Just watching Tsonga’s final match. It looks like his shoulders gone, just as he broke Rudd to try to take it a 5th. Poor chap.

Bless Jo- W, massive fan favourite and will be huge loss to the game. The next 12-24 months are going to be so sad as the golden generation fades away one by one. We've been so spoilt over the last 15 years or so; indescribable levels of entertainment and joy. Thank goodness for Emma, she's a massive consolation to me.
Thought Casper Ruud was lovely today in a difficult situation.

JAMES4578
24-05-2022, 17:33
Certainly great tribute for Jo, pity he was struggling towards the end but gave it his best shot and considering his fitness in recent years to make this tournament his swansong was likely the right move. Will be missed though, one of the game's entertainers and gave us some great matches even if some disappointments. Credit to Rudd too!

Tsitsipas v Kolar was a match for the ages. Kolar couldn't quite pull off the upset but the way he fought to make the most of his opportunity (qualified for a slam after 16 attempts) will live long in the memory. He is a credit to the game. Stark contrast with the likes of Osaka.

Agreed much the same as Djokovic. I was at the final between them at Queens; most of the match was spent bouncing the ball

RosieBear
31-05-2022, 09:39
Wow! Cilic finding the kind of form that won the US open, a total spanking for poor Daniil. If Marin can keep it up I like his chances because his route is easier.

Super impressive match from Sascha to burst the Alcaraz bubble  Anyone with eyes can see Carlito is extremely special but the pundit hype is far, far too much. His time will come, not overly sad to say goodbye to him today.

JAMES4578
31-05-2022, 18:21
Certainly great contest, before the match thought it was pretty likely Alcaraz would win and had it gone to a 5th may have had the advantage. However Sacha was mightly impressive and the young Spaniard had some elements of doubt in the 1st 2 sets. However perhaps it was just too early for Carlito and some comentators getting carried away. whilst precocious talent still needs to develop further .

At first was not sure it was going to live up to expectations when Nadal was up a set and 3-0 though Djokovic did get into it but overall Rafa was the better player and was strong on most of the big points. Certainly it became intriguing with a lot of exciting exchanges. Looked like a 5th but a few some rash shots from Novak and Nadal had other ideas. Match fitness undoubtable a factor (even if Nadal had injuries recently ) he was more prepared.

Fantastic match. Pity it had to be the QF, and that winner should play Zverev in SF. The draw seems to be top heavy, one finalist from Novak, Rafa, Alcaraz and Zverev, the other finalist from Rune, Ruud, Rublev and Cilic

JAMES4578

yes such a pity and devestating - such a cruel blow for Zverev. It was intriguing contest with a lot of gruelling points. As expected unable to continue, came back to concede on crutches- hope will not take too long to recover.

Think Nadal was on course to take it mind you as Sacha was not quite able to capitalise in most of the key moments, though there were several breaks in the 2nd. cannot see either Cilic or Rudd doing too much in the final ,hopefully a good contest between them though.

RosieBear
03-06-2022, 16:52
What a shame  That's the thing with tennis, it's such a demanding sport and can be cruel. Any player is always just one rally away from a potentially career-ending injury. Not saying that's what Sascha is facing, it's just a reason why I have so much time for so many of them.

Cilic/Ruud will be cursing - to have a chance they'd need a softened-up Rafa in the final.

Good match by Ruud but a nightmare from Cilic.

Just reported that, unsurprisingly, Rafa's taking a break after RG and won't play Wimbledon, and Cilic, one of the few players whose game transfers well clay to grass, has just buckled. The list of players who will be absent or subpar for one reason or another is getting really long. Just sayin :big grin:

As expected Nadal took 14th French and 22 slam- in the circumstances pre tournament really impressive! obviously not the best final in terms of excitement but did not think Ruud was the one to provide a real challenge. Half a chance with that 3-1 lead in the 2nd but thereafter was all Rafa as he won 11 consecutive games. Still the Norwegian had a good tournament. Despite earlier reports seems we do not yet for sure if Nadal will skip Wimbledon.
