Andy will play 2nd seed Casper Ruud of Norway in R2 at San Diego.
Yet another player Muzzah has yet to meet on the circuit ... so the H2H is 0-0.
Ruud has had a pretty good season with 4 titles under his belt (of his 5 titles in total)
and is currently WR10. He's 12 years younger than Andy - who holds 46 titles in all.
Quite an interesting match up for both of them ...
... fingers crossed Andy can find a way though!

0-3 Come on Andy!!
Andy breaks back again 4-5
Ruud wins - too many errors from Andy, but good to see so much good stuff from him and that he looks so fit and well.

Rudd is just too good 7-5 6-4 but Andy played some good stuff.
Hard luck Andy. Pity he didn't nail that 1st set (once again!) x

A bit disappointing in the end but Andy showing promise , even if erred on some of the crucial points. Rudd though width momentum and now a top 10 player.

Hmm, I didn't get up to watch but the comments here suggest a bit of deja vu - some good play but faltering on the decisive points. His movement, close matches against the top players and increasingly full diary all indicate he's in physically good shape, it's now about belief. This autumn is going to interesting. Although only a 250 his win in Antwerp Oct '19 was very encouraging - not just because he beat some top guys, but showed he can play with belief even when not working with Lendl. I hope for a similarly positive tail end to this season, if not I wouldn't be surprised if rumours start to swirl about another reunion.
Once again, I managed to watch the replay without knowing the result. After the first couple of games in the 2nd set, I began to think perhaps I do know the outcome after all (sadly)! It sort of set the tone for the rest of the match. Although Andy made a few spirited attempts in 2nd set, my overall impression was if he had got more 1st serves in, the outcome could have been very different. 1st set was close, Andy played well and lived with Ruud, but alas, just not enough first serves. And also, Ruud got so many balls back from seemingly impossible positions. So well played him. He was very steady and solid. So now, on to IW. So nice to know we will see Andy, injury free I hope, for quite a few tournaments to come.
I'm happy to see all the positive comments here as I was worried about Andy. He just seemed to have something troubling him especially in that second set. Why wasn't the serve working? Maybe it was just an off day or that Ruud was too good, I hope so. My stream wasn't that good so maybe that contributed to my view.

Well it was great to see Andy, seemingly now fit and healthy, with some great shots! Just a pity he missed those chances in the first set. I know we must be patient but it's hard! He just needs that killer instinct back, these young guns don't hang around, he needs to take those opportunities when he gets them.
Having said that, I do think it's still early days and Andy is improving with each match. this was Ruud and he's no 10 in the world
Well done Andy and thank for more lost sleep....... I've missed it!

I have just watched the replay of Andys' match and I thought he played very well. Each time he plays he does something better, If he can keep on like that he will continue to be competitive. Great match to watch.
