From Stu Fraser on Twitter: (https://twitter.com/_markpetchey)
Just been informed here that Jennifer Brady has withdrawn from the US Open (knee injury).
A boost for Emma Raducanu who will now play lucky loser Stefanie Voegele in the first round tomorrow. (this is the player that Jodie Burrage very nearly beat in the FQR!)

Harriet Dart loses to Caroline Garcia 6(6)-7 6-4 6-2 in the first round at the US Open.

Think she went off court for treatment after set 1.

Jennifer Brady, who withdrew prior to her R1 match against Raducanu at the US Open, is out for the rest of the season. According Chris Clarey on Twitter:
Jennifer Brady today in Manhattan. She was walking with her right knee taped & told me she is out for the rest of the 2021 season with plantar fasciitis and bone bruise in her knee. Tough break for Brady, a US Open semifinalist & Aussie Open finalist in last 12 months

Good on ya Leylah!!! Only 18! Incredible. Mind you, I don't think Naomi was at or even near her best but still. I hope Naomi is OK, she was fighting the tears in her presser and I felt so bad for her.

Certainly great win for Leylah but disappointed for Naomi. Did not expect her to be a top contender but hoped she would go further. I have heard Osaka talking about another break now having said that she only feels relief when she wins and not happiness whilst is very sad when she loses.

The 18 years olds reign ...
;)

Leylah Fernandez has beaten Angelique Kerber 46 76(5) 62 to reach the US Open Quarter Finals where she'll play Elina Svitolina.

Leylah, who turns 19 tomorrow, has now garnered back-to-back wins over 2 USO champions and former No.1s, Naomi Osaka and an in-form Angelique Kerber.

Russell Fuller: The US Open just peaked. Leylah Fernandez has now taken out Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber in the space of 48 hours. 19 tomorrow, a US Open quarter-final on Tuesday.
Steven: Tennis has been relying on the likes of Fed, Rafa & the Williams sisters for years, panicking about what's going to happen when they've gone but not doing much to prepare the way; suddenly none of those 4 are there & this is already looking like the most enthralling slam for ages

Quite a drama in the Krecijkova - Muguruza match ...(extracts from ESPN)

An upset Garbine Muguruza let Barbora Krejcikova know that she thought the eighth-seeded Czech was "unprofessional" by taking a medical timeout just as the ninth-seeded Spaniard had the momentum in the second set of their fourth-round match at the US Open.

Krejcikova beat Muguruza 6-3, 7-6 (4) in a match that didn't finish until after 1 a.m. ET Monday. There came some drama at the end as Krejcikova called for the medical timeout -- saying she wanted to see the trainer for a diaphragm issue -- after Muguruza had overcome a 4-0 deficit in the second set to take a 6-5 lead. When play resumed after the break, Krejcikova won seven points in a row. She also angered Muguruza by taking her time between points down the stretch, slowly walking over to her towel.

When the two went to briefly shake hands at the net, a clearly annoyed Muguruza told the reigning French Open champion she thought her behavior was "so unprofessional." When the match was done, Krejcikova stayed in her sideline chair, hunched over, until eventually leaving the court with some assistance.

"Listen, I don't really want to talk about this," Muguruza said when first asked about what happened late in the second set. "I'll let you guys judge what you think about this."

Krejcikova did not appear at a postmatch news conference. In comments distributed by the U.S. Tennis Association, Krejcikova said: "At the end, I was really struggling and I feel really bad right now. I don't really know what happened, but I couldn't breathe. I started to feel dizzy, and the whole world was shaking. It never happened to me before.''

The women's final is way more exciting and important to me than the men's at this point, which I think will be Djoko steamrolling over Meddy Bear, big fat yawn.

I mean, TWO teenager phenoms in the USO final - who would have thought??? And the American ESPN crew is soooo jealous that Coco isn't there. Yet.
