View Full Version : MONTREAL 2022 - R1 Andy vs Taylor Fritz Tues not before 11.30 pm
Sad that Andy has got yet another rotten 1st round draw, he really needs the points. x

Oh boy - this is grim!
Sadly Andy’s best shot at increasing his points to get seeded for the US Open was in these earlier tournaments and he didn’t take those opportunities for whatever reason. This is really going to make him mad - hopefully mad enough to beat Fritz!
Fritz was in a bad way physically when he had to withdraw from his match in Washington with heat exhaustion, but he says he has recovered. He has also said he has been nursing a foot injury since Wimbledon.

Eek that is late. Have they had bad weather delaying things?
Andy's match has been postponed until tomorrow.
Andy playing not before 11.30 pm.
Note that this is the fifth match on court (play starting at 4.00 pm, with one match near the end of the second set).
The weather forecast for Montreal doesn't look too promising, so perhaps more rain delays.
So is it another late night in the hope that Andy's match will get underway at some
point ??

Players on court warming up now.
Just woken up, good timing, Andy's match just underway! x
(Gulp) Andy already 0-4 down! Only watching on fs; is he AWOL?
1st set gone all too quickly. x
Holding his own in the 2nd; needs a break. x
Sadly all over. Fritz played well, so much for his bad foot. Something not quite working for Andy there. Anywhere else prior to the Open? Back to bed I guess with a heavy heart. x
Why do Andy's opponents always turn on their very best tennis when playing him??! The answer is because they hold Andy in such high regard, and feel they have to turn it on to have a chance. And didn't Taylor turn it on tonight! Having seen Taylor at Wimbledon, I feared Andy would have his work cut out today. So on we go to the next tournie. Hard luck Andy, well played Taylor, who said it was an honour to play Andy. That's a positive to take away from this match.

Fritz certainly was on song but disappointing that Andy could not make it closer, not getting enough matches sadly. Hopefully makes more progress in upcoming events.

Fritz far too good last night. Hate watching Andy in matches like this but hopefully better times ahead.
1 - 6, 3 - 6! did anyone see the game? at this rate Andy won't be seeded for US Open.

I watched it. Fritz was dominant in first set with amazing placement of shots beating Andy time and again. Andy rallied somewhat in second but double faults didn't help. Fritz was much the better player and Andy looked tired and dispirited at times though fighting spirit still apparent. He was furious with himself.
Have been away for a fortnight, so missed Washington and Montreal. Sorry to see he has lost. The Golden Generation is fading now.
Hard for him.

Wasn't able to watch but sad this was another early loss. Any sign of Lendl? Seems like Andy needs that Lendl magic at the moment

I think Andy is torn between wanting to recapture his old form and success and struggling to get his body and mind to come on board with him!
Hes had to sacrifice so much before to succeed - part of him may be thinking - does he really want to do that this time? Can his body hold up? Can he dedicate all the time this takes with a young family who he’s missing out on? I would have thought there’s all sorts of conflicting stuff going on in his mind and this translates on the court to losses he shouldn’t lose. He’s someone who people respect for what he’s trying to do but who now know they can beat.
The game has changed since he’s been out and Andy’s serve is still an issue and it doesn’t seem like Lendl has brought the X factor as yet sadly

Eugh well that was not good. Andy really needs his serve to be there for him, it was just an uphill struggle after that 2nd game. He seemed to be hitting towards Fritz constantly and not making him run but then I don't know what was going on in his head, or what his plan was.
Have to hope for better things to come and will always believe it with Andy, not writing him off yet!

I just watched the highlights and felt a bit sad as there was quite a difference in the tennis each showed. Andy has earned the right to play for as long as he wishes to but I do not feel he is able to hurt top players as much as he used to, for whatever reason.

I agree with this. I'd hate to see him reduced to a sideshow, winning the odd match here and there but refusing to give up 'the life'. Better to go out with the enormous respect he enjoys currently still intact.
