BRISBANE 2012, SEMI-FINAL: Andy Trumps Tomic 6'3, 6'2

Andy is through to the Semi-Final in Brisbane.

His opponent is one of the upcoming 'young guns' of the next generation of tennis players - Bernard Tomic who at just aged 19 is already WR42 (CH41 in Nov 2011). They've never met before so the H2H is 0-0.

The young Australian has risen through the rankings as quickly as Andy did at the same age and his game has been likened to Andy's so I think this could be a fascinating encounter. .

In 2011 Tomic rose from 208 in January to 42 in December in the rankings - a jump of 166. In July 2005 Andy (aged 19) was ranked 205 and 12months later he was up to #35 ...

As a side note: Andy has been in the top 10 continuously since 7th July 2008 and in the top 4 continuously since 8th September 2008 (barring a dozen weeks at #5 end 2010/early 2011).

The match is 3rd on Pat Rafter Arena after the first Mens Semi starting at 1pm local time between Dolgopolov and Simon.
So, approximately 3pm start local time means 5am in the UK!!!

Had a look at Tomic's playing record. He had the stellar QF appearance at Wimbledon last year, but this is his very first ATP SF appearance.On one level he has already achieved a personal best this tournament, and on another he is clearly a rising star.
If you haven't seen him play this week the highlights of his match against Istomin are available on the right side of http://www.youtube.com/brisbanetennis Worth seeing because in about 2:51 there are an awful lot of forehand winners. He seems to have that knack of deciding very late whether he is whacking it down the line or cross court . Or hit a cross court angle near the net. Very hard to defend against.
I wonder if Andy might mercilessly target his backhand.
Anyway, will be interesting. Just hope the difference in experience tells in the end and Andy's form against Baggy was a sign of things to come as well as just yesterday!
