British Ladies in R1 at Roland Garros, From Steven on Twitter (https://twitter.com/GBtennis):
Heather Watson has drawn Zarina Diyas KAZ WR 93 (CH 31 in 2015)
H2H 2-1, 1-0 on clay:
W in 3, Charleston Q 2010
L 0&3 Bĕijīng Q 2018
W 6&6 Fukuoka 2019 final
Johanna Konta has drawn Sorana Cîrstea ROU WR 20 (CH 4 in 2017)
Like Heather, she has a 2-1 (1-0 on clay) H2H against her first opponent:
W 2&3 Constanța (Fed Cup) 2017
W 2&2 Eastbourne 2017
L in 3, US Open 2020
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E2ZxfcBVEAQsBLl?format=jpg&name=large
Heather lost the first set to Zarina Diyas from a break up, but leads by a break in the second, *3-2.
Much like the first set, Heather has lost her break and is now serving to stay in the match at *4-5.
She staved off defeat that time, but not at *5-6.
Diyas wins 6-4 7-5.

Maybe not too surprising but pity Heather could not take advantage of her leads.
Naomi Osaka refuses to bow to pressure from tournament organisers to do press after matches, and withdraws from the French Open.

I hope she gets some help and is back on the tour soon

I realise there is more to Serena than her outfits, but wow sometimes it's hard to get past them. This green malarkey at Roland Garros!! What's with this skirt/handkerchief?

A pity it came to this and whilst maybe was not the best way to go about it understandable , taking about expulsion was not the best way forward. Naomi has stated she is now taking some time away from the game, so unlikely she will play Wimbledon. Hopefully she will get the support she needs.

I'm pleased Naomi Osaka is getting extra help. She seems like a really lovely person but when giving speeches/interviews she has always seemed to me immature to the point of being almost childlike. I've always found it frustrating that pundits described this as charming when it's not really healthy for a young woman to behave like a 13 year old. I hope she gets good support to develop confidence and composure. There are many shy, unassuming personalities on the tour who manage to conduct press despite public speaking not coming naturally to them, so I'm sure with help Naomi can get there.
Now Petra Kvitova falls to the FO curse...

Heather Watson and partner Anna Blinkova play 9th seeds Fichman and Golmos tomorrow, 4th up on court 10.

The childlike speech may be a result of fear and social anxiety. Depression is the big thing she needs help with first and getting on top of that will help her social anxiety which can then be tackled.
I always wondered what the impact of that hostile audience in 2018 was on her especially with being so young and playing against her idol. Lots of people do seem to struggle with their mental health after winning the big ones but what she experienced was really quite traumatic in 2018. And then on top of that she speaks out about issues that can mean she gets a lot of media attention.

Ash Barty injured, out of the French Open, down 1-6, 2-2.
No.1 seed Ash Barty was forced to retire from the French Open
due to injury in her second-round tie against Magda Linette

Sabalenka faltered, misfiring in the final set as she went down 6-4,2-6,6-0. Azarenka and Serena Williams through in straights. Meanwhile Russian player Yana Sizikova arrested over match fixing allegations at last year's event . https://www.eurosport.com/tennis/roland-garros/2021/french-open-tennis-russia-s-yana-sizikova-arrested-over-match-fixing-allegations-in-women-s-doubles-_sto8355222/story.shtml

With Serena Williams going down 6-3,7-5 to 21st seed Elena Rybankina only two top ten players remain, Sofia Kenin and defending champion Iga Swiatek who could meet in the quarter finals. Rybankina will next face 31st seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova who put out Vika Azarenka 5-7,6-3,6-2. https://www.wtatennis.com/news/2166931/rybakina-stuns-serena-to-surge-into-french-open-quarterfinals

Watched two women's dubs matches today. So great to see Bethanie and Iga come back to win!!! Alas, was not to be for Team Canada vs Team Czech. Great three setter tho'. Hope Leylah and Gaby play at Wimbledon. I can see them representing Canada at the Olympics.

semis tomorrow will be Zidansek v Pavlyuchenkova (who both came through tough 3 setters) and Krejcikova v Sakkari . Sakkari put out defending champion Iga Swaitek 6-4,6-4 today who was not at her best and took medical time out at start of 2nd, though Maria certainly played well. Krejcikova ended the run of Coco Gauff 7-6,6-3 after coming through tense first set in the breaker. Only one top 20 player left!

A dramatic semi as Barbora Krejcikova reached the final with a 7-5,4-6,9-7 win over Maria Sakkari. Sakkari had match point at 5-3 but Krejcikova with some great shotmaking and a gritty display fought back for the win, taking it on her 5th match point. Should have won earlier in that game but a bad call from the umpire! Some tense play but cetainly exciting in the final set. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova also aiming for her first slam got past Tamara Zidansek 7-5,6-3. https://www.rolandgarros.com/en-us/article/rg2021-day-12-recap-pavlyuchenkova-zidansek-sakkari-krejcikova

Glad to see Barbora Krejcikova take the title with a 6-1,2-6,6-4 win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (though would have been happy enough for the Russian). Could not match the drama/excitement of Barbora's semi but she was strong in the first , whilst Anastasia had the better form in the 2nd however she came through a good contest in the 3rd. Mind you the Russian had a slight leg injury sustained towards the end of the 2nd which was unfortunate. A bit of an emotional speech with Barbora's former mentor being the late Jana Novotna. https://www.rolandgarros.com/en-us/article/rg2021-pavlyuchenkova-krejcikova-final-report

So very happy for Barbora mainly coz Jana Novotna is one of my all-time fave players and I love how she honoured Jana's memory. Loved her speeches too. So refreshing. Can't wait for the doubles tomorrow!

Krejcikova does the double with Siniakova, they were too strong for Mattek Sands/Swiatek taking the title 6-4,6-2- well done! This was their 2nd French title as a team. Barbora and Katerina stormed into a 4-0 lead in the first set and possibly relaxed whilst Bethanie and Iga were able to make it more competitive. However given no second chances in the 2nd. Still a good tournament for Mattek Sands/Swiatek who have not played much together.
