The new year has come in and the holidays are over so it's time to clean the dust off your cars and prepare for the Bubble Gap Championship 2012!
2011 saw Genbrit lifting the trophy. Will she retain her title or will someone else take the top spot? Perhaps a newcomer will arrive and surprise everyone?

Rules of the competition
The competition was created and originally run by Rondun. I'll be running the competition this year or until Rondun gets back (please be gentle!). The aim of this competition is to guess the 'bubble gap' at the end of a tournament which is either the no. of points between Andy and the player in 9th place in the rankings (if Andy is in the top 8) or the no. of points between Andy and the player in 8th place (if Andy is outside the top 8).

Note that the ATP rankings are not used for this competition but race rankings. In the past the ATP would keep track of rankings based on current year results in addition to the normal ATP rankings (which is based on results from the previous 12 months). These were known as the race rankings. They eventually did away with it however, and nowadays it only appears when the WTF is approaching. It was this reason that prompted Rondun to create and run this competition.

With each competition you have to guess what you think the bubble gap will be and the person closest to the correct answer is the winner. Only positive numbers are allowed – there's no need to guess negative values. For example if you think Andy will be 500 points behind the 8th ranked player then your guess is 500, not -500. If Andy ends up 500 points ahead of the 9th ranked player then you still win.

Note that no 2 entrants can guess the same number and you can't change your guess once you've posted it.

Bubble Gap competitions run at all the Slams and Master tournaments, so a total of 13.

Scoring
The scoring used for this competition is the same as the one used in F1 racing. The top 10 entrants will get the following points:

1st
25

2nd
18

3rd
15

4th
12

5th
10

6th
8

7th
6

8th
4

9th
2

10th
1

Also if somebody correctly guesses the exact bubble gap a 10 point bonus will be awarded in addition to the 25 points.

In the event of a tie (for example, one person guesses 50 points below the bubble gap and another guesses 50 above it), the one who posted first gets higher precedence.

The overall winner of the Bubble Gap Championship will be the player who has the most points at the end of the year. Tiebreaks in the leaderboard are settled by the following:
1st place finishes -> Exact bubble gap guesses -> 2nd place finishes -> 3rd place finishes -> Points earned in slams -> No. tournaments scored

Each competition will also count towards the Champion of Champions with the top 10 earning points.

General deadlines
The first bubble gap will be for the Australian Open which starts on the 16th January. Generally deadline for entries will be just before the 1st match of the tournament. You're free to enter as many of the competitions as you like so feel free to join in at any time!

You may have also seen in previous bubble gap competitions that sometimes Rondun (and others) post 'commentary' during a competition. Seeing as the points system is based on F1 and the comp is based on race rankings, Rondun sometimes provided racing commentary as the comp was running. All just fun banter - feel free to join in!

Best of luck to all who take part and may the best driver win!

Don't worry, I haven't forgotten. Hopefully your enthusiasm will rub off onto the race.

I'll start the thread for Indian Wells sometime this weekend.

The following post explains how the ATP calculates race rankings and how the way I do it differs. If you don't care about any of this then the TL;DR version is: ATP race rankings differ from my race rankings, I'm continuing to do it my way but as you approach the end of the year they should end up the same.
If you're interested then read on.

Firstly thanks to the mods (and particularly Yorkie) for helping me figure this all out.
So, you may/may not have noticed that the ATP changed their rules slightly this year for the rankings. Taken straight from their FAQ:

Q. What is the ranking structure and formula in 2012?

A. In November 2011, the ATP Board passed a rule to allow more flexibility in which tournaments count toward the ranking of a commitment player in 2012.

Commitment players (top 30 in 2011 year-end ranking) can count their best six (6) results from ATP World Tour 500, ATP World Tour 250 and other events (Challengers, Futures, Davis Cup, Olympics) toward their ranking. To count their best six (6), players must have fulfilled their commitment to 500 events - 4 total per year (at least 1 after the US Open).

Now my understanding from this is that top 30 players must play 4 500 events, but they can count their best 6 scores from 500s/250s/others. My assumption was that when calculating race points the '4 500s' rule should only be enforced after the last 500 event of the year is played, as that is the only way to keep things fair.

The ATP however think differently. The way they enforce the '4 500s' rule is to give the commitment players 4 0 pointers which only drop off each time they play a 500 tournament. So to start with, commitment players can only count their best 2 500/250/other events.

This meant that there were differences between my race rankings and the ATP. In the race rankings pre Indian Wells for example, Almagro's race points differ quite a lot. This year he has played:

Name

Points

Aus Open
180

Acapulco 500
90

DC (listed as a 500)
40

Chennai 250
90

Auckland 250
45

Sao Paulo 250
250

Buenos Aires 250
150

I've counted all 6 optionals in his race score which gives 845. However, the ATP have only allowed his 3 best 'others' as he's only played 1 500 event so far (note that although DC is listed as a 500, the ATP doesn't count it as one).
So for Almagro they've taken the Aus Open(180) + Sao Paulo(250) + Buenos Aires(150) + Chennai(90) = 670. This affects things as depending on which method I use, the bubble gap would also be different as Almagro is 9th in the race.

After talking to the mods about this they agreed that it's fine for me to use the method I prefer as long as I state which one I use. I'd rather keep with my method because frankly, I dislike the ATP version. It's a bit unfair as players outside the top 30 can count any 6 tournies they want. Granted, this only impacts the race rankings and even then that impact is small in the long run, but it's the principle I disagree with. That, and my method is easier. :)

If you've read this far, thanks for reading . Hopefully that didn't confuse anybody. Now back to the race (which I wish would start soon as it's getting boring at the starting line).

Given the circumstances, I'm sure if you made it entertaining enough the stewards will look the other way...

So after the 1st two "races" of the season, we have 2 drivers with a win and a third place each - the question is: are Dave & eblunt the Red Bulls, or the McLarens or are they Seb & Lewis or Mark & Jenson.... maybe we're in for a complete surprise - can't wait, we'll find out on Sunday!
Yorkie in 3rd spot also has a 100% scoring record as do Vixs and JAMES so well done all five for having no faith in Andy whatsoever! http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c130/rondun/stirthepot.gif

Our Golden Muppets also number 5 - but it's a bit too early to name and shame...
...I'll wait until after midday at least!

...are Dave & eblunt the Red Bulls, or the McLarens or are they Seb & Lewis or Mark & Jenson.... maybe we're in for a complete surprise - can't wait, we'll find out on Sunday!..or Alonso! who saw that one.. and Seb Who? Maybe we should start calling him "Doctor".

Anyway, eventually we see some proper action in Miami and those managing to overcome most of their vices in the heat (see what I did there ;)) are Golden Lady who's 2nd spot sees her climb 10 places in the drivers' Championship to 7th; Genbrit - up 7 with her 3rd place finish; Manuas' first points of the season moves him up to 11th and not least our most recent race winner cazza climbs up to 3rd spot - narrowly missing out on those bonus points which would have left her in 2nd spot, battling for the lead!

However it seems some dodgy rear wings may have made an appearance on the track, so the stewards will be having a very close look at the back end of some of the cars at the next race.:shamed:

Special mention to our current no 1 driver DaveArneRiise and Vixs who are the only 2 to have scored points in all 3 races so far.
(Or the one race plus Melbourne & IW depending on your view!)

Plus a super special mention to the 2 at the other end of the paddock - the Golden Muppets can hide no longer, but who will be the last muppet standing: J-du_cobite or Lizzim?!

Can't wait for the streets of Monte Carlo!:excited:

Somehow I don't think I'll be leading overall anymore!Right you are! - I did update the chart after Madrid where you dropped down to 4th but it disappeared for some reason.

Anyhoo, the chart is now up to date after Rome, and it's eblunt who leads the driver's championship with some consistent scoring despite a valiant attempt by cazza to take top spot with a prefect guess in Madrid. (that was meant to be a perfect guess but I like the idea of the 1st one better! - i'll look out a badge)

Ace just manages to tread water with an excellent recent run of form, while Linda rounds off the top for who, except for cazzas little blip in Monaco that we don't like to talk about, have each scored points in the all of the last 3 races with at least one podium each!
JAMES's home run in Rome sees him climb up 11 places while elenive moves into the top ten with 2 podiums out of 3 race finishes!
The other 2 top scorers joining eblunt on 5/6 scoring races are Sallydaisy and Vixs:worship:

Special mention to Lizzim who has elevated herself out of Golden Muppet status with a cuarenta iguales in Madrid.
And talking of muppets of the golden variety, our sole remaining one was reportedly last seen trying to light a cigarette behind Mr Williams' garage...

With one race to go the current standings are:

http://imageshack.us/a/img715/8070/leaderboardshanghai.png

With Linda not entering Shanghai and cazza not scoring any points this has allowed some of the other drivers to close the gap on them. JAMES4578 and hfwardhouse made the biggest gains making it a very tight top 5. DaveArneRiise's 8 points from Shanghai has also helped him to stay in championship contention.

In terms of who can be champion, any of the top 7 are in with a chance. eblunt however hasn't entered the last few races but he may make an appearence in Paris. Ace! in 8th could also take the trophy but would require the 10 bonus points from a perfect BG to stand any chance of winning.

So to all of you, well done for doing so well and the very best of luck in Paris.

It's been one long (and exciting) tennis season. After 13 races it's time to name our Bubble Gap Champion. Before Paris it was very tight at the top and it ended up being so at the end too. So without further ado, the top 3 are as follows:

:bronze: goes to Linda with 103 points. Linda was the leader before Paris but unfortunately didn't gain enough points in Paris to maintain that lead. Still, great effort by her.

:silver: goes to hfwardhouse with 106 points. Credit is due as she made a very strong push for the title in the latter half of the season - a top 10 finish streak of 6 and she podiummed in the last 3, great stuff. She actually came very close to winning the championship (you might want to hide VamosVixs ;)).

Finally our champion, who has won the championship in style. This person pretty much needed a podium finish in Paris to win and he nearly fell short (thank goodness Tipsy retired!). He just managed to edge out VamosVixs though and with 110 points he is our 2012 Bubble Gap Champion.
So step forward and collect your trophy please Mr DaveArneRiise!
