It certainly is!!! That's my evening sorted from 17.45pm today.
AND hopefully more of the same from Metz next week which will also be at
a reasonable time for those in the UK (but not yet sure where it'll be shown ...)

Bit of a hold up for Andy because the prior match is into a 3rd set.
However, Pouille has just won!!! 5'7, 6'4, 6'3 against fellow Frenchman Janvier.
So, perhaps 10/15 minutes before Andy plays!

Andy drops serve, Safiullin going for his shots.
No doubt Andy will be the target to beat here - most of the other players are French!
So, we'll have to buckle up for the coaster ride.

Safiullin held for 3-0.

Not half!
Andy holds, from adv Safi! safi serving at 3 - 1
Rufiun holds, he really likes his droppers! and a lob to follow - where'd he get that from?
this is no time for a weak 2nd serve - that one came back with a perfect dtl

Looks completely out of sorts and off the pace. If he can up his game 10-15%, it might throw Safiullin off his game

Andy finally got going, hopefully a bit more straightforward now!
the Rufiun will serve first in this final set
and he's having a long toilet break, andy will love that
Andy finally finds some decent serving and takes the 2nd set! All to play for! x
Roman taking a toilet break? Who's he been watching?

andy had a break point, but lost it, the Rufian is outplaying him still

RS holds eventually in the opening game of the 3rd set. 1-0
Muzzah NOT happy - interesting language from him but not French.

Annoying to think that the whole match could swing on such an atrocious piece of luck as that net cord.

and holds to love, andy didn't bother in that game, he'll be serving at 0-3

So Murray lost the next 5 games after the wind-up toilet break.

Safiullin wins 6'2, 4'6, 6'1.
Andy needs to regroup before Metz ATP250 'cos that's a whole higher level.
the Rufiun wins 6-2, 4-6, 6-1
Gutted for Andy - must be a bit below par.:crying:

Some good tennis from Safiullin but that was not encouraging from Andy, wonder if there is some physical issue. Anyway hopefully in better form in the weeks ahead.

I don’t understand how his level can swing so much - two weeks ago he nearly won against number 3 in a 5 setter and today he’s playing really halfheartedly
Aw well, upwards and onwards to Metz. 2 more matches under the belt. Safiullin too hot, or maybe he was allowed to be too hot???

Over the years I trace noticed that he sometimes struggles against lower ranked players and is more pumped - and plays better against higher ranked ones - I wonder if this is the case here - trouble is he needs to win these to play more of the big guys

Not always easy to get up for a challenger but still very disappointng, could have done with more matches.
A pretty good performance by the Russian whom I've never heard of; sadly not so from Andy who was certainly lacking in energy and interest a lot of the match, not the guy who took Tsipsy to 5 sets. Very sad. See what next week brings. x
The next 2 250s have very strong fields. If Andy wants to move up the rankings, he can't afford to "not get up for Challengers". I don't think that's it anyway.
I agree, something that we don't know about and hopefully can be resolved? x

He'd better start getting 'up' for Challengers, cos that's where he's playing, and he won't get out of there without some wins. He can't keep relying on wild cards into main tour draws and hoping to avoid the seeds early on.
He's got big points to come off next month; hard to see how he can get out of the spiral. There must be an answer for him please. x

Andys serve seems to have deserted him today. A few weeks ago he was serving like he used but this week it has all gone again. I wonder if he is getting pain in his hip and doesn't want to admit it. Such a shame.

Hope it’s not physical but his second serve was terrible consistently so could be physical. Maybe he was overthinking his new service motion

Do we know when he got back from US? Also there might be something personal rather than physical :( we all know there are more important things than tennis. Maybe there's something on his mind :grouphug: everyone!

Poor Andy. I couldn't watch but it doesn't surprise me that he was flat. It could be physical, though he has been adding to his schedule very recently so something sudden if an injury. I also think the the US open must have thrown up a lot of very strong emotions - his match, but also watching young Joe and even younger Emma make history and still have so much time ahead of them. I have no doubt he's genuinely delighted for them but it still can't be easy to go from being the undisputed megastar of British tennis to having to watch from the sidelines. It's been a heady few weeks but it will calm down. If he stays healthy I think the progress will continue. Good luck always, Andy.

Not sure about the serve, but so many times he resorted to a single handed sliced 'bunt' back into court. Tells me his legs aren't reacting quickly enough to get into position for a double hander. And his forehand is just a hooked loop, he wasn't getting any real work or power into the shot. He was winning points mostly by clever positioning of his shots.

Good observation - I also noticed he wasnt chasing balls like he did at the US Open - often he would just watch the ball and make no attempt to chase it. The more I think about it the more I think he has an injury - I hope it isnt serious and he cna get back on track next week and keep building momentum...

It was 3 weeks between his match at the US Open and this match, which he spent at home with his family. That's a long time in tennis, even more so given Andy's lack of matches, it's no surprise that there was a significant difference in level.
i really thought andy threw that match, he didn't run and apart from making one game he didn't seem to care = was he disgusted with the Rufiun for his too long toilet break - or with himself for failing to break in first game of 33rd set - unlikely. sorry, but it was such a strange set, but i thought it was a mental rather than physical problem.

But given he played well in the previous match thats less likely to be the reason
