoring is you get
* 1 point for each person you correctly guess who ends in the top 8,
* a second point for that player if you have them positioned 1 place away from where they end up (eg you predict Andy as number 2 and he ends up as either number 1 or number 3 then you score 2 points for Andy) - you will also still score 1 point if the player you predicted in 8th spot ended up 9th despite missing out on the 1 point for that player not being in the top 8
* but you get the maximum 3 points for each player you predict in the right spot.
So the maximum points are 24 for getting all 8 in the top 8 and getting them all in the correct order.
If we end with a tie under this main scoring system then it will be the closest person to the correct total tie break score. in the unlikely event that the tie break is also tied then it will be the person predicting closest to Andy's ranking points, then the number 1's ranking points and if this has still not broken the tie break it will be a tied competition.
So the perfect prediction for 2011 would have been as follows
1 Djokovic 13,630
2 Nadal
3 Federer
4 Murray 7,380
5 Ferrer
6 Tsonga
7 Berdych
8 Fish
25 1,430pts
which would give your tiebreak total as 22,440
The deadline for entry is start of the first mens singles match of the Australian Open.
Champion of champions scoring
As well as the main end of year prediction we will have 7 other times during the year when the top 8 will be measured and scored for our overall champion of champions competition. The measuring points will be such that between each there is either a slam or 2 or more masters events to allow a reasonable potential for movement within the top 8. The scoring points will therefore be the rankings produced after Australian Open, Miami, Rome, French Open, Wimbledon, Cincinnati, US Open and the end of season rankings. As it is silly to use an end of season prediction where all positions are completly open but for example we already know Djokovic will still be word number 1 after the Australian Open you are allowed to enter different predictions as the season moves along. So if you wanted to you can predict up to 8 different top 8s plus tie breakers for each of the different scoring points through the season but to keep it manageable I would suggest that 3 or 4 different entries is probably sufficient to allow you to predict the movements over the season. If you do decide to give more than the 1 entry please be explicit as to which events each of your top 8s is to be used to score for (for example your first top 8 could be "up to and including Rome", your next "up to and including Wimbledon", and a third "up to including end of season")
Summary
So all you need to do to enter is make your prediction of the year end top 8 together with the ranking points for number 1, 25 and Andy with your entry submitted before the first mens singles match at the Australian Open
If you want to improve your chances for champion of champions then predict the top 8 and the tie breaker maybe 2, 3 or 4 (or if you really want 5, 6, 7 or even 8) times during the year again with entries submitted prior to the start of the Australian Open
Good luck on your predictions.

I see that the people who have entered so far have only entered one prediction - so this will be used at each of the 7 points during the year as well as at the year end. But as Yorkie pointed out, no-one can overtake Nole at AO - so surely it's better to do different predictions for the different points in time! (Going off to think about my 8 predictions now . . . . )

Oh sphericals.........can't be bovvered, so I'll leave it at the one!
you don't have to do all 8, but by Evan just adding one extra to cover aus you increase your point scoring opportunity's

Pabbers - you have gone to the trouble of doing 2 entries so please let me know which time points to use each of them as your directions are unclear. I would suggest the easiest thing is for me to use your first suggestion for the first 4 points to end of RG and your second for the last 4 but feel free to direct otherwise. Also tie break numbers on your first entry would be helpful as otherwise you will be bottom of the people on the same points. If you don't want to think about maybe just use the points as they were at the end of 2011
Hfwardhouse - you have missed off points for the person in 25th place on your second pick for post Rome and RG
We could do with quite a few more entries or there is a danger of not being enough entries for this to count for CofC (my thoughts nothing official)

Sorry Yorkie - not very good at complicated stuff with numbers in it! Yes - first is to end of RG and second for the last 4. EDIT to say - just been back and now I'm really confused - I said my second one was for after US open so by default the first one must be everything up until then. I've said it's till (including) Wimbly, so hopefully that does it?I'll edit to put a tiebreaker in now.
