C'mon Andy! Getting a bit old to stay up this late! (me not Andy!) ;)
Play about to start with the roof closed, not because it's raining, but because of the heat, with play currently suspended on the outside courts for that reason. Dan leads 6-4 4-6 6-4.
Andy breaks in game 2, Berretini slow to get the forehand going. Long may it continue!
Game and first set Murray, 6-3!

Yes, got an initial break and managed to hold on. He served at least one ace in each of his service games. C'mon Andy!
Andy breaks in the first game of the second set!
Andy breaks again in game 9 to take the second set 6-3!

Gets the second set breaking for the second time so will serve first in the third set! C'mon Andy!
Andy broken in game 5 of set 3, after missing out on break points in the previous game.
2 sets to 1. Come on Andy!

Yes come on Andy. Hold serve and then hope he is a bit lax about his first service game of the set.
Apart from the 2005 defeat to Nalbandian, Andy has won the other 157 matches where he won the first two sets. C'mon Andy!
Business end of the fourth set, Andy leads 5-4*.
And now 6-5*, can afford to go for it here, a fifth set is not wanted!
Berretini with the mini break, *3-2.
Straight back on serve, 3-3 at the change of ends.
Berretini with the mini breakagain,*5-4.
6-6*. Can Andy bring up a match point?
No... *7-6 as Berretini pulls off a wonder shot...
Andy had a chance there, but it's 8-7*.

Glad Andy is serving second even if there is the stress later on of holding, because then he can give all to hold and save energy for the next one unless an opportunity comes along to break. C'mon Andy!
Berretini serves first and is serving bombs at the moment.
Drat the man! So want this for Andy, he deserves it. x

Morning!
Business end of the decider, 5-4* Berretini.
5-5! Should have been over, can Andy get a lift from that let off?
So, a match tie break to decide it, felt inevitable for a while.
Andy with 2 mini breaks is 4-0 up!
Make that 3 mini breaks and 5-0!
Forehand error with the court wide open. *8-6...
Net cord and Andy has done it!
:yahoo:
What a man! 5 sets, 2 tie-breaks, couldn't be happier for him! x

He did it!
That is his 50th win at the AO, becoming only the fifth person in the open era to get to 50 or more.
His first top 20 victory at a Grand Slam since 2017.
And his record when winning the first two sets in a five setter is 158 won and 1 lost (that very first against Nalbandian in 2005).
Never stop believing. I watched every single point of that - don't know how I will do my work today - what a special feeling still after all these years.
Well done Andy!

Typical bloke. Wins a fantastic tennis match and celebrates by sorting out the recycling.
in case any-one wonders what the hell I'm talking about, at the end of the match Andy had accumulated a fair number of empty water bottles so he scooped them up and wandered round asking where the bin was. To be fair, Matteo did the same but he couldn't find the bin so just left his by his seat.

Brilliant! Glad he won.
Well done to Mr M.Followed the last few points. Being a perennial pessimist I thought it would go pear shaped.

Loved that! Wow - buzzing!
A very emotional Andy afterwards!
Do not doubt how much this means to him and how much he wants to keep winning!
I heard David Law on radio Five Live, earlier, say how Andy likes to put us through the ringer. He also remembered Andy's press conference at the Australian Open in 2017, where everyone hoped that it wouldn't be his last year. Unfortunately, I had to go out just as Andy and Matteo were starting the fifth set tie break and wished for Andy to win it. I found out he'd won it, when I returned. Fantastic.
Well done Andy

Such a gutsy win. Couldn’t be happier for him - proving to himself and any doubters that, yes, he can still win big 5 set matches.. An incredible effort.
Unfortunately, it looks like Andy's opponent will be decided tonight, as Kokkinakis and Fognini are playing in the John Cain Arena, with the Aussie a break up in the first set. I'd hope they were going to fight out a tough 5 setter tomorrow.

Certainly was an amazing win for Andy, thought the tide had likely turned against him. However feel the length of the match could well take its toll later on, Kokkinakis is dominating thus far up 6-1,6-2,3-2 (with a break).

Well Andy certainly came to play, didn't he?! Incredible effort. Berretini has been a real bete noir, but when I heard the draw I wasn't that fed up. The positive vibes from Andy and the win over De Minauar gave hope, but more than anything if you have to face Berretini in a tournament make it in the first round before the monster serve and forehand have really found their groove. Andy played an absolute blinder to catch him cold and give himself enough of an early foothold to make it through. Days like this are just wonderful and make me think that I'll never be able to do this remarkable player and man justice when I try to explain him to my little nephew in the future. Enjoy it dear tennis friends, and here's to the next round. You never know with Renaissance Man, that elusive Aus trophy might be his yet. Stranger things....
Oh my! Andy sure did make a statement, didn't he! I have just finished watching the replay (even though I knew the result), and do you know what, I'm glad I did know! Watching that live must have been HARD. Such a contrast to his round 1 match against RBA in 2019. Such dejection then, such elation now. He's a guy who just keeps on giving. He deserves every good thing that comes his way. So so happy right now.

Absolutely buzzing! I hid from the score and had no idea of the result! What a match and those first two sets from Andy, I loved the comment, yes but Matteo hasn’t played this Andy Murray!
I know Andy was a bit limply walking off afterwards but he looked really good right to the end of the match!
What a guy #alwaysbelieve

So pleased for Andy, what a match and great result, really hope that this gives him the encouragement that he can compete with the top players, fingers crossed that he can recover well and get a few more wins at AO

Fantastic effort by Andy. Ivan has had a good influence on him again. I just hope he hasn't overdone it.

Not sure rush hour traffic and Andy in a 5th set on the radio was best driving mode but we all made it (we = me + Andy lol) in once piece. I swear he dropped a serve point late in the tiebreak to ensure he literally won match point as I finished parking. Oh I've missed these travel traumas (I think). Just awesome. And great play, not a scrappy match. What a heart! Fabulous!
How amazing was that. It was torturous watching it, edge of the chair, screaming stuff. I was so scared for Andy but still believed he could do it. Im still not sure how his body keeps going, metal hip and all. Nearly 5 hours........ So, so proud of him and happy for him and all of us.
Lots of links of the match now up on the newspaper thread including an apology from Mats Wilander.

Lots of links of the match now up on the newspaper thread including an apology from Mats Wilander.
What was he apologising for? This time?
For underestimating Andy!!
What was he apologising for? This time?
For saying he should not have taken wild cards to tournaments when he came back from injury a while back.
What was he apologising for? This time?
This was the quote on Eurosport
Speaking after the match, Wilander admitted he wrote Murray off too soon, saying, “A couple of years ago Andy, you played at the French Open and I was questioning you taking a wildcard. You went out and played against Stan Wawrinka on the Philippe-Chatrier, you didn’t look motivated and I thought maybe you shouldn’t have taken that wildcard.
“You then later told me that you were going to take every wildcard because ‘I am wanting to get back’. Today, you’ve proved me wrong in a way because to see you fight like that, to see your problem-solving skills and to get rewarded for all the hard work makes it all worthwhile to stay in this job”, he said.
Looking ahead to the rest of Murray’s tournament, Wilander said, “We’ve missed you playing at the top of your game and you’re back in every way, so well done and I can’t wait to see your projection into the tournament now you've beaten one of the best players in the world.”
