Rome is the back-to-back Masters following straight on from Madrid.
There's something of a change in atmosphere and playing conditions, even though on the same surface of clay, due to the cooler high altitude of the Spanish capital compared to the warmer climes of middle Italy.
It's a 64-draw with the top 8 seeds having a Bye in R1 (as for Madrid).
Top seed is Djokovic. The Main Draw ceremony will be held on Saturday at 11:30am CEST.
British interest in singles is Dan Evans. Cameron Norrie is #1 seed in Qualifying and he's 4th Alt should there be withdrawals before the main draw.

A lot of matches planned for today
No real upsets though apart from MeddyBear losing to compatriot Karatsev.
(and in the Ladies event Podoroska beating Serena Williams in R2).
Qualifier Delbonis did well to beat 12th seed Goffin.
oop for Thursday - https://www.atptour.com/en/scores/current/rome/416/daily-schedule
Andy/Liam 4th on court 2.

Meanwhile Shapovalov is giving Rafa trouble (or was ...)
The Canadian romped the first set 6'3.
Rafa took the 2nd 6'4.
Shapo had a 3-1 lead in the 3rd but Rafa has broken and levelled it to 3-3.
The other Canadian in action, Felix Auger-Aliassime, lost to Federico Delbonis (Qualifier) who took it 7'6, 6'0

Shapo just had his 3rd match point against the Rafa serve, saved by the Spaniard.

Missed opportunity as Nadal takes it 3-6,6-4,7-6 (7-3) However doubted Shapovalov would prevail when it went into Breaker, a test for Rafa though.

What an absolutely brilliant match between Thiem and Sonego. Normally I'm a die hard Domi fan but lovely for the Italian to progress in his home tournament. Just a shame the fans couldn't stay in the arena for the conclusion - they would have been going mad. Fabulous entertainment.

Agreed, it was a treat to see such a competitive match and not be biased!

I was still for Dom though Sonego had great performance, Thiem though has had a few setbacks this seaon (though obviously had a break).

Nadal has romped to a 4-0 lead against Zverev in the 1st set of the QF.
However, the German has just broken back and is now serving at *1-4.
Early doors .....
Opelka won his QF match beating (Qualifier) Federico Delbonis 7'5, 7;6(2)
Still to play:
[1] Djokovic v [5] Tsitsipas (follows straight after Nadal v Zverev)
[7] Rublev v Sonego, not before 6pm UK time on Grandstand
Sallydaisy
14-05-2021, 11:44
Nadal took the first set 6'3 and has just broken Zverev to nudge ahead 3-2 in the 2nd with his serve to come next.

Rafa wins 6'4, 6'4 after Zverev failed 3 times to break back in the final game.

Not quite the match I had hoped for even if a few tight games, though Nadal playing at a higher level. Zverev just could not take chances in the 2nd, mind you thought it might be a bit different from last week.

Fantastic morning of tennis. Novak squeaked through a very high quality encounter against Stefanos and the wonderful Sonego keeps up the home town heroics by beating Rublev. What a day for him and lovely the Italians have something to smile about. Keep going Lorenzo!

certainly exciting match between Djokovic and Tsitsipas though think Stefanos somewhat missed his opportunity. Another good win for Sonego but think it is unlikely there will be another upset later.
