FYI
Andy Murray, ranked 119, has taken the Olympic Gold Medallist/Grand Slam Champion quota place for the Olympics, where he is 2x defending champion. No Cameron Norrie or Jamie Murray.
Here is that (good) rule.

In this from January he seemed very undecided if he wanted to go.

I know Federer did want to go there and play until he lost to Hubert Hurkacz in the Wimbledon quarter finals. The sports reporter, on radio five live, made it sound like Federer was feeling a bit depressed.

In interviews earlier in the tournament (before the Hurkacz match) Federer said he has still to decide on Olympics, probably less likely now and sems that at best there be very limited crowds.

Another setback for Johanna - pity.
Cannot wait for the Olympics though. The last few days have been awful; rainy, post-Wimbledon blues, the football woes. The fun of seeing team GB in action, especially in the tennis where I have high hopes, is keeping me going.

Yes really looking forward to team GB! We'll be in the Lakes for the first week but I'm happy with that with the memories of standing in a street watching Andy beating Djokovic in 2012! Actually stood beside a man who said, smugly, just wait until he meets Federer in the final. I always wished I'd had his number  we're having gorgeous weather right now but never believe it will last!
Jo Konta out as she has had Covid.
Dan Evans out as he has now tested positive for Covid.

Great R1 win for Liam Broady, heat and humidity in Japan is awful.
I visited Tokyo in the late 90's for business in the 2nd week of July and there was a humid smog throughout the week which was very draining. The temperature didn't drop below 20 overnight and even an early morning walk at 5am was difficult. Osaka (day business trip) was a bit fresher but I spent most of my time in air-conditioned hotels, offices and taxis. TBH that made the outside air even more unbearable.

So pleased Stef won but he has Tiafoe in the next round who beat him at Wimbledon. Really good win for Kei. It would be great if he could go all the way on home soil.
Andy and Joe are not on tomorrow's schedule, but Jamie and Neal are third on Court 7 - probably about 7.00am (UK)

Olympics Mixed Doubles
There seems to be some confusion as to who is actually in this event. The ENTRY LIST (per this link (https://olympics.com/tokyo-2020/olympic-games/en/results/tennis/entries-by-event-mixed-doubles.htm)) is not yet finalised but simply lists those who have entered alphabetically by country which is why there are 50 names indicating there might be 25 teams. That is not the case.
This might help, it's from Steven (and others) on Twitter who is as thorough as ever:
Steven: Apparently the mixed doubles entry list isn't the list of pairs that will be in the draw as it was for the other events, so let's try that again ...
PaulMasterton: they've not made the draw yet! Not all federations have finalised their entries (Spain, Russia, Australia, Belgium...) and they are already barely in the top 16. Will be tough to get in
Steven: Tokyo2020 (correction) GB has two mixed doubles slam champions on the mixed entry list for the Olympics - Heather Watson and Joe Salisbury - but they aren't guaranteed a place in the draw yet
Annie Jean: Maybe they'll qualify with Joe being ranked in the top 10 similarly to how Andy and he made it into the men's doubles.
Steven: That would've been nice but I've just checked on https://event.itftennis.com/media/302284/302284.pdf (https://t.co/G4u28b9tta?amp=1) and it turns out to be simply the top 15 on combined rankings plus a host nation place with a limit of two pairs per NOC.
Steven: Heather and Joe are currently 15th on combined ranking (14th excluding the home team) so if more than one higher-ranked team enters between now and the deadline (03.00 BST tomorrow), they won't get in, but they'd be high on the alternates list even then

Certainly a few upsets with Donna Vekic getting the win over Sabalenks in 3rd set breaker , Osaka through convincingly whilst Svitolina and Pliskova won in 3. Djokovic, Medvedev and Zverev cruised in Men's event whilst Carreno Busta put out Cilic 6-4 in 3rd.

I must admit I was surprised that their combined ranking was low enough. The wait continues. Really hope they can eek in, mostly for Joe's sake as a doubles specialist - they're underrated and deserve every moment in the sun they can get :peace::peace::peace:

Yep, they'll have to hope for a LL spot.
I guess with Ash Barty and Iga Swiatek going out early in the Ladies Singles they thought to stick around and partner up with experienced doubles compatriots!!!
Barty/Peers could do some damage in the Mixed Doubles methinks, Swiatek/Kubot is an interesting one 'cos I think he's nearly twice her age but has so much more experience.
The Spanish (not ARG) pairing of Paula Badosa and Pablo Carreno-Busta might not do so well.
But in Mixed Doubles anything can happen!

The only upside after today's loss is that Andy tweeted (as on the match thread) "if this is the end of my Olympics journey". Meaning it might not be. Really hope Andy and Joe team up again for Paris '24. They are a brilliant team already, a bit more experience together over the next 3 years and they could be a real force to be reckoned with.
Just heard that Djokovic and Medvedev have managed to persuade the ITF to have tennis start times moved from 11.00am to 3.00pm to avoid the heat of the day. Too late for our guys, but could have made a difference.

Semi-finals
Nikola Mektić (CRO) Mate Pavić (CRO) v Austin Krajicek (USA) Tennys Sandgren (USA)

Big congrats to Sascha and kudos for keep pegging away despite the 6-1 first set. I know there will be a lot of gloating on here but I find the manner of this result sad. Wants it too much plus incredible pressure on his shoulders. Reminds me of the 2016 French Open final. First - congratulations to Zverev and Khachanov who have played very well to reach the Final and a chance for the Gold (and Silver) medal. Both have come up against tough opponents and fought through to the end with just one last hurdle to be crowned Olympic Champion.
Second - I do feel for Djokovic who had the best chance of his career to achieve the Golden Slam. Those who denied him the Olympic Gold chance in 2012 and 2016 deserved to be the Champions and there were others in the frame taking the Grand Slam titles regularly (Federer & Nadal) which made the Golden Slam almost impossible.
As Rosie says ... "Wants it too much" ... and that's sometimes been the downfall of many a player going for something they wanted so much that it affected their game on the day. The examples are too numerous to mention but those which come to mind are Andys' OZ Open chances for a Grand Slam win and Federer trying to win the French Open.
Nole may yet win the USO which would recompense for his disastrous exit last time.
And we'll have a different, less expected, Olympic Champion in this funny old year.

Personally I am happy for Sacha and it was some turnaround so hope he takes Gold now,he was mentally strong early in the 3rd too and really went for it. However recognise it was not the usual Djokovic in the 2nd half of the match and was struggling somewhat with the pressure so have some sympathy. However he may still win the 4 slams this season and still has a lot to be happy about this year, obviously tougher to beat him over best of 5. I am though quite pleased we will have a different winner this time.
