Rafa is through in 4 sets against Khachanov.
Berretini had to fight to win his 5-setter over Alcaraz.
It's nearly 1am in Melbourne but Mannarino and Karatsev are still batting away.
1 set each, both tie-breaks.
Blimey Karatsev and Mannarino still playing at 1.45 am. I had assumed it was over as not on Eurosport 1 or 2. Found it on Eurosport Player. Mannarino has taken the 3rd set and on serve in the 4th.

The Karatsev/Mannarino battle is insanely good. 2am in Aus and still fighting away. It has been a fantastic match, shame one has to lose.
Mannarino won in the 4th set after nearly 5 hours of play finishing after 2.30 am Ozzy time. He didn't half look tired at the interview.

They were running each other into the ground. Karatsev's calf muscles are huge, but a hamstring/groin strain let him down. I wouldn't have given Mannarino much of a chance, but he has terrific hands/wrists to change the direction of the ball. They played some great quality tennis.

Didn't have Denis S beating Sascha in straights, but then the German has been cruising while the Canadian getting battle hardened. Beware the easy draw. The walkover did Dan no favours either.
Some interesting matches and delighted to see La Monf into the QFs, so entertaining, nice and overcome a lot of injuries. Kind of rooting for Rafa to go all the way. Was a big fan, then went off him big time for a few reasons, but warming to him again in light of pandemic comments. Plus him getting the big 21 would set the cat amongst the pigeons for the rest of the season. All good fun.

Certainly a disappointing defeat for Sacha , whilst Shapovalov may have been impressed remains to be seen if he can really take it to Nadal. Glad Monfils through too, I would prefer one of the younger players to win here though Rafa looking pretty strong thus far.

Denis S is totally right to call Rafa out on not playing to the server's time. Shockingly bad gamesmanship done to unsettle the server. Disliked this about Rafa for ages. He does it and gets away with it all the time. Hope Denis' complaint gets things changed the way Andy's did re toilet breaks.

Epic hold by Berrettini - 26 point game, 20 mins. Microcosm of the match so far; incredible athleticism by Monf cancelled out seconds later by massive serve by the Italian. Groan.

I don't believe it's gamesmanship on Rafa's part. It just takes him a load of time for his routine. And he does get very sweaty so needs to towel off much more than others, who just go to the towel even when they've been aced ! The umpires won't call him out cos the top players have input on who gets the show courts and no top umpire wants to be relegated to the junior matches.

Rafa can do whatever he likes within the time when he's serving. No excuse whatsoever for not playing to opponent's time when they're serving. Highly disrespectful and does unsettle opponents whether that's the primary motivation or not. It's not the Rafa show, whatever his sweat issues!

Tournament schedule. https://ausopen.com/tournament-schedule
The tournament is having a different tournament schedule this year. Both men's semis will be held on the Friday. Before, one men's semi was held on the Thursday night session. This will give the winners of the men's Tuesday quarterfinals an extra day to recover. It also means that at least one of the semifinal matches will be at a worse time for viewing in the UK.
Both ladies semis finals will be held on Thursday, and I think by the looks of it, the Thursday night session.

Don't disagree with any of what you say, except that I don't believe he does it deliberately to put off his opponents. I'd be more annoyed if I was playing some-one who bounces the ball twenty times like Novak or Cilic. And at least you know when Rafa's going through his routine he's not going to chuck in an underarm serve, which while legitimate, should only be used if you can't raise your arm to serve normally.

The thing is Rafa knows full well that his opponents hate it and have complained strongly about it (to deaf ears), but has never done the decent thing and stopped doing it, rather he chooses to carry on doing it and capitalise on faltering play by wound up opponents. That seems pretty deliberate to me and can't be persuaded otherwise I'm afraid. Totally agree that other players have some very annoying habits too.
Oh, and I blame the umpires as much as I blame Rafa - they've aided and abetted him in this over the years. Should have been stopped years ago.

I agree, it's galling, Andy beat Rafa at the start of the year yet here we are Nadal in the final. The only upside is that I think well if Rafa can get back to top level at 35 and after injury, so can Andy even if it takes him a bit longer :peace: (nobody @ me! - I know not all injuries are the same, I just like to see Andy's generation still winning big)

Looking forward to the final. I really don't mind who wins. Would love Rafa to win and break the tie but won't Medvedev become #1 when last years Aussie points drop if he wins? I'm probably missing something as from what I read everyone seems to say Djokovic will stay #1.

Well I said I didn't care who won but realized as I was watching that I really wanted Rafa to win and alas it wasn't going his way. What a match and I was shouting loudly for Rafa. Medvedev will have many more chances. Vamos!!! :skippy::trophy::bravo:
Did anyone else see Medvedev mouthing the word boring several times during the womans speech, which did go on a bit, especially as the players were exhausted. I'm not sure the cameras continually picking that up will do him any favours.
He certainly made a point of NOT thanking the crowd for their support in his speech. I liked the KIA man's speech, short and to the point, and not in the slightest bit self-congratulatory.
