First time they will have played on grass which is hard to believe!

I don't think Wimbledon are doing Andy any favours by putting him on 3rd match again. I know that being on Centre gives him some guarantee of his start time, and it should be around 5-630pm, but if Novak goes to 5 then Emma plays 3, it might be 8pm before he gets on. Closing the roof means they would then have 3 hours playing time so he could get dragged into playing Thursday which puts him at a disadvantage if Sinner/Ymer get finished today.
I know it could also work to his advantage if it rains today and Sinner/Ymer don't play til tomorrow, but it wouldn't hurt to put Andy on either first or second. Probably due to BBC pressure wanting to maximise their viewing figures. As AM says, he's not getting any younger and playing later in the day is bound to affect his recovery.

In his interview Andy also mentioned that they have made the start time for Centre later and are now having on court interviews between the matches, so there is even more delay by the time the third match comes on. I think it would be better if they had kept it at 1.00 pm.

It is also not always in Andy's favour to play with the roof closed, apart from the fact he may have more experience of the change in conditions than some of his opponents.

Isner on fire at the moment. Sadly.
Andy needs to play smart

Not good, but Isner has nothing to lose.

Come on Andy. You usually eat him for breakfast.

Was hoping Andy break Isner before tiebreak but nope. I just have to hope Isner serve go funny during tiebreak instead cos his serving been too solid today.

Thankfully Isner serve didn't work out this tiebreak with lot of pressure from Andy and crowd. Phew! Another set we go!

It really was. Isner's words at the end were kind.

Beyond heartbroken for Andy. Slow start meant always chasing the match, the nature of the break in the 4th was just a dagger through the heart. Massive opportunity with so many big names out. He sacrificed the clay to give himself the best chance. So unbelievably gutted for him. I'll struggle to watch the rest of the tournament and I'm never like that :sad::sad:

John Isner is such a nice man who has beautiful words about Andy being a better player than him. If Andy had to go out at least it's to a nice guy. He's playing really well especially the volleys - all the doubles paying off. Good luck for next match.

Gutted, really wanted Andy to at least get to the second week:sad:

Gutted for Andy (though was not as optimistic on his overall chances as some) and did not expect Isner to maintain that level consistently . May have been few chances to break but still Andy a bit disappointing in some key moments. Thought it might change after the display in 3rd set Breaker but was just not quite solid enough in the 4th. I think Murray would likely have had the upper hand in a 5th but that is immaterial now. As others have said glad John was so appreciative of Andy and his achievements.

Oh well... such a pity to come up against Isner in Round 2, especially in inspired form (not just the serving but the quality of the volleys), but there you go. Andy and other top players have always said that playing the big servers like Isner always comes down to a few points. You hold your serve during the games part of the set, get a point or two on your opponent's serve in the TB with probably six good serves of your own. When Andy got that first point in the third set TB I thought that Andy had a chance to win the match, but of course he had to hold serve.
Some of Andy's shot making was really good.
Mixed Doubles entry anyone or has the deadline passed and is Andy's ranking high enough?

JAMES4578

Mixed Draw is now out and neither Andy or Emma are in it.

Extremely nice words by Isner. If he can play close to tonight's level against Sinner it'll be interesting.

Was on Centre to see Andy. Gutted he lost but those Isner serves were unreturnable. One thing did cheer me up....the love the crowd has for Andy. It took some a while to catch on to what we've always known, Andy is just a fantastic player and person. Hope Andy will see the positives in a few days but definitely one that feels like a punch in the guts

Radio Five Live played a short clip of his interview and he hopes to be back at Wimbledon next year.

I’m still feeling gutted about this but the main take away is that Andy needs to get his ranking higher so he doesn’t get these seeds and also he needs to be on his game right away not take a while to get into it.
Good news is that this is such a great improvement from where he was last year. I do think that Andy can make an impact at the top level if he keeps at it.
Also given that many players will lose points because they aren’t gaining points this year will this help Andy’s ranking at all?

Whilst being bitterly disappointed with the result, the best part was surely seeing Andy so obviously free from pain - a massive endorsement for everyone involved in his recovery plan which includes Andy and Kim themselves. x

I don’t normally watch the post match interviews but this is worth watching as Andy talks about the match and his plans going forward.

He needs a hug.

I can't bear to watch it. He looked so crushed as he sat down after being broken in the 4th. He knew it was over and he'd normally make "that" shot 100% of time. But he needs to be kind to himself and accept it was due to the relentless pressure Isner heaped on from the first point. Andy did incredibly well seeing as he lost most of his grass court prep.

Having slept on it there are many positives - he is healthy, pain free, and playing great tennis. The abdominal injury was just one of those things that can happen to any player at any time. Andy is good to go.

He has Kim at home and Lendl in the locker room. They will look after him and build him back up. Remember what he did in 2012 just weeks after the hardest loss of his career. Our boy knows how to bounce back. Bring on the US Open

Now hope Mr Isner wins the whole thing. Not just because he was pure class after beating Andy. And pure class for not disputing Andy’s set point that the ball boy caught prematurely . Also because he's playing the best tennis of his life at 37. Rafa, 36, won 2 slams this year. There is still time for Andy, and I still believe.

You are right - Isner gives us all hope. And Andy is the ultimate in showing how perseverance pays off

Shame he couldn't do what Sinner did today - break Isner's serve

Isner didn't serve as well today as he did against Andy. That was the first time that Isner has ever beaten Andy, so he can usually mange his serve very well.

I know Sinner has top 10 ranking but can't help feeling slightly miffed - no, make that 100% miffed - at the scoreline of his match with Isner today. No justice. x

Indeed - often Andy’s been beaten by the winner or someone who goes really deep.
Looks like Isner just had a purple patch.
Shame

Yes disappointing that Isner only really had a top notch level against Andy, though Murray possibly could have done a bit better in some key moments. Sinner had not won a match on grass before this tournament but has got going.

RosieBear
02-07-2022, 06:04
I share the frustration. But it happens, especially on the grass. What should be a decent draw turns into a nightmare because a player finds the form of their life for a match. Rosol, Brown and Muller did it to Rafa. Stakovsky to Fed. Particularly frustrating it happened to Andy when the field is so diminished but it doesn't mean anything long term. He's only getting better and better - a few weeks ago he couldn't put 2 wins together, the progress has been phenomenal. Andy has a lot of great tennis left, and I think bigger wins are only a matter of time.

I was also on CC for the match, and the one on Monday, so at least I saw him get a win. Great atmosphere for both! When Andy got that 4th set I think we all started to believe … but it was not to be sadly.
Absolutely gutted Andy lost but Isner was on fire! There was very little Andy could do. I’m with Jonny Mac, I’ve never seen Isner play that well! Personally, don’t like him and I find his game so boring to watch. Couldn’t bare to stay for the on court interview although I’ve heard he said lovely things about Andy so fair play to him for that.
Feel like this Wimbledon was his chance to do big things … there are not many who play as well on grass as Andy. Not as confident the USO will be as fruitful as Wimbledon might have been but who knows?! Go Andy! #AlwaysBelieve
