And the question everyone wants the answer to is will Andy play or not?

Well done to Fran Jones who beat Coco Vandeweghe 6 - 3, 6 - 3 in her first qualifying round yesterday.

Set 2 Dan was up a break got foot faulted dropped serve so back on serve now. Dan warned for unsportsmanlike conduct - broke a bottle maybe?
Bad luck for Dan. Dan has lost in 3 sets. A difficult first round match.

Gael Monfils just won an entertaining late night cracker in 5 sets.
Yes looked a bit dicey after losing 4th 6-1 and going down 4-1 in 5th, great fightback to take it 7-5!

How many times have we seen Gael take a lead, look worn out, stage a comeback but ultimately lose out. Well, cos it was in Paris, he managed to win. Hope he recovers in timecfor R2 v Rune
Cameron and Pouille have started. Cam leading 2-0 in first set.

Ahh, this is sorry news.
Gäel Monfils just announced he was withdrawing from the tournament because of a wrist problem. Will not play vs Rune after that deep-in-the-night triump over Baez
Oh dear, poor Gael. That will mess up their scheduling.
oop for Thursday - https://www.atptour.com/en/scores/current/roland-garros/520/daily-schedule?day=11
Sheesh..... does it annoy anyone else when tv news coverage says Cam is the only Brit left in the tournament :grrr:

Monflis withdrawing confused me and thought I was going mad with OOP. I remember seeing night match meant be Rune vs Monflis and thought that going be great, good time for me watch it at home.
Then next time I look at OOP Rune vs Monflis is done and now it Zverev night match instead and I was like huh?? Am I going mad thinking it was Rune there before. Didn't realise that Monflis withdraw and Rune get walkover.

Quite a battle between Rune and Cerundolo, Holger eventually takes it 10-7 in the 5th set breaker. Not always playing their best at the same time but got the drama. Francisco though may well rue not taking advantage of 0-40 at 4-3 but Rune had the fighting spirit, complained of dizziness earlier. Quarters now with Ruud who won in three tight sets over Jarry.
Today's oop - https://www.rolandgarros.com/en-us/order-of-play?year=2023&competition=all&annexeCourt=all&principalCourt=all&favoriteFilter=false&country=all&date=2023-06-06

Rune eaten by Ruud in the quarters. Ruud seems like a nice guy but I find Rune’s style much more exciting to watch so I was cheering for him. Onwards to the grass Holger :grass2:

Thought Rune had a reasonable shot but Ruud completely dominated the first half of the match though Holger took it to 4. Maybe previous match took its toll. Ruud faces Zverev, the German had tough battle with Etcheverry in another 4 setter. Sacha again reaching the last 4 after that serious ankle injury in 2022. of course the semi with top billing will be Alcaraz v Djokovic.
JAMES4578

Was becoming a gripping contest but the cramping effectively ended Alcaraz's hopes ,what a pity! Djokovic had the better start but Carlos won a long 2nd set 7-5 before the problem early in the 3rd. Novak now up 5-0 in 4th and Alcaraz not won a game since the issue. Carlos got on the board but Djokovic into the final 6-3,5-7,6-1,6-1.
Final will be Ruud v. Djokovic.
Final will be Ruud v. Djokovic.
At 1.30 pm
Not sure I will even bother watching tbh. Had really hoped Carlos could take Djoko out in the semi but was not to be … and I really can’t see Ruud troubling him I’m afraid … hope I’m wrong.
I’ll 100% be watching Andy and then we’ll see after that …

I will be watching (with an eye on the challenger too) but think unlikely Ruud can put Djokovic under real pressure) has not taken a set in 4 previous matches (2021-22) but this is first slam meeting.
People still in denial about Djokovic being the GOAT?
JAMES4578

As expected Djokovic took the title 7-6(7-1),6-3,7-5 for his 23rd slam, obviously has strong credentials and Nadal has a bigger proportion of his titles on one surface. Would not be the fan favourite mind you. Ruud pressed him in the 1st set which lasted 90 minutes but really should have taken advantage of a bit of an uncertain start from the serb (missed a few overheads) but was unable to hold on the early break in the end. Meanwhile Novak soon found another level.
People still in denial about Djokovic being the GOAT?
Sadly not no … can’t get away from the fact he now has more grand slams than any other male player ever, and I’m sure he’s not done yet. He is an amazing big match player, and seems to just get better at it. I would not be at all surprised if he got the calendar GS this year either. BUT …. he still doesn’t have an Olympic gold ;)

He must be odds on favourite for Wimbledon but the US Open will be a tad more difficult
