So disappointing after giving herself the best chance to compete and being in good form. Hope Andy is keeping clear.

Yes that is frustrating for Johanna, no alternative but bad news.

Katie Boulter comes from a set down to beat Danielle Lao of the USA. Her reward is a match against second seed Sabalenka in the second round, so hopefully Katie gets her turn on Centre.

Heather's match has been moved to Court 1.

JAMES4578
28-06-2021, 18:55
Heather has taken first set over Kristie Ahn 6-2, the winner faces Sloane Stephens who put out Petra Kvitova fairly comprehensively in the end 6-3,6-4.

Heather loses the second set on a tie break, and the roof is being closed.

JAMES4578

Unfortunately does not work out for Heather under the roof, loses tight final set 8-6. Thought she would come through that one.

Heather's last two matches have been defeats from winning positions. Swiatek at Eastbourne and now Ahn at Wimbledon. Disappointing, and disappointed for her.

Well done to Fran Jones, she lost but played well and seemed to start believing in herself just a little too late today.

Sad end for Serena. Will this be her last Wimbledon?

RosieBear
29-06-2021, 19:21
Serena and Mannarino both retired after slipping in the same place. Soooo relieved Andy stayed upright, he'd be so vulnerable if god forbid he went over. I know the grass courts can be greasy the first few days, especially with so much moisture in the air, but players shouldn't have to play on dangerous courts. Sort it out Wimbo!

JAMES4578
29-06-2021, 19:26
Sad moments and so tough or Serena, she slipped and received treatment for left ankle and whilst tried to continue it in the end was to no avail. Good effort from Fran but could not quite stay with Gauff. Felt so sorry for Mannarino too, whilst Federer was coming back he had put him under so much pressure. Really enjoyed the Ash Barty - Carla S-N match today. Good to see Carla go out on Centre Court in front of a great crowd. It's the least she deserves. I lvoe both their games. So crafty. You can tell they both excel at doubles.

Keeping my fingers crossed for Bianca and Leylah tomorrow.

JAMES4578
29-06-2021, 23:45
Yes enjoyable match between Ash and Carla, good to see Suarez Navarro one last time at Wimbledon and given appropriate billing. Barty looked pretty good, though probably should have finished in two but good Carla got some reward for her creative play.

Alize Cornet has just beaten 5th seed Bianca Andreescu, 6'2, 6'1.
Fabulous lob to seal the win for the Frenchwoman.

JAMES4578

A bit of a rout for Cornet, Andreescu a former Us Open champion but not a great deal of experience on grass.

Katie is still fighting. Sabalenka broke to serve at 2-1 up but Boults broke back.
2-2 going with serve.

JAMES4578

Unfortunately from 40-15 Katie broken again to go 3-2 down, though has been impressive performance overall. Sabalenka not that comfortable at times.

Sabalenka bulldozes her way to the first set 6-4. Ugh. C'mon Ons!

Ditto the 2nd. Sabalenka into the semi. Did the better player win...hardly. Grim.

Ash up next, hope she fares better.

JAMES4578
06-07-2021, 16:30
Was fairly tight in first set but Jabeur unable to counteract the power really, still good to see her making progress. Ash very much in control and seems all set for a semi against Angie Kerber (who has come back to form on the grass. The other semi between Sabalenka and Karolina Pliskova (who has won all her matches comfortably)

RosieBear
06-07-2021, 16:48
Ash through 6-1 6-3, never really troubled, to set up a semi final clash with Kerber, which should be a cracker (wish it was the final tbh) and hopefully provides the overall winner.

JAMES4578

Ash was pretty impresive, though Kerber had chance to take it to a 3rd and had poor start to Breaker. Wanted Barty to win though.

Sabalenka takes the first set 7'5. Can't watch it as too much screeching.

JAMES4578
08-07-2021, 15:35
Pliskova had moee chances (8 bps) but could not capitalise and became a bit frustrated at end of set, though has just broken Sabalenka for the 1st time to lead 3-2 in 2nd. Into a 3rd and Karolina with a break at 3-2.

The party isn't happening yet for Barty.
Took the first set 6-3, was down 1-3 in the 2nd but got to 6-5 and served for the match. Whereupon she played a loose service game and dropped serve.

Tue-break to decide the set or match.

Sallydaisy
10-07-2021, 14:50
Barty now up 4-1 but mainly due to errors at critical points from Plisky.
KP holds for 2-4.
Barty is so nervous and her 1st serve has gone MIA so it could still go either way.

Not a classic match, both so nervous, but great to see a match of 2 different styles and perhaps more to come from both.

Congratulations Ash Barty! Lovely person, lovely player, very happy for her. Pleased Karolina made it respectable if not a classic. I do hope she can overcome her nerves and get a slam one day. I don't love her game but, as an Andy fan, have so much sympathy for players lumbered with the best player not to have won a slam label. Andy rid himself of it and hope Karolina can too.

JAMES4578
10-07-2021, 16:16
It became a good contest if not a classic with some drama ,whilst Barty could have won in 2 glad it did go the distance in a way. Whilst both displayed nerves Pliskova was the more affected, however credit to Karolina for getting into it after such a poor start. Barty certainly has a more vared game which paid dividends for her and it does mean so much for her on the 50th anniversary of Evonne Goolagong's (as she then was) win. Think she is a credit to the game and engaging, well done! Pliskova has a powerful game and thought she would have had more success in slams but is not generally the most confident performer, perhaps she will find a way to deal with it better with perhaps more chances coming her way.

Agreed, not a classic match, but...a match with no MTOs or lengthy toilet breaks. And...no loud screaming or grunting. All that was very refreshing. There were some poignant moments which made this match memorable in it's own way. Well done to both girls. And of course, for me, Ash's kit was destined to win.

The Ladies Doubles Final is a bit of a cracker!!!
Vesnina/Kudermetova were serving for the match in the 2nd set but were broken.
Taken into a 3rd set by Mertens/Hsieh who have upped their game considerably.

Mertens/Hsieh win!!! 3'6, 7'5, 9'7

What a match, so close right the way through and I thought it'd go on all night.
Shame for Vesnina, who has played her heart out, and Kudermetova in her first Slam Final. But the Belgian/Taipei pairing produced some outstanding tennis to seal the deal.
