A first round match Andy should win, would have preferred it not to be against Ryan mind you. Potentially a tough 2nd round though Tsitsipas has been in poor form on the grass and Thiem not really the same force nowadays.

Not a bad day for the Brits; not sure today will be as fruitful. Watching on tv yesterday I was reminded of my work days when I used to take the 2nd week off as holidays and as yesterday would be glued to the box each day. Will I be watching quite as avidly next week? - depends on who's still there! Been to Wimbledon only once with a ground ticket in 1995; always hoped to do the other slams but left it too late now at 82 and with poor mobility. Loved my Davis Cup excursions but still feel the same thrill watching Wimbledon as I did as an 11 year old. Andy is very special so come on Andy and make this year extra special! x

I should think they also need to see how many matches are completed today as some players are still playing the first round, and some have not even started their first round match, so I am guessing the oop will be late.

Do we think Wimbledon are going to look at their scheduling for Centre Court in future years? Here are my issues and it's not just because the late start possibly impacted on the result of Andy's match....

The 1.30pm start has been problematic since they started doing it last year. Matches go so long it's often a struggle to finish before the 11pm curfew. They need to start earlier on Centre, probably at Noon but at least make it 1pm like it used to be. Why have they changed it? For the TV companies? To suit hospitality ticket-holders? To stagger the start times with No.1 & outside courts?

The on-court interviews are also eating into the time and for me add very little value to the viewing experience either on TV or at the venue. Pretty much every interview is the same ...'My opponent played great, I'm happy how I'm playing, I'm delighted to be in the next round'. Totally pointless doing that on court & holds up the next match. If they must interview the winning payer, do it in the clubhouse like they used to, but really I find those interviews pointless except for when it's the Finals. Players do a presser anyway if they have anything of interest to say.

As I type Swiatek is probably about to win in 2 sets, leaving Djoko & Stan less than 3 hours to get on court and finish before the curfew. If Iga's match goes to a 3rd set, no chance of the men's match finishing

lovetennis
07-07-2023, 19:24
And Iga's on court interview does nothing to dispel my view on the pointlessness of those interviews. No disrespect to her, what else do they expect her to say?

Jan

The 13.30 start on centre court is definitely too late I agree. Even with the roof, they struggle to finish and at least 2 days come to mind where they have had matches to finish as well as the 3 scheduled matches! And it just keeps happening.
Will they change it? Let’s hope so. I believe it was moved to 13.30 so that CC and court 1 were different times … ok then, make court 1 12.30 and CC 13.00!

The men's final as pretty much expected, Djokovic v Alcaraz. However semis a bit disappointing with both going through in straight sets. Sinner could not take advantage of any of the 6 break points and Medvedev challenge pretty much faded in the middle of the 1st. A bit of a lapse from Carlos in the 3rd though as he lost serve twice but Daniil could not capitalise.

Alcaraz is certainly a phenomenal talent and has taken to grass court play remarkably quickly; with his win, it does seem more like the changing of the guard than with others who have risen in the top group and then couldn't maintain their position. I did feel sorry for Djokovic, as in spite of his sometimes annoying behaviour, he did play well against an opponent 16 years younger in a long 5 set match. I hope we continue to see more of him, Nadal, and of course Andy. (Sorry, personally I wasn't sorry to see the back of Fed!). x

I thought it was interesting how often Carlos used the drop shot tactic, which I think had four benefits. firstly, winning the point out right, secondly to set up an easier passing shot, thirdly to keep Novak on his toes and finally, to tire Novak by chasing the drop shots. Going side to side is tiring but players will train for this, whereas the explosive start needed to go after a drop shot will undoubtedly affect stamina. Carlos must played more dropshots than AM in his prime !

So glad Carlos won!

Just reading Wimbledon numbers page (they do it every year). What making me laugh is about Eubanks. He hit most aces in mens 102, he also hit most unforced error 218 and he ALSO hit most winners 321 in mens side. So almost covers it all.

No, and why would he walk away? He took a top 5 player to 5 sets and very nearly won! If he had only challenged that return of serve at 15-30 at 4-4 in the 4th set, who knows what conversation we would all be having now. I was on in the crowd that day and didn’t find out about this until way after.

No, and why would he walk away? He took a top 5 player to 5 sets and very nearly won! If he had only challenged that return of serve at 15-30 at 4-4 in the 4th set, who knows what conversation we would all be having now. I was on in the crowd that day and didn’t find out about this until way after.

Also if only they had started Centre Court matches at a sensible time. Even if it had started at 1.00 pm there would have been time to play the fourth set while Andy had the momentum (but also sore from that fall).
