History girl ...
... whether she loses or wins the US Open title on Saturday 11th September,
that will always be a moniker attached to Emma Raducanu for being the first
Qualifer ever, male or female, to reach a Grand Slam Final.

She's a gem - and she's British.
:GBflag:

It seems right to have a thread for this match because it's so unusual in many ways.
- neither player is seeded
- both are still teenagers
- both born in Canada although only plays under that flag
- both were promising juniors but have flown under the radar since (mostly)

Question is ... which of them will hoist aloft the US Open trophy tomorrow?
:unclesam:

Sallydaisy

Here's some basic information on how they compare.
They've not met in any main tour WTA events, not ITF either.

In Juniors they met at Wimbledon 2018 in R2 and the honours went to
Emma with a 6'2, 6'4 win over the 11th seed Fernandez (JWR #13)
:peace:

Leylah Annie Fernandez CAN, age 19 (dob 6/9/2002), born Montreal, Canada.

I am sooooooooooooooooooo excited I can't even!!! I was hoping against hope that these two would make the final instead of the screaming bish bash boshers. And a Canuck vs a Brit, seriously could not be better. This - for me a British Canadian - is the most exciting women's final EVER!!!

I don't mind who wins but based on the overall performances I think Emma has a serious edge. Bring it on, ladies!

I’m just excited! It’ll be a long time, IMHO, before Emma’s record is broken and if she gets the win it can be only broken by someone younger

Beyond excited for both girls. Such a treat! I do think Emma has the edge but I'm just so happy to see a final that will make history and doesn't have Djokovic in it.

Emma 40-0* on the Fernandez serve, LF saves all for Deuce.

AD LF, and she holds. Great serving when needed.

1-1 in the 2nd set.

C'mon Emma!
:GBflag:

Sallydaisy
11-09-2021, 21:37
Fernandez breaks ...
Raducanu had game points but LF is hitting the ball harder and with more accuracy
in an attempt to win the 2nd set.

LF serving *0-30

JAMES4578
11-09-2021, 21:37
As can often be the case Emma came under pressure on her serve after having the chances and down a break, come on! A few great shots to get back to 2 all!

Sallydaisy
11-09-2021, 21:40
2-2
ER broke back, LF advantage gone for now.

Sallydaisy
11-09-2021, 21:51
ER holds for 5-2.

Let's not forget that LF has come from behind to win in previous rounds.
She won't give up ...
but ...

JAMES4578
11-09-2021, 22:01

*0-15
*15-15
*30-15
30-30
ER missed the net shot

*30-40 ...

The crowd want a lot more of this ...
... I'd like 3 points from Emma Raducanu

Sallydaisy
11-09-2021, 22:04
Emma has a knee scrape, needs to be taped because it bleeding.
LF looking sceptical but she isn't allowed to play on if there is fluid onto the court.

JAMES4578
11-09-2021, 22:08
All above board but what a time for a scrape to happen! Was under a bit of pressure there and may not necessarily be to Emma's advantage.

Sallydaisy

What a performance from Emma , certainly tested but came up with the answers and proved herself to be such a good atch player. Fernandez's route may have reduced her chances but still had impressive fighting spirit, did not react too well to the time out though! May have won the Us Open and had dream tournament but believe the best is likely still to come in years ahead, such great potential.

Sallydaisy
11-09-2021, 22:26
FWIW - Fernandez being miserable about the MTO was actually totally unfair and she deliberately rowed with the umpire in front of where Raducanu was sitting.

FACT IS: If it had been the other way around Fernandez, like Raducanu, would have been forced to take an MTO because the RULE is that you cannot play on with blood/fluids leaking onto the court which could cause a slip to either player.
She knows this so her continuing gripe to the Umpire was un-necessary and wrong.
But she might have just wanted to vent frustration - not surprising really.

11-09-2021, 22:28
Leylah Fernandez getting the NY crowd well behind her with that speech.

I just wish I'd had a fiver on Emma being the only qualie in history to win a major....with an ace on match point. Good grief, it's almost impossible to comprehend. She. Is. Simply. How awesome is it to have a British female win a slam once again??? I was 8 in 1977 and that was the year I started to watch tennis on our black and white telly. The year VW won. And now Emma has won in 2021. Incredible. And not to drop a set in the process AND go through qualies. Blimey!

Emma's interview is up on the USOpen website. Near the end she is asked what she is most proud of/what gave her most satisfaction during the tournament.
She replied that it was to shut everything else out of her mind and just focus on the next point and think about her patterns of play. That is also what she did during the medical time out.
That augurs extremely well for the future!
PS She also decided to dress up a bit for the interview as well! 1482

Canadian media reporting that the British girl took a medical time out which helped her refocus. Inference being that it was her choice (it wasn't) and that their player suffered as a result. Maybe if she'd just sat down and accepted it for what it was ( an enforced time out on health and safety grounds) she also might have been more focused for the restart.

Emma explicitly states in her official US Open interview that she wanted to carry on (did not want to serve cold a break point down) but the chair umpire told her it had to be cleaned up immediately. I hope no "what if" myths arise from this. I was a little disappointed in Fernandez's histrionics at this. I found her tenacity during the tournament admirable but I hope she can do that without a "winning at all costs" mentality. And... strategically.. if Emma and Laylah are to be a tennis couple destined to play each other many times, that show of histrionics ultimately shows a weakness to be exploited, once you are past the tenacity.
