View Full Version : Bubble Gap 2012 - Aus Open: Deadline Jan 15th 11.59pm UK time
There's a buzz around the air – hot Melbourne sun, first grand slam of the year, staying up till the early hours of the morning. It could only mean one thing, the Australian Open is here and it's also the first Bubble Gap race of the year!
http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww173/prestonjjrtr/Smileys/Smiley27.gif
If you need to remind yourself of the rules or you're new to this competition, then please read the rules posted here (http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?538-Bubble-Gap-Championship-2012-AO-open!!!-Deadline-Sun-15th-Jan-23.59-UK-time). As explained in that thread, the aim of this competition is to guess the bubble gap after the Australian Open. The current race rankings are as follows:
http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/7742/race9112f2.jpg
The current bubble gap is 100. That's Andy's score (250) – Dolgopolov's score (150) = 100.
The highest possible bubble gap is 2070. This is Andy winning the title, with Dolgopolov going out in the 1st round and someone who hasn't gained any points yet getting to R4 in the Aus Open (180 points).
The smallest bubble gap is simply 0. This is where Andy falls to 8th or 9th in the rankings and is tied in points with the other.
However, do keep in mind that there is a possibility that Andy may fall out of the top 8 (hope not!). Just as a point of information, in the worst case scenario where Andy loses in the 1st round and falls out of the top 8, the biggest gap would be around 425.
Remember that regardless of whether you think Andy will be in the top 8 or outside it, your guess is still a positive number.
So in summary, your guess is between 0 and 2070. If you don't want to do any maths then just guess a random number and see how things turn out!
Remember that you can't guess the same number as someone else and once you've posted your guess you can't change it.
Ranking points on offer for the Australian Open are:
R1: 10
R2: 45
R3: 90
R4: 180
QF: 360
SF: 720
F: 1200
W: 2000
Good luck to all who take part and may the best driver win!
:trophy:
Deadline: Sunday 15th Jan, 11.59pm
Edit: Fixed a few typos, updated post with Thursday results.
Edit2: Updated post with Friday results. Current bubble gap is now set no matter what happens in Sydney/Auckland.
Edit3: Updated chart with Ferrer win. Bubble gap for worst case scenario of Andy losing 1st round has increased from 350 to 425.
Edit4: Updated chart with Nieminen win. He actually gets 112 points as I forgot to add his points for going through qualifying.

Why does Ferrer have 325points? shouldn't it be 250 And Nadal should only have 90 points
Or i'm going mad?

Ok, this gets confusing. Basically, the ATP considers the year end to be the end of the WTF which is run in November. Anything that runs after the WTF till the real end of the year counts towards the race for 2012 (don't ask me why, ATP logic). The Davis Cup final runs shortly after the WTF and you get ranking points for that. Each singles win in the final nets you 75 points and points from Davis Cup counts as a 500 tournament event. Nadal won 2 singles and Ferrer one so they get 150 and 75 points respectively.
It's the reason why you may also see low ranked players inside the race top 100 at the beginning of the year as many of these players play Future tournaments in December.
I'll take 1820.
Just a bit more than 24 hours to get your entries in.
First time trying this so, ... 2010

I may have done my maths wrong but I don't think the bubble gap can be as high as 2100. As far as I can see 2070 is the highest. If you want to change your guess I can make an exception in this case. If you're happy with 2100 then that's fine too.

Manaus, we tend to keep this comp open for chatter but you need to say if you're prepared to accept any more entries given that play has started.

Looks like you're doing just fine, keep going as you are if you're happy with it while I get used to the new surroundings!
(I haven't even thought about starting up a race chart for 2012 yet anyway #newyearresolutionsyoucanleavetilllater)
So this Murray guy... worth watching?

Hopefully worth staying up till the early hours of the morning to watch him. :) With a certain 'Mr Lendl' in his box I've got a good feeling.
20 drivers turn up in sunny Melbourne. Whether they're there for a race or just trying to get away from the cold weather back home no-one knows but onto the track they go for qualifying. They're a couple of new drivers joining in this year along with some returning faces and all of them want to start off the year by being champion in Melbourne.
With a heated qualifying race done DaveArneRiise, (who barely made it in time for the race thanks to a certain benefactor) comes out on top to lead the pack followed by Ace!.
New driver eblunt and rondun, returning from a short hiatus makes up the 2nd row.
cazza99 and Yorkie start behind them with VamosVixs and last year's champion Genbrit lining up in the 4th row.
JAMES4578 and pabbers round off the top 10.
Drivers are all ready and the flag is about to come down. Who will triumph and take the first victory of 2012?
(Note: leaderboard will be displayed and updated in the 2nd post of this thread)

The flag comes down and they're off...
...Oh wait, before everyone sets off, it's probably best if they make sure that they're dressed lightly. Got to remember to put on some suncream too. Oh and have a cold beverage as well. It's pretty hot out there, health and safety first and all that. Don't want anyone collapsing in the heat.
Don't worry the race will start soon enough...
Here's something for the golfists while we wait for the red light to go out...
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c130/rondun/amcom/2012%20comps/TennisGolf-2012-OZO.png
..Andy eventually makes his way onto the leaderboard
For fun can you guess:
1) the highest placed TennisGolf R2 loser and 2) the lowest placed player in R3?
Checks all done it appeared everyone was ready to go until a few people are spotted in the stands collapsing from the heat. A time out is called as said people are treated, delaying the race further.
So...another round of drinks then? :wino:
For fun can you guess:
1) the highest placed TennisGolf R2 loser and 2) the lowest placed player in R3?
I'm guessing:
1) Andreas Beck
2) Julien Benneteau
Looks like it could be a long delay!
Nope, though funnily enough both Beck and Benneteau are 32nd equal on 3 under. Plus there are four R2 players ahead of Beck & four R3 players behind Bennetau!
The second one might be obvious if you think about it... then again the more I think about it, it probably isn't
Emergency dealt with and drinks finished, everyone gets back into position. The lights turns green and they're off...
...Yes, they're really off this time, this isn't Paris 2.0. In fact quite the opposite, maybe the long wait made everyone restless as they're driving as fast as they can, looks like we're in for a pretty competitive race. No drama yet though, things are going smoothly at the moment.
Whether it will stay that way though remains to be seen...
Oops - nearly missed the start after a "comfort break", hopefully there won't be too many bugs on the track in this race...
Oh and the answer to the TennisGolf Q was 1) Simon on 6-under & 2) Isner on 1-under
Andy is moving up the leaderboard nicely, but it's scary how easy Nole is going - he won Wimbledon on 24-under and he's already 22-under after 3 rounds here
Nothing much happening on track, so...
Novak's still cruising as he maintains his 7 point lead at the top of the leaderboard, (lets hope that changes soon!) while Andy consolidates 5th place just 1 shot behind "the rest".
Berdy actually falls below Almagro after dropping a shot in their close match... as well as a lot of respect!
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c130/rondun/amcom/2012%20comps/TennisGolf-2012-OZO.png
did you count last nites eagles for andy ?
Yep up to date.
This comp is obviously extremely important to Andy as he's playing this one really smart. Every time he thought Kukushkin was about to throw in the towel he handed him a game in order to maximise his break point chances. Smart Lad!
Looking forward to a few Albatrosses in the next match, but still a way to catch Novak who could, but hopefully won't, beat his US Open score of 32 under
Apologies for not updating yesterday. My computer broke down and I spent most of the evening getting it running again. Thankfully the bubble gap files are still intact.
Anyway, charts have been updated with R4 results and posted as usual in the 2nd post of this thread. Still nothing major happening but I get the feeling that there will be some action soon. :)
Round and round the track they go, who will stop first no-one knows...
Sorry that sounded lame but in all seriousness it is getting very hot out there. It's coming down to who will last till the end of the race rather than who the fastest is. We're arriving at the business end of the race and still no change in positions however, drivers at the front appear to be struggling the most with the heat...
Who will be the first to pit in for an ice bag? Or will all the drivers hold out until the end?
Sorry to everyone else, but if i've done my sums right I really hope Sally wins this!

The current gap is 610. AllyB was just stating that if Andy goes on to win the title (we hope!), the gap will be 1890.

Oh yes and thanks Rondun for the TennisGolf!
See you all at Indian Wells
:thanks: for the work Manaus!!!
I should really be in 1st place as Dave missed the deadline!!! OVER to the RACE stewards!
Yep well done all, but lets hope we can actually have a race next time and those with faith in Andy can get rewarded!.
Thanks Manaus for making my life easier!
Oh - and a 2 race ban to Ace for wasting the stewards time!
So as far as the TennisGolf is concerned...
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c130/rondun/amcom/2012%20comps/TennisGolf-2012-OZO.png
at least Andy is deservedly the best of the losers!
Djoko already beating his remarkable US open score, but of course he could always drop a few shots in the final
I should really be in 1st place as Dave missed the deadline!!! OVER to the RACE stewards!
Don't look at me, I was overruled. :halo: Over to rondun...
Oh - and a 2 race ban to Ace for wasting the stewards time!
His judgement stands.

Don't take it too seriously Ace, rondun and the rest of us are just joking around. Banter as you say.
In the worst case scenario you could disguise yourself and slip into the next race. ;)
LOL you should know by now if you dish out banter round here, you should expect some back!
Anway if this is the criteria...
Can I appeal - i think any ban should cover all competitions!

then I need to ban mysel...
Bit of me would like that, but the other 99% wants Fed to get to the final so he can be beaten by Andy after dispatching the world no 1 on the way and shut his smug gobness up once and for all!

But this must have been the most boring F1 race ever, it was just a procession

Think 390 must be the biggest winning score so far
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c130/rondun/amcom/2012%20comps/TennisGolf-2012-OZO.png
... so Novak finishes this off on an amazing 36 under - 4 better than his US Open score. Lets hope that's as low as he can go!
Notable mentions to Dolgo & Simon for out performing their positions (or having easy games depending on your point of view) & at the other end of the spectrum are Isner / Mahut & Tomic who had a few close games / got further than they should have!
