Harriet Dart comes from 2 breaks down to take the first set on the tie break. Hope she finishes this off, I think she may be the only British woman to make the second round given those tough ties.

So Harriet out; hope Hawkeye isn't right in thinking she may be the only British woman to go through to the 2nd round!

Not a great performance from Harriet unfortunately, fight back in 1st proved to be a false dawn.

good win for Kenin over Gauff. Coco seemed at a bit of a loss how to counteract Kenin's power game, and in the end it was a case who could hit the hardest for the longest.

Certainly good win for Kenin though wanted Gauff to win. It was a tough draw but still a tough loss for Coco.

I was wanting Coco to win too. Tough first round match, but that is how it goes.

Katie through, Heather and Jodie out.

Good win for for katie in a match with a few interruptions, unfortunately Jodie started tentatively and could not much of an impact on Kasaktina. Heather was competitive in the 2nd with Krejcikova but just failed to take it to a breaker.

Katie thumped by Rybakina, and so no Britons make the second week in the singles after a promising start to the week.

Excellent match between Azarenka and Svitolina last night. I really like them both and Azarenka handled the no hand shake very well, understanding that it wouldn’t happen. So to be booed off court by an ignorant proportion of the crowd was unforgivable. Idiots!

Vika certainly didn't hold back afterwards, "I thought it was a great match. If people are going to be focusing only on handshakes or crowd, quite drunk crowd, booing in the end, that's a shame," she added."
It's certainly a difficult one and without wanting to get too political, I find the no handshake thing rather petty. Unless a Russian or BeloRussian has actually come out and said they positively support the action of their country, it's difficult for the individuals to criticise the actions of their leaders, especially as the may not enjoy the same freedoms of speech as we do in the West. As Vika says, they are only tennis players so by shaking hands at the end of their 'work job' with a rival, it's sending a positive message to their respective leaders, and the world.

I have no problem with the lack of a handshake. Elina held her racket up to acknowledge Vika, so plainly its not personal. I absolutely agree that the lack of awareness of the situation by the crowd isn't helping though.

The Wimbledon 2023 Ladies Quarter-Finalists

[1] Swiatek v WC Svitolina
[4] Pegula v Vondrousova
[3] Rybakina v [6] Jabeur
[2] Sabalenka v [25] Keys

A few upsets with Swiatek,Rybakina and Pegula now all out. A great performance from ons Jabeur in ousting the defending champion 6-7,6-4,6-1 . Tight for a while but Jabeur controlled the 3rd and Elena could not respond, the Tunisian in a more aggressive mode. I did not really think Iga would win the title but a strong performance from Svitolina who took it 6-2 in the 3rd.

The final will be between Jabeur and Vondrusova, whilst cannot take it for granted Ons clear favourite for this one . Another strong performance from Jabeur who came from a set and 4-2 down to beat Sabalenka 6-7,6-4,6-3. Laterally was absorbing the power really well as well coming up with some flair but was aggressive when the opportunity arose.
unfortunately Svitolina was flat though made the 2nd a bit more credible (coming back from 0-4) in a 6-3,6-3 loss though Vondrusova was tricky.

Did I hear that ONS has lost twice to Vondrusova already this year? That might make it interesting!

yes, Vondrusova won the 2 matches this year, 3 all overall. Think grass should be to Ons' advantage though there is the pressure of expectation.

I didn’t realise that - was thinking she was the clear favourite

Vondrousova wins the Ladies Title at Wimbledon 2023, 6'4, 6'4.
First unseeded player to ever do so!
:trophy:

Sad for Ons Jabeur who is runner up for the 2nd year running, but her nerves really got the better of her today.

Hoped for more but credit to Vondrousova who is a tricky opponent and stepped up in the crucial stages of both sets, a great win for Marketa (particularly given her injury problems in recent years). However felt it was more one than Ons let slip and was just too tight, in the early stages was the more confident player but could not really make it count. Still certainly had a few big wins which will hopefully be a positive moving forward.

Took part in Judy Murray’s Twitter prediction competition for the ladies final. She asked people to predict the winner, score and match time with a copy of her book ‘The Wild Card’ as a prize. In the end she gave 2 prizes - I have received a signed copy for my prediction of Vondrousova, 64 75, 84 mins. The other winner predicted Vondrousova, 64 64, 92 mins. I was lucky to be sent a book as the other winner had 2 correct predictions - the actual time was 80 mins. Thank you Judy. Only 10 out of 200 chose Vondrousova.
Anyone read her book yet?
