View Full Version : Andy's Search for a Coach.

Andy straight talking as always. As starkly shown by the poor FAA match a day after the brilliant Bublik one, he is inconsistent. Andy thinks mixed coaching messages are part of the problem and wants clarity. I hope he finds it.

There is an Andy/Lendl thread but I have started a new one to discuss Andy's current search for a coach. Andy has said that he knows he has to choose very carefully at this point in his career, so it will be interesting to see who he teams with.

Been thinking, I'd love to see Andy work with Martina Navratilova. An iron fist in a velvet glove personality, similar to Lendl. Also, who better to help Andy shorten points by coming forward more. I wonder if there's any possibility. Doubt it unfortunately, she has a lot of TV commitments.

I recall She was coaching a few years ago wasn’t she but gave it up as it needed more time than she could give.
He needs direction - and the mental side of it needs help. Martina played way on after her peers had retired - she would have a lot of experience to share with him!

Plus having battled breast cancer she would have a good understanding of body/frailty anxiety Andy might be having.

You're right she did coach for a while.* She (rightly!) really respects Andy - saw her effusive praise a couple of weeks ago when Andy turned down big money to play in Saudi so you never know. Maybe we should petition her!

* She coached Aga R. A snippet from NY Times interview:

Q. You said in the past that you’d be open to coaching if the opportunity arose. Was Radwanska one of the players you thought you could help?

A. I’ve thought about a bunch of players, and she definitely would have been one of them because she has got all the shots. It’s not like I need to teach her the shots, maybe more when to use them.

Ah-ha, Andy's got all the shots too! And as Mrs P said, just needs a little help with when to use them as he's a bit match rusty

Yes, the additional coach will be the one travelling with him but with Lendl advising.

Couldn’t be happier for Andy. I think this will help him with choices about whether he carries on or not. If working with Lendl doesn’t improve his results, then he can think carefully about his future. I’m sure just knowing Lendl is there to help him will give him a huge boost both mentally and physically. Exciting times again.

Wow - what a shock!
Lendl definitely had the magic touch with him in terms of his success. Hope that’s the case this time.
I hope also he doesn’t make him push his body too much.
Seems remote working is all the rage - even for tennis coaches!

I’m really quite excited about this!
Great to have something positive in this difficult time!

Certainly should give Andy a boost mentally, Lendl did install confidence in the past though more challenging to create so much magic this time around. My only reservation is that I hope Andy is not pushed too much physically as the circumstances a bit different now.

OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD, I AM IN HEAVEN! I wished so much for this but didn't dare believe it was a possibility. Love them both - they belong together. So, so happy and relieved for Andy - was struggling to see a different way out for him with his mental block - and over the moon for the fans!!! YIPEEEEEEEE!!! (I'm extremely happy in case anyone didn't realise! :rolling:)

Of course no guarantees - this just means Andy's given himself the best chance and that's all I want for him.

Wowsers. Must admit I never thought this would happen but I'm glad it has. The past results speak for themselves when Andy & Ivan have worked together. Ok Andy's in a different stage of his career this time but their past success shows the partnership works, so I hope this time around he can reap the benefits again. Much to look forward to in the grass court season

Mentioned on the newspaper thread but belongs here too. An interesting interview with Alex Corretja.

Eurosport - ANDY MURRAY'S 'LAST DANCE' WITH COACH IVAN LENDL FUELLED BY BELIEF HE CAN STILL WIN TITLES, SAYS ALEX CORRETJA

"My first reaction was that he still believes that he can be a champion," two-time French Open finalist Corretja told Eurosport.

"Because otherwise you don't go back with your former coach, the one with which you achieved the most important tournament wins of your career.

“I was very pleased, I was very happy and I was very surprised I have to say. I think they believe in each other, both of them. Andy goes back to his old coach because he feels that ‘OK, he's the one that gave me everything I know and he is the one that took everything I had inside’.

"And of course he wants to go there because he feels that Ivan gets the best out of his tennis, and Ivan accepting the role is because probably talking to Andy, he still feels that he's got some desire to still achieve something important. Otherwise I don't see Lendl taking the plane to go back to a tournament if he doesn't feel that he can help Andy to achieve important things.

“I'm not saying to keep maybe a high level for a long time but maybe to just make the last dance for Andy and that's why probably he's motivated about it."

......

“For me, the most important thing is respect," added Corretja. "Andy respects him so much. He knows Andy very well, he knows how to deal with Andy. He knows not to react to Andy's movements or strange things on the court and he's going bring him some belief, some faith that he can still do it again. And if you have someone next to you that brings you all this calmness.

“I think it's very important to just give your best and from what I saw with Andy in the last few months, I must say that the level of his tennis is still high."

......

"Probably the only question is how can he keep the level for five, six, seven matches in a tournament. That's the only concern that I have about him, about physically, not mentally, because I think he's ready. Probably his tennis is already there as well. But physically that's a question mark. And if Ivan can work with him properly, I think he can still got some juice out of the tank.

“When you had so much success with a coach then when you are in a bad moment, you always feel inside your heart, I'm going call this guy because he knows me. And that's what I feel Andy feels comfortable with Lendl because he knows he's not going to have any doubts about himself, he's not going to doubt Andy, he's just going feel like ‘OK, let's go, listen to me and you're going do whatever I say. And if you do that, maybe we have a chance’.
"Andy maybe feels he's the only one that I will go for whatever he said, I will do it. And this is very important as a coach and as a player."

And from Henin

“Lendl and Murray working together again is a surprise, even though they have worked together well in the past,” Henin told Eurosport.

“I have a lot of respect for the fact that Andy Murray keeps looking for ways to come back. You can feel there’s still this pleasure to be there, this desire to continue to push yourself, to go forward.

“Will it work? It depends on the goals he sets. From personal experience, I think it’s the pleasure of the human adventure too; being able to surround yourself with the right people and to feel the right moment.

“If Murray comes back to Lendl and Lendl comes back to him it’s because between them there are extremely positive things that allow them both to continue to move forward and grow.”

As soon as I heard it was Lendl I thought of Rosiebear  I was never a fan of Lendl and always thought he might have been the one who pushed Andy too hard, the one he said he should have said no to … BUT there is no doubting what they have achieved together and now I think this is sooo positive. There is no way they would get back together if either of them thought Andy could not achieve again.

I also love the fact that Andy has employed British coaches over the years (either sole coach or in partnership) and now agin with Mark Hilton. Go Team Murray!

Beyond interesting, jaw-dropping.

"I don’t feel I’ve been practising the right things probably for 18 months or so. It’s difficult to undo that in the space of a few weeks."

What??? That's astonishing. How awful to go through all the pain, risky surgery and killer rehab/training only to have progress hindered by sub optimal practising. Poor Andy. Thank goodness he's back with Ivan and can reset. Hopefully they can get on the right track in time for the grass. Good luck to them.

But surely this is just deflection. I mean, he must surely set his own practice regime. Physical training, I can understand if he's been working on certain areas and now he's told he should be doing differently. But not actual hitting the ball. He knows what he needs to do.

Seems he doesn't because he's said all this year that he's been getting mixed messages about game plan and he wants clarity about how to play.
He started making comments to this affect after ditching Cabril and De Witt.
