View Full Version : Australian Open 2023 R2 : Andy vs Kokkinakis - Thur time 9.30 am approx
Andy vs Kokkinakis Thursday - match thread
Playing 2nd night match on Margaret Court arena after a WTA match. 1st night match starts at 8.00 am UK time, so Andy will probably be on around 9.30 - 10 am.
Kokkinakis appears to have had an easy match :grrr:
Match before Andy's is yet to start so it'll be at least 10.30 before he gets going.
Going to be a late one in Melbourne, players about.to.come on to the MCA.
Kokkinakis breaks Andy's serve to make it 2 - 3. I hope that the ball person didn't hear Andy's swearing and I won't be repeating what he said.

Andy broken in the first set. Mmm... he seems to be adopting his strategy of being more passive than aggressive, letting his opponent come on to him and in some ways it has played Kokkinakis into the match. Hope he can break back. I think he will need to do this in straights. C'mon Andy!
Andy should have broken in Kokkinakis' first service game, but he looks off today.
There's a long way to go yet!

Not the best start and Kokkinakis fired up, hopefully Andy stronger in 2nd though!
Just started watching. I hope Kokkinakis runs out of steam soon.
Andy is broken in game 9 of the second set and then Kokkinakis fails to serve it out! Andy looks better in this set right until he was broken to love...
Wow ..... I didn't see that coming. Hang on in there, Andy!!

Kokkinakis tightened up but Andy certainly finding some inspiration, guaranteed at least a Breaker now-come on!
Tie break it is. Need this.
Not the best start, *0-3...
*2-6. Looooooong way back from here.
Have to hope Andy continues to improve, hasn't made any real inroads into the Kokkinakis serve so far.

Andy gave too much away there and Kokkinakis takes TB 7-4, long road back now!
Just hoping Kokkinakis will tire or dip a bit soon.
Andy broken to love again.
3 points to break straight back.
All saved. Andy 1 from 8 on break points.
After an Aussie meltdown, a fourth break point...

Andy had no right to win that point!
Andy breaks back ...... brilliant!!
Did you ever, or will you ever, see a point like that to break serve. That was out of this world. Even if Andy goes on to lose this match, that point alone was worth it! Stunning!
Need to get ahead whilst Kokkinakis is still rattled.
Ach, should have had a break point but it's Kokkinakis' turn to retrieve overheads.
Andy hands the Auusie 2 break points.
Awful game from Andy there, and his chances to get back in this may have gone.

Kokkinakis deserves to lose this match due to those shorts and that hair alone. When did the 1980s boy band look make a comeback ?
Back on serve as Kokkinakis fails to serve it out again... Andy serving to stay in the match at 5-4*.
Oh Andy, what an awful volley. Time to serve to stay in the match again.
Last chance saloon, 3rd set tie break.
3-3 at the change of ends. Andy has been a mini break up twice.
Kokkinakis' serve keeping him in this.

145am. This is ridiculous, they could be playing until 4am and that's with MTB in 5th set.
Big forehand error and Andy leads *5-4.
Set point on the Kokkinakis serve.

on we go. They'll be serving breakfast soon...
He's not finished yet! I am only following on FS so how does Andy seem? No visible after effects of the 1st round match? I hate these long matches for his body! x
It took him a set to warm up...Andy looks the fitter man now.
I wonder if the ball is getting slower the more into the night they go - wouldn't that help Andy? I notice some people are wearing jackets so it must have cooled.
Marathon first game, Andy has saved 2 break points so far...
Another break point for Andy comes and goes, saved with an ace.

Definitely a dip from the Australian but Andy showing some fine form, hopefully can break here though!
Both struggling on serve now, Kokkinakis holds after saving two break points, and now Andy saves one.
And now he'll have to save a second...
Saved with a serve and volley!
An exchange of holds, partly thanks to a very British net. Has Kokkinakis gone over his ankle?
This is mad! I had to go out when Andy was a break down in the 3rd and assumed it would all be over when I returned!
Never write off Sir Andy :knight:
Another break point comes and goes, but here's one more...
Andy has come back from 2 sets to love down in 5 set matches 10 times in his career, according to the commies. Lets hope Andy makes it 11.
Andy consolidates for 5-2*.
Best to break here? Serve first in the decider?
Kokkinakis holds. Andy's nerve to be tested this time,.serving for.the fourth set.

5th set here we go!!!
:coaster:
Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's only 3 am in the morning. It has taken 4 hours 38 minutes for the first 4 sets. Wonder how long the final one will last.
Amazing ...... absolutely AMAZING!!
Score is now 4-6 6-7 7-6 6-3. Andy has done better and better each set in turn. 2 games down, then 1 game down, then 1 game up then 3 games up.

Fabulous from Andy and right now looking the stronger, never know though with Kokkinakis.

This is unreal, come on Andy!
Kokkinakis has now served 30 aces with 70% first serves in.
First easy hold for ages for either player.
2-1* Kokkinakis.
Sallydaisy
19-01-2023, 16:17
Andy could do with breaking serve when the Aussie serves next
.
For the moment I just want Andy to keep holding serve. Kokkinakis looking more energised now.
Andy gets to 0-30 in game 7. Come on!
Double fault! 3 break points! Come on Andy!

This is completely insane in so many ways!!!!!!!
Saved with a huge service winner.
Pity - Andy deserved that, on we go.
A love hold for Andy. Just what the doctor ordered.
Are we heading for another tie break?
Kokkinakis keeps banging down the aces. Andy to serve to stay in the match again.
Are we heading for another tie break?
I'd take that right now.
First net cord to go against Andy.
2 more break points! Surely this time...
1 saved...
Andy 4 of 19 on break points.
Make that 4 of 20...
Deuce.

Yesss!! please hold now Andy.
Actually 2 chances at it including the MTB.
15-0, 15 all. Andy misses an easy forehand.
30-15.
5 hr 45 minutes and 4.06 am .

What a match!! Hope Andy's next match is scheduled the latest it can possibly be so he gets some rest.
Magnificent !! - he is the very best (but don't know how he does it!) xx
Just watched match point. This match started when I came out of the vet this morning at about 11:30. Staggering.

What a match nearly six hours but a great victory. I hope he still has something left in the tank and gets a good recovery. Ivan will look after him!!
Unbelievable!!!! He is a god! :knight:

Magnificent Murray!!!!!
:boomerang::worship::sirandy:
This was Andy's longest match at 5 hr 45 min. His previous longest if I heard right was 5 hr 7 minutes. The record for the Australian Open is 5 hr 53 min in final between Nole and Rafa.
:yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo: I have no words!!

Incredible match and such a gutsy display from Andy to find a way in the end, an amazing fightback-well done!:cheer::cheer::cheer: kokkinakis could not believe it but did not quite find enough in the crucial moments to counter Murray. Certainly played in his part in a great encounter though. Wonder just how much Andy will have left in the tank though.

Who would have thought that tonight/this morning/this afternoon (take your pick!) Andy would successfully play the longest match of his career.
Otherwise, speechless.
I think we knew what we were doing when we decided to follow this guy all those years ago! :)
There really are no words .... what a fighter!!

Simply unbelievable, even to those of us well aware of his warrior qualities. What can I say that does this man justice? Nothing, so won't even try. I'll just say I love you forever Andy, and that I'll never stop being grateful that my life and his career coincided in time.
As I said before, Andy just keeps on giving. That match was everything, every superlative you can possibly think of. I really can't find the words to express myself. And to give such a good and amusing interview afterwards was beyond good. What a day!

Incredible, I do hope they give me the first night match on Saturday!
The interview was pure Andy ..... priceless!

Andy is definitely a one-off and supporting him over the years has been a real roller-coaster but so well worth it! Who will he play next? couldn't cope with another 5 setter this week, that's for sure. x

Not sure Andy quite meant the comment in the way the interviewer took it. :rolling:

Batista Agut..... what a draw! Meanwhile Djokovic is playing "who?" in daytime matches. Clearly tv and money drive the schedule but don't they realise this is a serious sports comp? So everyone should have a fair chance. How can it be fair to play less than 48 hours later against someone more rested? The weather in sport is a lottery and there's not much to be done about how long a match lasts but the schedule......:grrr:

Oh, I think he may well have done!!

We really do have to savour these moments. Not just Andy fans, but tennis fans in general. With Roger retired and Rafa's future uncertain, the order is slowly changing. Andy still gives us so much in his commitment to the game.
I always enjoy Andy's interviews as he always has a sense of humour, even after 4am.
Whilst over the moon at these 2 wins, I was truly hoping for an easier 3rd round match than RBA, for his sake more than ours! The scheduling leaves a lot to be desired. I marvel at his achievements, and wish him a speedy recovery. Let's go, Andy! x
Andy has also set the record for the most come backs from 2 sets down - now 11.

Absolutely David! I have said this a lot!
Rushed in from work, hid from the score, thinking it might be almost over. Watched half, Eurosport had stopped recording so I missed a set and was then still watching when hubby came in and found something to eat from the fridge.
I realised about half an hour ago that I hadn't eaten anything!
What an amazing match and time we're having so far. Why do we ever rule Andy out? And who would have wanted that match to be best of 3 sets?
The commies really made the most of Andy moaning about the time earlier, which wasn't about the 3 or 5 sets at all. They were saying this was proof that it should be changed to 3 sets. I wouldn't have missed those 5 for the world!

I wouldn't have wanted to miss the 5 sets either. They could have at least let Andy have a second toilet break. And they could at least stop the matches after a certain time and continue the next day.

Still speechless. Match had started on my morning break, was somewhat surprised it was still going mid afternoon lessons (sneaky phone peeks), very surprised it was still going when pupils left, amazed at the end of a meeting. 'Enjoyed' the final set via 5live on my work lap top. Absolving myself of any responsibility for incomprehensible feedback in the jotters I was marking. What. A. man! Reminding us so much of all we have enjoyed over the years.

Andy’s epic battle is front page of the Times today and there’s a two section cover of it in the Sports section!
How amazing was this. Its unbelievable, hang on a minute......Of course it's not......this is Andy we're talking about. I just never expected to see not one but 2, 5 set matches back to back. The cherry on the cake being Andy won them both and he's back. I don't know how long he can keep this up but I'm making the most of it.
I'm not sure why but my mind went back to when this forum was in the early stages and Andy used to come on, usually in the middle of the night if memory serves me right. Although me being in the States might have something to do with that, and he would chat with us. So down to earth and normal..... Who else remembers those chats????

I have had so many technical hitches with recent tennis (including the BBC with the Davis Cup when sound went off twice), I had actually forgotten. Hopefully they will get around to everyone because I hadn't asked for a refund. I'll keep any updates posted here.
